    Mass measurements towards doubly magic Ni-78 : Hydrodynamics versus nuclear mass contribution in core-collapse supernovae

    We report the first high-precision mass measurements of the neutron-rich nuclei Ni-74,Ni-75 and the clearly identified ground state of Cu-76, along with a more precise mass-excess value of Cu-78, performed with the double Penning trap JYFLTRAP at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line (IGISOL) facility. These new results lead to a quantitative estimation of the quenching for the N = 50 neutron shell gap. The impact of this shell quenching on core-collapse supernova dynamics is specifically tested using a dedicated statistical equilibrium approach that allows a variation of the mass model independent of the other microphysical inputs. We conclude that the impact of nuclear masses is strong when implemented using a fixed trajectory as in the previous studies, but the effect is substantially reduced when implemented self-consistently in the simulation.     High-precision mass measurements and production of neutron-deficient isotopes using heavy-ion beams at IGISOL

    An upgraded ion-guide system for the production of neutron-deficient isotopes with heavy-ion beams has been commissioned at the IGISOL facility with an Ar-36 beam on a Ni-nat target. It was used together with the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap to measure the masses of Zr-82, Nb-84, Mo-86, Tc-88, and Ru-89 ground states and the isomeric state Tc-88(m). Of these, Ru-89 and Tc-88(m) weremeasured for the first time. The precision of measurements of Zr-82, Nb-84, and Tc-88 was significantly improved. The literature value for Mo-86 was verified. The measured states in Tc-88 were compared to shell-model calculations and additional constraints on the spins and level scheme were obtained. The masses of Mo-82 and Ru-86 have been predicted using the measured masses of their mirror partners and theoretical mirror displacement energies, resulting in more tightly bound nuclei with smaller atomic mass uncertainties than reported in the literature.Peer reviewe

    Assessment of Platelet REACtivity After Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement : The REAC-TAVI Trial

    The REAC-TAVI (Assessment of platelet REACtivity after Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation) trial enrolled patients with aortic stenosis (AS) undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) pre-treated with aspirin + clopidogrel, aimed to compare the efficacy of clopidogrel and ticagrelor in suppressing high platelet reactivity (HPR) after TAVI. Current recommendations support short-term use of aspirin + clopidogrel for patients with severe AS undergoing TAVR despite the lack of compelling evidence. This was a prospective, randomized, multicenter investigation. Platelet reactivity was measured at 6 different time points with the VerifyNow assay (Accriva Diagnostics, San Diego, California). HPR was defined as (P2Y reaction units (PRU) ≄208. Patients with HPR before TAVR were randomized to either aspirin + ticagrelor or aspirin + clopidogrel for 3 months. Patients without HPR continued with aspirin + clopidogrel (registry cohort). The primary endpoint was non-HPR status (PRU <208) in ≄70% of patients treated with ticagrelor at 90 days post-TAVR. A total of 68 patients were included. Of these, 48 (71%) had HPR (PRU 273 ± 09) and were randomized to aspirin + ticagrelor (n = 24, PRU 277 ± 08) or continued with aspirin + clopidogrel (n = 24, PRU 269 ± 49). The remaining 20 patients (29%) without HPR (PRU 133 ± 12) were included in the registry. Overall, platelet reactivity across all the study time points after TAVR was lower in patients randomized to ticagrelor compared with those treated with clopidogrel, including those enrolled in the registry (p < 0.001). The primary endpoint was achieved in 100% of patients with ticagrelor compared with 21% with clopidogrel (p < 0.001). Interestingly, 33% of clopidogrel responder patients at baseline developed HPR status during the first month after TAVR. HPR to clopidogrel is present in a considerable number of patients with AS undergoing TAVR. Ticagrelor achieves a better and faster effect, providing sustained suppression of HPR to these patients.     Binding energies of ground and isomeric states in neutron-rich ruthenium isotopes: measurements at JYFLTRAP and comparison to theory

    We report on precision mass measurements of 113,115,117^{113,115,117}Ru performed with the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap mass spectrometer at the Accelerator Laboratory of University of Jyv\"askyl\"a. The phase-imaging ion-cyclotron-resonance technique was used to resolve the ground and isomeric states in 113,115^{113,115}Ru and enabled for the first time a measurement of the isomer excitation energies, Ex(113E_x(^{113}Rum)=100.5(8)^{m})=100.5(8) keV and Ex(115E_x(^{115}Rum)=129(5)^{m})=129(5) keV. The ground state of 117^{117}Ru was measured using the time-of-flight ion-cyclotron-resonance technique. The new mass-excess value for 117^{117}Ru is around 36 keV lower and 7 times more precise than the previous literature value. With the more precise ground-state mass values, the evolution of the two-neutron separation energies is further constrained and a similar trend as predicted by the BSkG1 model is obtained up to the neutron number N=71N=71.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Physical Review

    High-precision measurements of low-lying isomeric states in 120−124^{120-124}In with JYFLTRAP double Penning trap

    Neutron-rich 120−124^{120-124}In isotopes have been studied utilizing the double Penning trap mass spectrometer JYFLTRAP at the IGISOL facility. Using the phase-imaging ion-cyclotron-resonance technique, the isomeric states were resolved from ground states and their excitation energies measured with high precision in 121,123,124^{121,123,124}In. In 120,122^{120,122}In, the 1+1^+ states were separated and their masses were measured while the energy difference between the unresolved 5+5^+ and 8−8^- states, whose presence was confirmed by post-trap decay spectroscopy was determined to be ≀15\leq15 keV. In addition, the half-life of 122^{122}Cd, T1/2=5.98(10)T_{1/2} = 5.98(10) s, was extracted.     First investigation on the isomeric ratio in multinucleon transfer reactions: Entrance channel effects on the spin distribution

    The multinucleon transfer (MNT) reaction approach was successfully employed for the first time to measure the isomeric ratios (IRs) of 211^{211}Po (25/2+^+) isomer and its (9/2+^+) ground state at the IGISOL facility using a 945 MeV 136^{136}Xe beam impinged on 209^{209}Bi and nat^{\rm nat}Pb targets. The dominant production of isomers compared to the corresponding ground states was consistently revealed in the α\alpha-decay spectra. Deduced IR of 211^{211}Po populated through the 136^{136}Xe+nat^{\rm nat}Pb reaction was found to enhance ≈\approx1.8-times than observed for 136^{136}Xe+209^{209}Bi. State-of-the-art Langevin-type model calculations have been utilized to estimate the spin distribution of an MNT residue. The computations qualitatively corroborate with the considerable increase in IRs of 211^{211}Po produced from 136^{136}Xe+nat^{\rm nat}Pb compared to 136^{136}Xe+209^{209}Bi. Theoretical investigations indicate a weak influence of target spin on IRs. The enhancement of the 211^{211}Po isomer in the 136^{136}Xe+nat^{\rm nat}Pb over 136^{136}Xe+209^{209}Bi can be attributed to the different proton (pp)-transfer production routes. Estimations demonstrate an increment in the angular momentum transfer, favorable for isomer production, with increasing projectile energy. Comparative analysis indicates the two entrance channel parameters, projectile mass and pp-transfer channels, strongly influencing the population of the high-spin isomer of 211^{211}Po (25/2+^+). This is the first experimental and theoretical investigation on the IRs of nuclei produced via different channels of MNT reactions, with the latter quantitatively underestimating the former by a factor of two.Comment: 5 figure

    Development of a polymer endovascular prosthesis and its implantation in porcine arteries

    A polyethylene-terephthalate braided mesh stent has been developed for application in the (coronary) arterial tree. In vitro measurements showed that the radial pressure delivered by this device was in the same range as that of a stainless steel stent. Hysteresis-like behavior, however, occurred after constraining the polyester stent for a period of only 15 minutes on a delivery system for percutaneous implantation. This implies that the polymer stent must be mounted on this delivery system immediately before the placement procedure, and that either a diameter in the unconstrained condition must be selected, which is considerably larger than the diameter of the target vessel, or stent expansion has to be enhanced by balloon expansion. Taking into account the results obtained during the in vitro studies, we investigated the angiographic patency and histologic features after implantation of this polyester stent in peripheral arteries of pigs. In four animals eight stents were placed. Except for heparin during the implantation procedure only, antithrombotic or antiplatelet drugs were not administered. After 4 weeks repeat angiography was performed. Angiography revealed that five of the six correctly placed stents were patent. At autopsy, two additional patent stents proved to be located in the aortic bifurcation, probably due to failure of the delivery system. Quantitative assessment showed that the mean luminal diameters of the site of stent placement were 3.3 +/- 0.2 mm before, 3.2 +/- 0.2 mm immediately after, and 3.1 +/- 0.3 mm at 4 weeks after implantation. Histology demonstrated an inflammatory reaction of variable severity around the stent fibers. Quantitative histologic measurements showed that the thickness of the neointima was 114 +/- 38 mum after 4 weeks. In conclusion, polyester stents can be constructed with mechanical properties similar to stainless steel stents. Hysteresis-like behavior of polyester stents, however, influences the selection of the nominal stent diameter as well as the forces exerted to the vessel wall. After implantation in porcine peripheral arteries, five of six correctly placed stents were patent at 4 weeks. The extent of neointimal proliferation was similar to that observed after placement of metal stents in swine, despite the presence of a more pronounced inflammatory reaction
