    Get PDF
A retrospective evaluation of 24 patients with "floating knee" was done. Only in 7 (29%) cases this lesion was not associated to other lesions. The results have been evaluated according to the modified scale of Thorensen et al. (1985). The fracture pattern was very variable. One stage surgical treatment was carried out in 5 cases, in 7 cases definitive treatment was applied to the tibia and provisionally to the femur, and in 12 cases the treatment made in the emergency was provisional for both fractures. The final results were good in 16 cases (67%), fair in 6 (25%) and bad in 2 (8%). The length of hospital stay decreased when definitive treatment was made at once

En una primera aproximación han sido datados en el Bronce MedioThe reason for this article is to introduce some rock carvings found on Cerro del Riscal, a rocky shale outcrop nearby the small village of El Madroño, in the Northwest of the province of Sevilla. The interest on these carvings rest on their newness as they are the first ones of the type traced in the province, so they enlighten the polemics about the Peninsular Southwest, opening new perspectives to the search and study of other locations. On a preliminary aproach, they date from the Middle Bronze Ag

Birth weight and characteristics of endothelial and smooth muscle cell cultures from human umbilical cord vessels

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Low birth weight has been related to an increased risk for developing high blood pressure in adult life. The molecular and cellular analysis of umbilical cord artery and vein may provide information about the early vascular characteristics of an individual. We have assessed several phenotype characteristics of the four vascular cell types derived from human umbilical cords of newborns with different birth weight. Further follow-up studies could show the association of those vascular properties with infancy and adulthood blood pressure.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Endothelial and smooth muscle cell cultures were obtained from umbilical cords from two groups of newborns of birth weight less than 2.8 kg or higher than 3.5 kg. The expression of specific endothelial cell markers (von Willebrand factor, CD31, and the binding and internalization of acetylated low-density lipoprotein) and the smooth muscle cell specific α-actin have been evaluated. Cell culture viability, proliferation kinetic, growth fraction (expression of Ki67) and percentage of senescent cells (detection of β-galactosidase activity at pH 6.0) have been determined. Endothelial cell projection area was determined by morphometric analysis of cell cultures after CD31 immunodetection.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The highest variation was found in cell density at the confluence of endothelial cell cultures derived from umbilical cord arteries (66,789 ± 5,093 cells/cm2 vs. 45,630 ± 11,927 cells/cm2, p < 0.05). Morphometric analysis indicated that the projection area of the artery endothelial cells (1,161 ± 198 and 1,544 ± 472 μm2, p < 0.05), but not those derived from the vein from individuals with a birth weight lower than 2.8 kg was lower than that of cells from individuals with a birth weight higher than 3.5 kg.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The analysis of umbilical cord artery endothelial cells, which demonstrated differences in cell size related to birth weight, can provide hints about the cellular and molecular links between lower birth weight and increased adult high blood pressure risk.</p

Radium-223 dichloride: a new paradigm in the treatment of prostate cancer

Review[Abstract] Radionuclides have been widely used for cancer treatment. Recently, new research about radium-223 dichloride has been conducted in prostate cancer, which reveals that it is the first radiopharmaceutical to demonstrate an improvement in overall survival and time to first symptomatic skeletal event in patients with castration resistant prostate cancer with symptomatic bone metastases. This fact has created a new paradigm in the treatment of prostate cancer landscape, where only chemotherapy and hormone therapy had a role, while β-emitters had been confined exclusively to the role of pain relief with no impact on survival. The aim of this review is to outline current treatment approaches for advanced prostate cancer with a focus on the role of radium-223 dichloride, reviewing patients' profile that make them suitable to therapy and chances for further studies

Design of longitudinal finned tubes adjusted with the Cesàro curve

    Get PDF
This paper proposes a process of higher heat transfer efficiency, through a fractal design over Cesàro curve as an extend surface for an exchange tube. Our designs yielded better results applying finite element analysis compared with the smooth surface commonly used in the industry. This new adaptation can be oriented toward applications involving gases and viscous liquids, for devices such as motors, boilers and dissipaters, among others

Si a esta última alternativa se le agrega aislación exterior en muros, el ahorro asciende al 76.2%.Incorporating solar energy utilizations in the houses or buildings detached is nowadays simple and comparable to conventional architectural design. With minimum technological changes and without great expenditures, substantial energy savings can be obtained. A three bedroom house and the enlarged Solar Prototype are evaluated. With the computational simulation program SIMEDIF has been used to thermally assess the different technological alternatives and the Load Collector Ratio (LCR) method of LANL for the energy performance evaluation. Interior temperature increments are obtained by the progressive incorporation of simple technological interventions. In spite of the small temperature differences, significant energy savings are achieved. Besides, the reduction of the ACH, double glazing on south and west facing window and night insulation on north facing windows, is used an important savings of 38% are achieved. If, to the later alternatives insulation on exterior walls is added, the savings increase to 76.2%.Asociación Argentina de Energías Renovables y Medio Ambiente (ASADES
