Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to analyze the influence of behavioral factors on the propensity for indebtedness of university students.Design/methodology/approach – The study investigated a random sample of 319 students from a private university in São Paulo. Using the Modeling of Structural Equations, the behavioral factors were measured. For the data analysis, descriptive statistics and median difference tests (Mann-Whitney U test) and independence tests (Chi-square test) were performed.Findings – The findings indicate that: a) the behavior factor presents the strongest effect on the propensity to debt; b) the degree of indebtedness is influenced by sociodemographic variables (gender, race, marital status, occupation and income); c) the levels of risk perception, materialism and propensity for indebtedness are the same for indebted and non-indebted groups; d) the levels of financial behavior and rationality differ between indebted and non-indebted groups. Research limitations/implications – The data collection was carried out in a metropolitan region where the cohort surveyed has specific characteristics that make it difficult to generalize the results.Practical implications – These results may be useful in assisting: a) school leaders in the design of educational programs; b) the financial system in the development of financial strategies and products.Social implications – Educational policy makers can take action to improve the most vulnerable groups.Originality/value – The main theoretical contribution of this work was made by the integrated analysis of four different constructs on the propensity for indebtedness of university students: materialism, rationality, financial behavior and risk perception.

Immunolocalization of steroidogenic enzymes in the vaginal mucous of Galea spixii during the estrous cycle.

BackgroundThe synthesis of sex steroids is controlled by several enzymes such as17α-hydroxylase cytochrome P450 (P450c17) catalyzing androgen synthesis and aromatase cytochrome P450 (P450arom) catalyzing estrogen synthesis, both of which must complex with the redox partner NADPH-cytochrome P450 oxidoreductase (CPR) for activity. Previous studies have identified expression of steroidogenic enzymes in vaginal tissue, suggesting local sex steroid synthesis. The current studies investigate P450c17, P450aromatase and CPR expression in vaginal mucosa of Galea spixii (Spix cavy) by immuno-histochemical and western immunoblot analyses.MethodsStages of estrous cyclicity were monitored by vaginal exfoliative cytology. After euthanasia, vaginal tissues were retrieved, fixed and frozen at diestrus, proestrus, estrus and metestrus. The ovaries and testis were used as positive control tissues for immunohistochemistry.ResultsData from cytological study allowed identification of different estrous cycle phases. Immunohistochemical analysis showed different sites of expression of steroidogenic enzymes along with tissue response throughout different phases of the estrous cycle. However, further studies are needed to characterize the derived hormones synthesized by, and the enzymes activities associated with, vaginal tissues.ConclusionCurrent results not only support the expression of enzymes involved in sex steroid synthesis in the wall of the vagina, they also indicate that expression changes with the stage of the cycle, both the levels and types of cells exhibiting expression. Thus, changes in proliferation of vaginal epithelial cells and the differentiation of the mucosa may be influenced by local steroid synthesis as well as circulating androgens and estrogens

INPUTS AND OUTPUTS OF INNOVATION: ANALYSIS OF THE BRICS

Based on the importance of innovation to global competitiveness and the importance that the Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa countries represent for the world economy, the purpose of this study is to analyze the innovation progress of BRICS as a block and its individual members from 2008 to 2013. The Global Innovation Index was used as a source of data due to its recognized importance. Innovation is measured by inputs and outputs in this data bank. Two analyses were done. First, the innovation index of BRICS was analyzed as a whole showing a drastic decrease in the innovation index during the economic crises of 2008–2009 followed by a timid recovery. Second, a regression analysis between inputs and outputs for each country is run. The regression analysis by country presents a small R2 showing that the relation between inputs and outputs cannot be satisfactorily explained. However, when the BRICS group is considered it shows a significant relation with R2 = 64%

The goal of this article is to comprehend and identify the educational developmental process of the French woman in the time frame between 1815 through 1848. Other objectives of this study include the feminine amplitude and influence in XIX century French society through two romantic works, The Memoirs of Two Young Wives and The Employees of Honoré de Balzac. The education of the protagonists, Luíza de Chaulieu and Celestina Rabourdin, reveals that through the family and social order the women learn to: accentuate beauty with an impeccable style of dress, utilize the latest fashions, entertain guests, visit others within appropriate protocol, and meet important and influencial people with the intention of reaching personal objectives

High Heels, Empty Bottles and Other Interesting Pedagogical Artefacts Mediating Social Movement Learning

How does individual transformation unfold within social movement learning, a territory that mainly embodies learning as a collective practice? How do the visual and performing arts, as research tools, mediate such individual transformation while simultaneously promoting community engagement and critical dialogue amongst members of social movements and the general public? Interweaving social movement and transformative learning theories along with queer performance theory, this arts–based and participatory study answers these questions by describing and articulating two art interventions and the subsequent discourse and politics that emerged from these two scenarios. The first scenario unfolded during a series of painting workshops facilitated with members of the National Recycling Social Movement (MNCR) in 2017 in São Paulo, Brazil. The second scenario unfolded as a series of drag performances in Edmonton, Canada. By exploring the potentialities of visual and performing arts to understand social movement learning through the arts, people were asked to engage internal and external dialectical relationships that mediate their construction of visual and performative thought. Such creative thinking awakened a higher level of human consciousness, enabling individuals to construct new knowledge. This new knowledge empowered participants and enabled an agency which they later used to promote community development and social change

In this article, we consider a one-dimensional symmetric exclusion process in weak contact with reservoirs at the boundary. In the diffusive time-scaling the empirical measure evolves according to the heat equation with Robin boundary conditions. We prove the associated dynamical large deviations principle

To analyze the consumption of sweeteners and dietetic foods by individuals with type 2 diabetes, assisted by the Brazilian National Health System, in the city of Ribeirão Preto, SP. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Through a questionnaire were interviewed 120 patients were interviewed, stratified by sex, age and level of health care. RESULTS: The use of sweeteners is very frequent by the population in study, with predominance of the liquid type, and the use of dietetic foods is less common, with predominance of soft drinks. The diagnosis of diabetes was determinant for starting the use of both and the used criterion for selection of the sweetener is its flavor. The percentage of the population that knows the difference between diet and light products, that has the habit to read labels, and that is worried with the amount used of sweetener, is small. CONCLUSION: There is a need to include information about the adequate use of these products in the health care activities for patients with diabetes in the different levels of the Brazilian National Health System

Recycling Stories: Community Art and Deliberative Democracy Opening Spaces for Civic Engagement

How can we create meaningful spaces of engagement for citizens who work in the recycling industry in Brazil who suffer marginalization? What can we learn from the Brazilian experience of opening spaces of engagement? Seeking answers for these questions, we entered the journey of participatory action and arts–based research and developed a series of visual arts workshops and public exhibits in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. In this context, the objective of this study is to explore the diverse role of the arts in not just creating spaces for engagement that are inherently deliberatively democratic, but also holding the space for dialogue, knowledge construction and mobilization, and civic engagement
