It's OK not to be OK: Shared Reflections from two PhD Parents in a Time of Pandemic
Adopting an intersectional feminist lens, we explore our identities as single and co‐parents thrust into the new reality of the UK COVID‐19 lockdown. As two PhD students, we present shared reflections on our intersectional and divergent experiences of parenting and our attempts to protect our work and families during a pandemic. We reflect on the social constructions of ‘masculinities’ and ‘emphasized femininities’ as complicated influence on our roles as parents. Finally, we highlight the importance of time and self‐care as ways of managing our shared realities during this uncertain period. Through sharing reflections, we became closer friends in mutual appreciation and solidarity as we learned about each other’s struggles and vulnerabilities
Tourism and Pilgrimage: Paying Homage to Literary Heroes
By exploring the experiences of visiting the grave of famous authors, this study highlights the place of literary tourism in the tourism pilgrimage literature. It is based on an observational study of visitors to the grave of Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir in Paris. Analysis reveals that visitors were motivated by a desire for closeness, a wish to pay their respects and to acknowledge the influence on their life of the two writers. The study notes a strong parallel between the religious and the literary pilgrim, and contributes to knowledge on the phenomenon of the secular pilgrimage
«Jusqu’à nos désirs, jusqu’aux formes de notre plaisir»: feminism’s development in Les Temps modernes
Les Temps Modernes has been a basic ground for the growth both of the second-wave feminism and of the third-wave one, and has skaken old roles also by questioning traditional longings, as some writings we can (re)read here show: several remarks by Simone de Beauvoir, an article by Colette Audry, an issue of the column Le Sexisme ordinaire.
Optical frequency measurement of the 1S-3S two-photon transition in hydrogen
This article reports the first optical frequency measurement of the
transition in hydrogen. The excitation of this
transition occurs at a wavelength of 205 nm which is obtained with two
frequency doubling stages of a titanium sapphire laser at 820 nm. Its frequency
is measured with an optical frequency comb. The second-order Doppler effect is
evaluated from the observation of the motional Stark effect due to a transverse
magnetic field perpendicular to the atomic beam. The measured value of the
frequency splitting is with a relative uncertainty of
. After the measurement of the
frequency, this result is the most precise of the optical frequencies in
hydrogen
QED confronts the radius of the proton
Recent results on muonic hydrogen [1] and the ones compiled by CODATA on
ordinary hydrogen and -scattering [2] are away from each other.
Two reasons justify a further look at this subject: 1) One of the
approximations used in [1] is not valid for muonic hydrogen. This amounts to a
shift of the proton's radius by of the standard deviations of [1], in
the "right" direction of data-reconciliation. In field-theory terms, the error
is a mismatch of renormalization scales. Once corrected, the proton radius
"runs", much as the QCD coupling "constant" does. 2) The result of [1] requires
a choice of the "third Zemach moment". Its published independent determination
is based on an analysis with a -value --the probability of obtaining data
with equal or lesser agreement with the adopted (fit form-factor) hypothesis--
of . In this sense, this quantity is not empirically
known. Its value would regulate the level of "tension" between muonic- and
ordinary-hydrogen results, currently {\it at most} . There is no
tension between the results of [1] and the proton radius determined with help
of the analyticity of its form factors.Comment: Extended for publication in Physics Letter
Translucent γ-AlOOH and γ-Al2O3 glass-ceramics using the cold sintering process
Cold Sintering Process has been applied to hydroxide precursors Al(OH) 3 , xH 2 O to promote in situ reactive sintering. The application of sintering temperatures < 400 °C led to the release of OH groups and partial crystallization into boehmite γ-AlOOH. This latter step is accompanied by a densification stage leading to the production of dense translucent pellet. From skeletal density measurements, it appears that not all the pellet is composed of crystalline phase, but contains a mix of amorphous and crystalline phase. The presence of amorphous phase seems to favor the mechanical stability of the samples made of the inter- mediate boehmite phase, which is brittle due to its oriented layer structure. Further heat treatment in an oven at 500 °C induces the transformation of boehmite into γ-Al 2 O 3 . Here we demonstrate the possibility to produce optically translucent ceramics of low temperature stability gamma alumina structure
