    Domain size heterogeneity in the Ising model: geometrical and thermal transitions

    A measure of cluster size heterogeneity (HH), introduced by Lee et al [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 84}, 020101 (2011)] in the context of explosive percolation, was recently applied to random percolation and to domains of parallel spins in the Ising and Potts models. It is defined as the average number of different domain sizes in a given configuration and a new exponent was introduced to explain its scaling with the size of the system. In thermal spin models, however, physical clusters take into account the temperature-dependent correlation between neighboring spins and encode the critical properties of the phase transition. We here extend the measure of HH to these clusters and, moreover, present new results for the geometric domains for both d=2d=2 and 3. We show that the heterogeneity associated with geometric domains has a previously unnoticed double peak, thus being able to detect both the thermal and percolative transition. An alternative interpretation for the scaling of HH that does not introduce a new exponent is also proposed.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

    A branching random-walk model of disease outbreaks and the percolation backbone

    The size and shape of the region affected by an outbreak is relevant to understand the dynamics of a disease and help to organize future actions to mitigate similar events. A simple extension of the SIR model is considered, where agents diffuse on a regular lattice and the disease may be transmitted when an infected and a susceptible agents are nearest neighbors. We study the geometric properties of both the connected cluster of sites visited by infected agents (outbreak cluster) and the set of clusters with sites that have not been visited. By changing the density of agents, our results show that there is a mixed-order (hybrid) transition where the region affected by the disease is finite in one phase but percolates through the system beyond the threshold. Moreover, the outbreak cluster seems to have the same exponents of the backbone of the critical cluster of the ordinary percolation while the clusters with unvisited sites have a size distribution with a Fisher exponent τ<2\tau<2.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure

The crumpled surface is represented by a cluster of spins pointing up and spins pointing down represent the air both inside and around the surface. We follow the time dynamics of this fractal structure and we have shown that it presents a stretched exponential behaviour

    We consider nonequilibrium probabilistic dynamics in logistic-like maps xt+1=1axtzx_{t+1}=1-a|x_t|^z, (z>1)(z>1) at their chaos threshold: We first introduce many initial conditions within one among W>>1W>>1 intervals partitioning the phase space and focus on the unique value qsen<1q_{sen}<1 for which the entropic form Sq1i=1Wpiqq1S_q \equiv \frac{1-\sum_{i=1}^{W} p_i^q}{q-1} {\it linearly} increases with time. We then verify that Sqsen(t)Sqsen()S_{q_{sen}}(t) - S_{q_{sen}}(\infty) vanishes like t1/[qrel(W)1]t^{-1/[q_{rel}(W)-1]} [qrel(W)>1q_{rel}(W)>1]. We finally exhibit a new finite-size scaling, qrel()qrel(W)Wqsenq_{rel}(\infty) - q_{rel}(W) \propto W^{-|q_{sen}|}. This establishes quantitatively, for the first time, a long pursued relation between sensitivity to the initial conditions and relaxation, concepts which play central roles in nonextensive statistical mechanics.Comment: Final version with new Title and small modifications.     Sua cadeia de suprimentos está preparada para a próxima interrupção? Construindo cadeias resilientes

    A habilidade em se recuperar de interrupções é um importante fator para as organizações e suas cadeias de suprimentos. Dados empíricos foram utilizados para investigar fatores que impactam a recuperação das cadeias de suprimentos em face de interrupções, como a colaboração, visibilidade, flexibilidade, orientação analítica e a gestão de riscos. Uma revisão de literatura foi conduzida para desenvolver o questionário que foi aplicado em indústrias de transformação do Brasil. Os métodos estatísticos utilizados incluem a análise fatorial confirmatória e a modelagem de equações estruturais. Os resultados indicam que o pacote de capabilidades em resiliência – colaboração, flexibilidade, visibilidade e orientação analítica – impacta positivamente a resiliência das cadeias de suprimentos. Assim, aprimorar essas capabilidades permitirá uma recuperação mais adequada de interrupções. Também se constatou que a gestão de riscos, sozinha, não favorece a recuperação de interrupções. Adicionalmente, existe um impacto mútuo entre as capabilidades em resiliência e a gestão de riscos

    The northernmost haulout site of South American sea lions and fur seals in the western South Atlantic

    We present estimates of the seasonal and spatial occupation by pinnipeds of the Wildlife Refuge of Ilha dos Lobos (WRIL), based on aerial photographic censuses. Twenty aerial photographic censuses were analysed between July 2010 and November 2018. To assess monthly differences in the numbers of pinnipeds in the WRIL we used a Generalized Linear Mixed Model. Spatial analysis was carried out using Kernel density analysis of the pinnipeds on a grid plotted along the WRIL. Subadult male South American sea lions (Otaria flavescens) were the most abundant pinniped in the WRIL. Potential females of this species were also recorded during half of the census. The maximum number of pinnipeds observed in the WRIL was 304 in September 2018, including an unexpected individual southern elephant seal (Mirounga leonina), and a high number of South American fur seal yearlings (Arctocephalus australis). However, there was no statistically significant difference in counts between months. In all months analysed, pinnipeds were most often found concentrated in the northern portion of the island, with the highest abundances reported in September. This study confirms the importance of the WRIL as a haulout site for pinnipeds in Brazil, recommends that land research and recreational activities occur in months when no pinnipeds are present, and encourages a regulated marine mammal-based tourism during winter and spring months.Fil: Procksch, Natália.     Medical assessments and measurements in ELSA-Brasil

    Este artigo descreve os exames clínicos realizados no Estudo Longitudinal de Saúde do Adulto (ELSA-Brasil). Alguns deles (antropometria, pressão arterial e índice tornozelo-braquial) já têm uso clínico consolidado. Outros, como a velocidade de onda de pulso, variabilidade da frequência cardíaca e medida da espessura médio-intimal de carótidas, carecem de valor de referência na população brasileira não doente e podem constituir preditores importantes de desfechos cardiovasculares. A medida da pressão arterial após manobra postural foi incluída no ELSA-Brasil porque foi pouco testada em estudos epidemiológicos. O ELSA-Brasil inovou na realização do índice tornozelo-braquial, ao usar um aparelho automático em substituição à coluna de mercúrio na medida da pressão arterial, e também na medida do diâmetro ântero-posterior do lobo direito do fígado pela ultrassonografia, proposta para avaliação quantitativa da doença hepática gordurosa não-alcoólica. Os participantes são indivíduos mais jovens (a partir dos 35 anos) do que em outras coortes focadas no estudo da aterosclerose subclínica. A inclusão de indivíduos mais jovens e a diversidade dos exames realizados tornam o ELSA-Brasil um estudo relevante no contexto da epidemiologia brasileira e internacional.The article describes assessments and measurements performed in the Brazilian Longitudinal Study for Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil). Some assessments including anthropometric assessment, casual blood pressure measurement, and ankle-brachial index have an established clinical application while others including pulse wave velocity, heart rate variability, and carotid intima-media thickness have no established application and do not have reference values for healthy Brazilian population but may be important predictors of cardiovascular outcomes. Blood pressure measurement following postural change maneuver was included in the ELSA-Brasil because it has not been much tested in epidemiological studies. Innovative approaches were developed for assessing the ankle-brachial index using an automatic device instead of the mercury column to measure blood pressure and for assessing the anterior-posterior diameter of the right lobe of the liver by ultrasound for quantitative assessment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. All ELSA-Brasil subjects were younger (35 years or more) than those included in other cohorts studying subclinical atherosclerosis. The inclusion of younger individuals and a variety of assessments make the ELSA-Brasil a relevant epidemiology study nationwide and worldwide

    Pervasive gaps in Amazonian ecological research

    Biodiversity loss is one of the main challenges of our time,1,2 and attempts to address it require a clear un derstanding of how ecological communities respond to environmental change across time and space.3,4 While the increasing availability of global databases on ecological communities has advanced our knowledge of biodiversity sensitivity to environmental changes,5–7 vast areas of the tropics remain understudied.8–11 In the American tropics, Amazonia stands out as the world’s most diverse rainforest and the primary source of Neotropical biodiversity,12 but it remains among the least known forests in America and is often underrepre sented in biodiversity databases.13–15 To worsen this situation, human-induced modifications16,17 may elim inate pieces of the Amazon’s biodiversity puzzle before we can use them to understand how ecological com munities are responding. To increase generalization and applicability of biodiversity knowledge,18,19 it is thus crucial to reduce biases in ecological research, particularly in regions projected to face the most pronounced environmental changes. We integrate ecological community metadata of 7,694 sampling sites for multiple or ganism groups in a machine learning model framework to map the research probability across the Brazilian Amazonia, while identifying the region’s vulnerability to environmental change. 15%–18% of the most ne glected areas in ecological research are expected to experience severe climate or land use changes by 2050.
