Diversity Of Medium-sized And Large Mammals From Atlantic Forest Remnants In Southern Minas Gerais State, Brazil
Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Studies on mammal diversity provide the essential groundwork for the development of conservation methods and practices. The region of the Poços de Caldas Plateau is lacks such studies, which may be a problem for future conservation actions. Here, we analyze the richness of medium-sized and large mammals from Atlantic Forest remnants on the Poços de Caldas Plateau, Minas Gerais state. Diurnal censuses of direct observations and mammal signs were conducted, and we documented 20 species of mammals belonging to eight orders. Three species of primates, one carnivore, one cingulate, one lagomorpha, three rodents, one artiodactyla, and two marsupials were found. The largest forest remnant that presented the greatest richness is currently a conservation unit. Forest remnants are important for the consolidation of management strategies and have fundamental role for the conservation of mammal diversity in the south of Minas Gerais state. © 2016 Check List and Authors.125CNPq, Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e TecnológicoConselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq

A novel transflectance near infrared spectroscopy technique for monitoring hot melt extrusion
yesA transflectance near infra red (NIR) spectroscopy approach has been used to simultaneously measure drug and plasticiser content of polymer melts with varying opacity during hot melt extrusion. A high temperature reflectance NIR probe was mounted in the extruder die directly opposed to a highly reflective surface. Carbamazepine (CBZ) was used as a model drug, with polyvinyl pyrollidone-vinyl acetate co-polymer (PVP-VA) as a matrix and polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a plasticiser. The opacity of the molten extrudate varied from transparent at low CBZ loading to opaque at high CBZ loading. Particulate amorphous API and voids formed around these particles were found to cause the opacity. The extrusion process was monitored in real time using transflectance NIR; calibration and validation runs were performed using a wide range of drug and plasticiser loadings. Once calibrated, the technique was used to simultaneously track drug and plasticiser content during applied step changes in feedstock material. Rheological and thermal characterisations were used to help understand the morphology of extruded material. The study has shown that it is possible to use a single NIR spectroscopy technique to monitor opaque and transparent melts during HME, and to simultaneously monitor two distinct components within a formulation
Embedding a Native State into a Random Heteropolymer Model: The Dynamic Approach
We study a random heteropolymer model with Langevin dynamics, in the
supersymmetric formulation. Employing a procedure similar to one that has been
used in static calculations, we construct an ensemble in which the affinity of
the system for a native state is controlled by a "selection temperature" T0. In
the limit of high T0, the model reduces to a random heteropolymer, while for
T0-->0 the system is forced into the native state. Within the Gaussian
variational approach that we employed previously for the random heteropolymer,
we explore the phases of the system for large and small T0. For large T0, the
system exhibits a (dynamical) spin glass phase, like that found for the random
heteropolymer, below a temperature Tg. For small T0, we find an ordered phase,
characterized by a nonzero overlap with the native state, below a temperature
Tn \propto 1/T0 > Tg. However, the random-globule phase remains locally stable
below Tn, down to the dynamical glass transition at Tg. Thus, in this model,
folding is rapid for temperatures between Tg and Tn, but below Tg the system
can get trapped in conformations uncorrelated with the native state. At a lower
temperature, the ordered phase can also undergo a dynamical glass transition,
splitting into substates separated by large barriers.Comment: 19 pages, revtex, 6 figure
Relationship between dynamical heterogeneities and stretched exponential relaxation
We identify the dynamical heterogeneities as an essential prerequisite for
stretched exponential relaxation in dynamically frustrated systems. This
heterogeneity takes the form of ordered domains of finite but diverging
lifetime for particles in atomic or molecular systems, or spin states in
magnetic materials. At the onset of the dynamical heterogeneity, the
distribution of time intervals spent in such domains or traps becomes stretched
exponential at long time. We rigorously show that once this is the case, the
autocorrelation function of the renewal process formed by these time intervals
is also stretched exponential at long time.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PR
Universality of the Lyapunov regime for the Loschmidt echo
The Loschmidt echo (LE) is a magnitude that measures the sensitivity of
quantum dynamics to perturbations in the Hamiltonian. For a certain regime of
the parameters, the LE decays exponentially with a rate given by the Lyapunov
exponent of the underlying classically chaotic system. We develop a
semiclassical theory, supported by numerical results in a Lorentz gas model,
which allows us to establish and characterize the universality of this Lyapunov
regime. In particular, the universality is evidenced by the semiclassical limit
of the Fermi wavelength going to zero, the behavior for times longer than
Ehrenfest time, the insensitivity with respect to the form of the perturbation
and the behavior of individual (non-averaged) initial conditions. Finally, by
elaborating a semiclassical approximation to the Wigner function, we are able
to distinguish between classical and quantum origin for the different terms of
the LE. This approach renders an understanding for the persistence of the
Lyapunov regime after the Ehrenfest time, as well as a reinterpretation of our
results in terms of the quantum--classical transition.Comment: 33 pages, 17 figures, uses Revtex
Ordering in the dilute weakly-anisotropic antiferromagnet Mn(0.35)Zn(0.65)F2
The highly diluted antiferromagnet Mn(0.35)Zn(0.65)F2 has been investigated
by neutron scattering in zero field. The Bragg peaks observed below the Neel
temperature TN (approximately 10.9 K) indicate stable antiferromagnetic
long-range ordering at low temperature. The critical behavior is governed by
random-exchange Ising model critical exponents (nu approximately 0.69 and gamma
approximately 1.31), as reported for Mn(x)Zn(1-x)F2 with higher x and for the
isostructural compound Fe(x)Zn(1-x)F2. However, in addition to the Bragg peaks,
unusual scattering behavior appears for |q|>0 below a glassy temperature Tg
approximately 7.0 K. The glassy region T<Tg corresponds to that of noticeable
frequency dependence in earlier zero-field ac susceptibility measurements on
this sample. These results indicate that long-range order coexists with
short-range nonequilibrium clusters in this highly diluted magnet.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
Distribution of resonances for open quantum maps
We analyze simple models of classical chaotic open systems and of their
quantizations (open quantum maps on the torus). Our models are similar to
models recently studied in atomic and mesoscopic physics. They provide a
numerical confirmation of the fractal Weyl law for the density of quantum
resonances of such systems. The exponent in that law is related to the
dimension of the classical repeller (or trapped set) of the system. In a
simplified model, a rigorous argument gives the full resonance spectrum, which
satisfies the fractal Weyl law. For this model, we can also compute a quantity
characterizing the fluctuations of conductance through the system, namely the
shot noise power: the value we obtain is close to the prediction of random
matrix theory.Comment: 60 pages, no figures (numerical results are shown in other
