Given the dissatisfaction associated with the purchase of food or the use of a service, the consumer may file
or write a complaint, using the legally established institutional channels. This research aims to assess the
reasons associated with filed and written complaints developed by the consumer for the Agro-food sector in
the Autonomous Region of Madeira, during the period of 2006-2008. A total of 5,657 documents registered in
the Regional Inspection Services of Economic Activities of the Autonomous Region of Madeira were analysed.
Three different questionnaires ( for filed complaints, written complaints and lawsuits) were developed to
standardize data collection. The agro-food sector accounted for 48.9% of written complaints and 22.2% of
filed complaints, with restaurants and retail food establishments accounting for the larger number of both
types of complaints. For written complaints, 55.3% reported a situation of no particular offence, while describing situations of lack of service or poor interaction with the consumer from the service provider. Lack of
cleanliness and hygiene was the offence that presented a greater concordance between what was described
by the consumer and the results of the authorities’ inspections. For other offences, the results alleged by the
consumer have not been verified by the inspection services. This lack of objectivity makes difficult to optimize
inspective actions and may cause dissatisfaction among consumers.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Public perceptions of hazards associated with Brazil nuts (Bertholletia excelsa) : evaluation of risk within an European context
One of the most important economic plants of the Amazon is the Brazil nut (Bertholletia
excelsa). Brazil nuts for international trade are mainly obtained from wild collection rather than
from plantations, often cited as one of the most important products of extractive reserves in
Amazonia. The European Commission (2003/493/EC) has imposed strict regulations on the
import from Brazil of Brazil nuts in their shells, as the shells have been found to contain high
levels of aflatoxins, which can lead to liver cancer. This may have a negative impact on the
Brazilian exports of shelled Brazil nuts, due to possible public awareness. The aim of the
present research is to assess public perceptions regarding Brazil nuts and to contrast these
with other nuts in general through the use of the Portuguese version of the Perceived Food
Risk Index (PFRI). A sample of 418 consumers was drawn through a door-to-door interview using a random route walk procedure and following a quota sampling controlled for sex, age and location. Consumers
were asked to choose the most relevant quality and preservation characteristics and to identify
their consumption patterns for Brazil nuts and for nuts in general. Risk perception was
evaluated over ten risk characteristics, for each of the following hazards: i) aflatoxins; ii)
biological contaminants; iii) organoleptic changes; iv) fragments and strange bodies and v)
microbial contamination. Additionally, subjects were asked to rate the probability of each hazard
occurring in Brazil nuts or in nuts in general. Results show high consumptions of nuts in general, and a reduced consumption of Brazil nuts, although with low differences on the dimensions of risk perception. Concluding, this work adds to knowledge about the perceptions of risk connected to Brazil nuts consumption, namely that consumers perceive Brazil nuts as safe as nuts in general
Atividade antinociceptiva de Ipomoea imperati (Vahl) Griseb., Convolvulaceae
Ipomoea imperati (Vahl) Griseb., Convolvulaceae, is used in folk medicine for the treatment of inflammation, swelling and wounds, as well as to treat pains after childbirth and for stomach problems. Administration of ethanol extract, lipid and aqueous fraction of I. imperati(300, 100 and 200 mg/kg) significantly inhibited the abdominal constriction in mice induced by acetic acid; increased the sleeping time evoked by pentobarbital sodium and showed a significant activity by inhibiting formalin-induced paw edema in mice. The same dose of I. imperatialso raised the pain of mice in the hot-plate test and increased the latency at all observation times. The pre-treatment of the animals with naloxone (5 mg/kg, i.p.) suggested the participation of the opioid system in the antinociceptive effect of Ipomoea imperati.

Cytotoxicity assessment of endodontic sealers: metabolic activity, morphology and chromosomal alterations
Introduction: Endodontic treatment aims to eliminate infection of the root canals and fill the dental pulp space, being, the obturation of root canals an important step. The study of the toxicity/biocompatibility of the sealers used to fill the root canals is crucial since they are applied into direct contact with periradicular tissues. There are several types of sealers, categorized according to their main chemical constituents. The aim of this study was to evaluate the cytotoxicity of three root canal sealers, AH Plus, Bio MTA+ and Bio C, on immortalized human gingival fibroblasts. Methods: To study the cytotoxicity of the sealers we performed a Methyltetrazolium (MTT) assay, a study of cell's morphology and a cytogenetic study. Cells were placed in contact with material-conditioned media, for 24 h, at three different concentrations (1, 10 and 100 mg/ml) for the MTT assay. Cell morphology and cytogenetic studies were performed at 100 mg/ml. Cells in normal culture medium were analyzed as control group. Results: MTT assay revealed a cytotoxic effect of Bio MTA+ and Bio C with a growing decrease of metabolic activity with increasing compound concentration, reaching 50% with 100 mg/ml. Regarding the cells morphology, Bio C was the compound that showed a more drastic effect, with a decrease in cell confluence and several morphological changes. AH Plus and Bio MTA+ did not seem to affect the cell confluence, however morphology changes were observed, as compromised cell membranes and loss of cell content. Cytogenetic study was thus far only performed with AH Plus. Since there was a severe decrease of mitotic index after treatment, it was not yet possible to obtain sufficient metaphases, even after several cytogenetic harvesting procedures, but, so far, no relevant structural or numerical changes were observed. Discussion: This preliminary study allowed us to verify that these root canal sealers exhibit some cytotoxicity, depending on the concentration used. Although more studies are still needed, this work could be important to both, help in the selection of the most appropriate compounds for clinical practice and to determine the maximum recommended amounts of each sealer.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Beyond restrictive: Sleeve Gastrectomy to Single Anastomosis Duodenoileal Bypass with Sleeve Gastrectomy as a spectrum of one single procedure
Introduction: Single Anastomosis Duodenal-Ileal Bypass with Sleeve Gastrectomy (SADI-S) is a restrictive/hypoabsorptive procedure recommended for patients with obesity class 3. For safety reasons, SADI-S can be splited into a two-step procedure by performing a sleeve gastrectomy (SG) first. This stepwise approach also provides an unprecedented opportunity to disentangle the weight loss mechanisms triggered by each component. The objective was to compare weight trajectories and postprandial endocrine and metabolic responses of patients with obesity class 3 submitted to SADI-S or sleeve gastrectomy (SG) as the first step of SADI-S. Methods: Subjects submitted to SADI-S (n=7) or SG (n=7) at a tertiary referral public academic hospital, underwent anthropometric evaluation and a liquid mixed meal tolerance test (MMTT) pre-operatively and at 3, 6, and 12 months post-operatively. Results: Anthropometric parameters, as well as metabolic and micronutrient profiles, were not significantly different between groups, neither before nor after surgery. There were no significant differences in fasting or post-prandial glucose, insulin, C-peptide, ghrelin, insulin secretion rate (ISR) and insulin clearance during the MMTT between subjects submitted to SADI-S and SG. There was no lost to follow-up. Conclusions: The restrictive component seems to be the main driver for weight loss and metabolic adaptations observed during the first 12 months after SADI-S, given that the weight trajectories and metabolic profiles do not differ from SG. This data provides support for a surgeons’ choice of a two-step SADI-S without jeopardizing the weight loss outcomes
Environmental and sanitary conditions of guanabara bay, Rio de Janeiro
Guanabara Bay is the second largest bay in the coast of Brazil, with an area of 384 km2. In its surroundings live circa 16 million inhabitants, out of which 6 million live in Rio de Janeiro city, one of the largest cities of the country, and the host of the 2016 Olympic Games. Anthropogenic interference in Guanabara Bay area started early in the XVI century, but environmental impacts escalated from 1930, when this region underwent an industrialization process. Herein we present an overview of the current environmental and sanitary conditions of Guanabara Bay, a consequence of all these decades of impacts. We will focus on microbial communities, how they may affect higher trophic levels of the aquatic community and also human health. The anthropogenic impacts in the bay are flagged by heavy eutrophication and by the emergence of pathogenic microorganisms that are either carried by domestic and/or hospital waste (e.g., virus, KPC-producing bacteria, and fecal coliforms), or that proliferate in such conditions (e.g., vibrios). Antibiotic resistance genes are commonly found in metagenomes of Guanabara Bay planktonic microorganisms. Furthermore, eutrophication results in recurrent algal blooms, with signs of a shift toward flagellated, mixotrophic groups, including several potentially harmful species. A recent large-scale fish kill episode, and a long trend decrease in fish stocks also reflects the bay’s degraded water quality. Although pollution of Guanabara Bay is not a recent problem, the hosting of the 2016 Olympic Games propelled the government to launch a series of plans to restore the bay’s water quality. If all plans are fully implemented, the restoration of Guanabara Bay and its shores may be one of the best legacies of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro
