The work’s objective was to evaluate, in field conditions, four forest species behavior submitted to different organic manurings and minerals with the addition of a conditioning of soil (Hidroplan). The adopted statistical outlining was in blocks, structured in portions subdivided with 30 treatments that consisted of combinations of factors (6 fertilizers x 5 times) with 5 repetitions, being used one plant by portion. Height (h) and diameter of the plants (d) were assessed. The data were submitted to the variance analysis and the average test (Newman-Keuls 5%). The seedlings were produced in a nursery, in inside polyethylene tubas and they ware planted in field 90 days after the rustic. The manurings tested in the experiment were: bovine manure; chicken manure; mineral manuring NPK (testifies); bovine manure + Hidroplan; chicken manure + Hidroplan and mineral manuring NPK + Hidroplan. The studied organic fertilizers contributed to a better acting in every species, except for the Eucalyptus urophylla, which had a better acting in NPK and NPK + Hidroplan.O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar em condições de campo o comportamento de quatro espécies florestais submetidas a diferentes adubações orgânicas e minerais com adição de um condicionador de solo (Hidroplan).

MODELOS DE AFILAMENTO PARA Pinus taeda L. BASEADOS EM PONTOS DE MUDANÇA DE FORMA
This work was planned to describe the change point of stem taper (pmf), the number of geometric change points, adjust and compare mathematical models to predict diameters along of stem of Pinus taeda L. The data sampled were measured on trees growing in stands implanted with spacement of 2,50 x 2,50m, thinned at 9 and 14 years and final cut at 30 years old, from Klabin S.A., Telêmaco Borba, Paraná state, Brazil. Fourty trees between the average and dominant trees were cut and measured with Smalian method at the positions 0,10m; 0,30m; 0,80m; 1,30m; and from them at each 1m to the top. At crown part the measured point were moved among knot. After that, at each measured point, slices to stem analysis were cut. If considered the age, a group of 649 trees between 8 to 30 years old resulted of the analysis. From this group, 50 trees were selected at random of each pmf class to modeling. The trees were grouped in pmf by the number of change point of stem shape defined by the second derivative of the polynomial 5th. Degree 5th grad Polinon adjusted for each tree. The statistics of adjustment and precision, residuals graphics, bias (v), average difference (md), and difference of standard deviation (dpd) showed as better model the polynomial 5th. degree to predict the diameter at relative height of stem, and alternatively the Garay model and the Max-Burkhart with two segments or modify to one segment according to the number of pmf calculated by the derivative.

This work aimed to evaluate different taper models in the estimate of the merchantable height and volume and along the bole volumes of Eucalyptus sp., to the obtention of multiproducts. Considering the data of rigorous scaling of trees of Eucalyptus sp. with 16 years-old, it was appraised the models of taper of Demaerschalk (1972), Ormerod (1973), Schöepfer (1966), Hradetzky (1976), Garay (1979) and Biging (1984). Based on graphical analysis of the residues and on the statistics bias (B), average of the differences (MD) and deviation pattern of the differences (DPD), it could be verified that, in the estimate of the merchantable height and volume of the models, Biging, Schöepfer and Hradetzky presented the best results, followed by the models of Garay, which have also shown good results. In general, considering the treatment of the volumes of the logs, the Biging model presented the best resuts.Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar diferentes modelos de afilamento na estimativa da altura comercial, volume comercial e volumes ao longo do fuste de Eucalyptus sp. para a obtenção de multiprodutos. http://dx.doi.org/10.5902/198050985085The objective of this paper was model the shape, compare the efficiency of the total volume estimated with the 5th grade polynomial, with and without data stratification by an artificial form quotient and build the assortment table. The data came from Pinus taeda L. stands, managed by a sawmill company, with two thinning and coppicing, plantation of 1.600 trees/ha and spacing of 2,50 x 2,50 m, from Klabin S.A., in Telêmaco Borba, Paraná state. The field data was stratified in three form quotient classes defined by the diameter of 70% total height and breast height diameter. The trunk classification in assortments was accurate and the volume obtained with the integrated equations presented small residues, without tendency.

http://dx.doi.org/10.5902/198050988453For maximum growth and yield of forest quality, scientific studies are needed on management techniques that will result in a higher economic return. A technique widely used in the production forest is thinning, it increases the individual growth of remaining trees. The aim of this study is to develop a system of curved guides to express the potential number of trees per hectare can maintain the forest as a function of dominant height, as an aid in determining the thinnings. The data were provided by the companies Cambará SA, Klabin SA, Forestry SA and United Petropar, where 187 samples were collected, being two dominant trees for unit, adding up to 374 dominant trees. In the selection equation, it was considered the statistical parameters of the adjusted coefficient of determination (R² adj), coefficient of variation (CV), F value and calculated value of chi-square (χ²) and analysis of waste. The equation selected was number 5, however, we observe that equations 5 and 6 are very similar for all the selection criteria used. Comparative analysis of regression equations developed independently for the three sampling regions showed significant differences between them. As there was no interaction between the variable "place" and the ‘hdom’ variable, a regression was calculated for Site 2 and one for Places 1 and 3 because these regressions differed significantly only on the intercept, with parallelism. The residue analysis showed that the equations developed for each site showed no tendency to over-or underestimation, therefore, the use of dominant height as the independent variable is efficient to describe the guidelines for thinning in Pinus taeda L. studied.http://dx.doi.org/10.5902/198050988453Para um máximo crescimento e produção florestal de qualidade, são necessários estudos científicos sobre técnicas de manejo que venham resultar em um maior retorno econômico.
Effects of Brazil's political crisis on the science needed for biodiversity conservation
The effects of Brazil’s political crisis on science funding necessary for biodiversity conservation are likely to be global. Brazil is not only the world’s most biodiverse nation, it is responsible for the greater part of the Amazon forest, which regulates the climate and provides rain to much of southern South America. Brazil was a world leader in satellite monitoring of land-use change, in-situ biodiversity monitoring, reduction in tropical-forest deforestation, protection of indigenous lands, and a model for other developing nations. Coordinated public responses will be necessary to prevent special-interest groups from using the political crisis to weaken science funding, environmental legislation and law enforcement.
