In this article we synthesize some specific aspects of scientific journalism and identified the presence of some of these elements in the interpretations of physics undergraduates acquired while reading popular scientific texts from the journals Ciência Hoje and Pesquisa Fapesp. We believe that the relationship between undergraduates interpretation and some journalism characteristics seem to suggest that the potentialities and limits in the use of scientific popularization magazines for teaching effective situations could be linked to conditions in which those texts are produced.

We propose an analytical device for reading of scientific popularization. We specify some characteristics of journalisticdiscourse, based on the newsworthiness and scientific journalism for the construction of an analytical device for analysis ofreading scientific popularization texts about physics in the magazines Ciência Hoje and Pesquisa Fapesp. This device was put in place during a reading activity with undergraduate students of physics. The analysis showed specificities of journalistic discourseon their interpretations, which justify the elaboration of the device

School-age children are frequently at high risk for the onset of biofilm-dependent conditions, including dental caries and periodontal diseases. The objective of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of a dentifrice containing Eugenia uniflora Linn. (Surinam cherry) extract versus a triclosan-based comparator in treating gingivitis in children aged 10-12 years. The in vitro antibacterial potential of the dentifrice was tested against oral pathogens (Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus oralis and Lactobacillus casei). Then a phase-II clinical trial was conducted with 50 subjects aged 10-12 years, with clinical signs of gingivitis. The subjects were randomly assigned to the experimental group (n=25) and control group (n=25), in which participants used the experimental dentifrice and a triclosan-based fluoridated dentifrice (Colgate Total 12(r)), respectively. Clinical examinations assessed the presence of gingivitis (primary outcome) and biofilm accumulation (secondary outcome) using the Gingival-Bleeding Index (GBI) and Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (OHI-S), respectively, at baseline and after seven days of tooth brushing 3x/day. The data were analyzed using paired and unpaired t-test (GBI) and Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney (OHI-S), with p≤0.05. The experimental dentifrice showed efficient antibacterial activity in vitro. In the clinical trial, a significant reduction in gingival bleeding was observed in both experimental and control groups (p<0.0001), with no statistical difference between them (p=0.178), although a small size effect was observed. Biofilm accumulation was only reduced in the control group (p=0.0039). In conclusion, E. uniflora dentifrice showed anti-gingivitis properties in children aged 10-12 years. Thus, it may be a potentially efficient and safe product to be used alternatively in preventive dental practice27438739

Particle & Particle Systems Characterization published by Wiley-VCH GmbH.Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are widely used in biomedical diagnostics due to their unique plasmonic properties, with larger AuNPs showing higher extinction coefficients for the plasmon band and, consequently, more intense colors than the more commonly used spherical 20 nm AuNPs. Other factors can be important in the performance of different-sized AuNPs, including surface area, colloidal stability, and curvature effects. Here, the properties of spherical 20 nm AuNPs and 35 nm AuNPs functionalized with a specific thiol-modified oligonucleotide–Au nanoprobes are compared when used on a colorimetric assay for the detection of a single nucleotide polymorphism related to lactose intolerance in humans. Successful functionalization of AuNPs is assessed by UV–vis spectroscopy, agarose gel electrophoresis, dynamic and electrophoretic light scattering, and nanoparticle tracking analysis. Statistical differences between Au-nanoprobe DNA target groups are calculated using analysis of variance and a post hoc Tukey's test. These results show that both 35 and 20 nm Au nanoprobes have similar detection limits using a 0.15 nmol dm−3 nanoprobe concentration compared to 2.5 nmol dm−3. Interestingly, the use of 35 nm Au nanoprobes allows a reduction of 80% and 48% in the amount of gold and oligonucleotide used in the assay, respectively.publishersversionpublishe

Portuguese translation and Brazilian cultural adaptation of the Assessment of Burden in Chronic Venous Disease questionnaire (ABC-V)

Introduction: The Assessment of Burden in Chronic Venous Disease questionnaire (ABC-V) is a valuable tool for assessing the impact that chronic venous disease (CVD) has on patients’ quality of life (QL). There was a need for a translated and adapted version suitable for use in the Brazilian population. CVD is becoming a public health issue as the incidence and prevalence are high. The ABC-V can be used to collect information on patients’ QL and thus the development of a Brazilian version that facilitates research into the CVD population.  Objective: To provide translation and cultural validation of the Assessment of Burden in Chronic-Venous Disease (ABC-V) questionnaire for the Portuguese language.  Methods: The ABC-V was translated into Portuguese by two bilingual translators working independently. The translators then created a consensus version, which was translated back into English by two native English speakers. Finally all the versions were analysed by a committee of with expertise in translation and the two cultures involved. The committee produced a draft Portuguese-language version which was tested in a pilot sample of between 30 and 40 people. The committee evaluated feedback from the pilot sample on the clarity and comprehensibility of the draft version.  Results: The draft version was completed by 31 patients at the Chronic Venous Diseases Department of Padre Anchieta’s Teaching Hospital. With the analysis of the questionnaires used in the pre-test, it is possible to observe that in English, unlike Portuguese, verbs are often used in the passive tense. It also emerged that there was a need to use more colloquial terms and expressions so that the question would be easier to understand, whilst preserving the meaning of the original items. Changing the tone of the questionnaire in this way should make it more suitable for use with people from a wide range of socioeconomic levels, especially those with lower social status and less education. Because the questions are qualitative rather than quantitative they are more open to interpretation and elicit more subjective responses. This creates an additional difficulty in adapting the questionnaire for the Brazilian cultural context. The data from pilot-testing of the draft version was used to develop a translated and culturally adapted version of the ABC-V using the procedure described by Beaton et al.  Conclusion: A translated and culturally adapted version of the ABC-V suitable for use in Brazil has been developed and can be used to evaluate changes in the QL of Brazilian patients with CVD.  Introduction: The Assessment of Burden in Chronic Venous Disease questionnaire (ABC-V) is a valuable tool for assessing the impact that chronic venous disease (CVD) has on patients’ quality of life (QL). Pyoderma gangrenosum can present as a cutaneous manifestation of paraneoplastic syndromes. A case of bullous pyoderma gangrenosum associated with bicytopenia is described. During the complementary investigation, myelogram, bone marrow biopsy and karyotype were performed, and showed a pattern consistent with myelodysplastic syndrome. The patient was treated with dapsone with improvement. Pyoderma gangrenosum can be a manifestation of systemic diseases. The possibility of myelodysplastic syndrome should always be considered in patients with pyoderma gangrenosum associated with cytopenia. Pyoderma gangrenosum could indicate poorer prognosis in patients with systemic diseases.O pioderma gangrenoso pode apresentar-se como manifestação paraneoplásica.
