    Deslocamento apical produzido por instrumentos de níquel-titânio acionados a motor e limas de aço inoxidável

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the apical displacement produced by different rotary nickel-titanium instruments, testing the hypothesis that rotary systems with nickel-titanium instruments produce lower mean values of apical displacement than stainless steel hand instruments. A total of 100 maxillary permanent first molars were selected for the study. The mesiobuccal roots were sectioned at the top cervical third and embedded in blocks of self-curing resin. The specimens were randomly divided into 5 groups and the root canals were prepared using the following nickel-titanium instruments: Group 1 - Quantec system 2000 (Analytic Endodontics, Mexico); Group 2 - Pro-File T.0.04 (Dentsply/Maillefer, Switzerland); Group 3 - Pro-File Series 29 T.0.04 (Dentsply Tulsa, Switzerland); Group 4 - Pow-R T.0.02 (Moyco-Union Broach, USA). Specimens in Group 5 were prepared using stainless steel hand instruments Flexofile (Dentsply/Maillefer, Switzerland). All root canals were previously submitted to cervical preparation using Orifice Shaper instruments #1, 2, 3 and 4 (Dentsply/Maillefer, Switzerland). After odontometry, the remaining root canal was shaped employing increasingly larger instruments, so that the final instrument corresponded to Quantec #9, Pro-File Series 29 #6, and #35 for the other groups. Specimens in Groups 1 to 4 were prepared using an electric handpiece with 16:1 reduction at 350 rpm. The specimens in Group 5 were manually prepared. Apical displacement was measured and recorded by means of radiographic superimposition on a specific desk. Statistical analysis (ANOVA) of the results revealed that all groups presented apical displacements. Considering only the nickel-titanium instruments, Group 4 showed the lowest mean value while Groups 2 and 3 produced the highest mean apical displacement values (pO objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o deslocamento apical produzido por diferentes instrumentos de níquel-titânio acionadas a motor testando a hipótese de que os sistemas rotatórios que usam instrumentos de níquel-titânio produzem valores médios de deslocamento apical menores que as limas manuais de aço inox. Foram utilizados 100 primeiros molares permanentes superiores, cujas raízes mesiovestibulares foram separadas e incluídas em blocos de resina autopolimerizável. Os corpos de prova foram divididos aleatoriamente em 5 grupos e os canais radiculares preparados com instrumentos de níquel-titânio: Grupo 1 - sistema Quantec 2000 (Analytic Endodontics, México); Grupo 2 - Pro-File T.0.04 (Dentsply/Maillefer, Suíça); Grupo 3 - Pro-File Série 29 T.0.04 (Dentsply Tulsa, Suíça); Grupo 4 - Pow-R T.0.02 (Moyco-Union Broach, EUA); e Grupo 5 (limas manuais) - limas manuais de aço inox Flexofile (Dentsply/Maillefer, Suíça). Todos os canais mesiovestibulares foram submetidos a um preparo cervical prévio utilizando-se instrumentos Orifice Shaper números 1, 2, 3 e 4 (Dentsply/Maillefer, Suíça). Realizada a odontometria, o restante do canal radicular foi modelado a partir dos instrumentos do menor para o maior calibre de tal ordem que o instrumento final de preparo correspondeu ao número 9 para o Quantec, número 06 para o Pro-File Série 29 e o número 35 para os demais grupos. Nos grupos de 1 a 4 foi utilizado motor elétrico com contra-ângulo de redução de 16:1 numa velocidade de 350 rpm. No grupo 5 o preparo foi realizado manualmente. A análise dos resultados (ANOVA), obtidos pela sobreposição radiográfica numa plataforma especifica, demonstraram que todos os grupos apresentaram deslocamentos apicais, sendo que o menor valor médio foi verificado no grupo 4 e os maiores valores médios foram observados nos grupos 2 e 3 (

    Cyclic Fatigue Resistance of Mtwo Rotary Instruments with two Different Instrumentation Techniques

    Introduction: The objective of this in vitro study was to evaluate whether cervical preparation with Mtwo files in a crown-down technique influences instrumentation time and the cyclic fatigue resistance of these instruments. Methods and Materials: Two instrumentation techniques were evaluated (manufacturer and crown-down). Each group consisted of 10 kits containing four Mtwo instruments (10/0.04, 15/0.05, 20/0.06, and 25/0.06), which were used to prepare three standard simulated curved resin canals. The mean instrumentation time and the corresponding number of cycles for each instrumentation (NCI) were recorded. The instruments were rotated at a constant speed of 300 rpm in a stainless-steel canal (diameter of 1.5 mm) at a 90° angle of curvature and 5-mm radius. The center of the curvature was 5 mm from the tip of the instrument. The cyclic fatigue resistance of the files was determined by counting the number of cycles to failure (NCF). Data were analyzed by the Mann-Whitney test. Results: The mean instrumentation time and NCI of files 10/0.04 and 15/0.05 were significantly lower (P<0.05) when the crown-down technique was used compared to the manufacturer’s method for the same tip size/taper file. There was no significant difference in the mean NCF between the two techniques. Conclusion: The crown-down technique did not interfere with resistance to cyclic fatigue. However, the shorter instrumentation time of files 10/0.04 and 15/0.05 could reduce the fracture risk in the case of reuse of these instruments.Keywords: Crown Down; Cycles to Failure; Cyclic Fatigue; Instrument Fracture; Root Canal Instrumentation

    Nonsurgical Endodontic Treatment of Type II Dens Invaginatus in A Maxillary Lateral Incisor: A Case Report

    Dens invaginatus (DI) is one of the developmental dental anomalies that results in an invagination of the enamel organ into the dental papila during odontogenesis. The purpose of this study is to report a case of nonsurgical endodontic treatment of an Oehlers type II DI in a right maxillary lateral incisor with an extensive periapical damage, along with the two-year clinical and tomographic follow-up. A 30-year-old patient was referred for endodontic treatment of tooth #12. On clinical examination, a change in the shape and color of the crown was observed. The tooth responded negative to pulp sensibility, percussion, palpation and mobility tests. After tomographic evaluation, an Oehlers type II DI was visualized, in addition to an extensive periradicular lesion. The diagnosis was asymptomatic apical periodontitis. The treatment was carried out in two sessions, through intense enhancement of the auxiliary chemical substance with passive ultrasonic irrigation, XP-Endo Finisher and the use of hydroxide-based intracanal medication. Appropriate treatment in cases with anatomic variations requires an accurate and early diagnosis based on clinical examination and radiographic images. A two-year follow-up of the present case showed that the correct diagnosis associated with appropriate instrumentation techniques, supplementary disinfection, and adequate three-dimensional sealing of the canal with filling material, resulted in regression of the periradicular lesion and bone repair

    Retratamento endodôntico associado à instalação de retentor de fibra de vidro: relato de caso: Endodontic retreatment associated with the installation of fiberglass retainer: case report

    Após o tratamento endodôntico, o surgimento ou a permanência de sinais e/ou sintomas inflamatórios e infecciosos refletem o insucesso, sendo indicado o retratamento endodôntico. Neste relato de caso, foi descrito o retratamento do incisivo lateral superior esquerdo realizado em sessão única com instalação de retentor intra-radicular de fibra de vidro. Paciente foi encaminhada para a Clínica de Especialização em Endodontia da Faculdade COESP com achados de escurecimento dentário, restauração em resina composta infiltrada, tratamento endodôntico insatisfatoriamente obturado e rarefação óssea circunscrita na região periapical. O diagnóstico clínico pulpar e periapical estabelecido foi de tratamento endodôntico prévio e periodontite apical assintomática. Após abertura coronária, removeu-se guta-percha com inserto ultrassônico e microscópio operatório, seguido do uso de instrumento mecanizado Reciproc® R25. Durante o procedimento, foi usada solução de NaOCl a 2,5%. A odontometria eletrônica foraminal foi seguida de novo preparo do canal com os instrumentos Reciproc® Blue R40 e R50. Para qualificar a limpeza, foram utilizados instrumentos mecanizados XP Endo Finisher e irrigação ultrassônica passiva com solução de NaOCl a 2,5% e EDTA a 17%. Após a obturação do canal e preparo de espaço intra-radicular, instalou-se um retentor de fibra de vidro e a coroa selada com resina composta. O retratamento realizado com auxílio de tecnologias favorece a limpeza e desinfecção dos canais. A reabilitação de forma imediata e minimamente invasiva permite a satisfação estética, funcionalidade biomecânica e menor chance de recontaminação intracanal.     Morphological, agronomical and pharmacological characterization of Hyptis pectinata (L.) Poit germplasm

    Several species of the genus Hyptis have presented medicinal characteristics and are frequently indicated to treat gastro intestinal infections, gramps and pain, as well as for skin infections. Three harvests were carried out using six H. pectinata accessions, and the following characteristics were evaluated: plant height, canopy diameter, leave length (L) and width (W), L/W relation and dry weight of leaves and stem. The accession SAM006 have presented highest leave dry matter yield when the three harvests were summed. The aqueous leaf extracts of the same six H. pectinata accessions were tested for anti-edematogenic effect using the carrageenin-induced rat paw edema at doses of 200, 400 and 600 mg/kg. The extracts administered orally had a significant anti-edematogenic effect. The dose of 200 mg/kg of accessions SAM004 and SAM005 had a stronger effect reducing the edema by 19.6% and 15.4%, respectively. Similar results were obtained using higher dosages of the aqueous extract of the accessions SAM002, SAM003 and SAM006. It can be concluded that the accessions SAM004, SAM005 and SAM006 are promising genotypes for a plant breeding program that aims the development of a cultivar with highest leave yielding and anti-edematogenic effect

    Photobiomodulation Therapy in the Proliferation and Differentiation of Human Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cells: An In Vitro Study

    Introduction: Since photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) favors in vitro mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) preconditioning before MSC transplantation, increasing the proliferation of these cells without molecular injuries by conserving their characteristics, in the present in vitro study we analyzed the effect of PBMT on the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUCMSCs).Methods: Irradiation with an InGaAIP Laser (660 nm, 10 mW, 2.5 J/cm2, 0.08 cm2 spot size, and 10 s) was carried out. The cells were divided into four groups: CONTROL [cells grown in Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle Medium (DMEM)], OSTEO (cells grown in an osteogenic medium); PBMT (cells grown in DMEM+PBMT), and OSTEO+PBMT (cells grown in an osteogenic medium-plus PBMT). The cell proliferation curve was obtained over periods of 24, 48 and 72 hours using the 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Osteogenic differentiation was analyzed by the formation of calcium nodules over periods of 7, 14 and 21 days. Morphometric analysis was performed to quantify the total area of nodular calcification.Results: The highest cell proliferation and cell differentiation occurred in the OSTEO+PBMT group, followed by the PBMT, OSTEO, and CONTROL groups respectively, at the observed times (P < 0.05).Conclusion: PBMT enhanced the osteogenic proliferation and the differentiation of hUCMSCs during the periods tested, without causing damage to the cells and preserving their specific characteristics, a fact that may represent an innovative pretreatment in the application of stem cells

    Short-Term Analysis of Human Dental Pulps After Direct Capping with Portland Cement

    This study evaluated the short-term response of human pulp tissue when directly capped with Portland cement. In this series of cases, twenty human third molars that were scheduled for extraction were used. After cavity preparation, pulp exposure was achieved and Portland cement pulp capping was performed. Teeth were extracted after 1, 7, 14 and 21 days following treatment and prepared for histological examination and bacterial detection. Each group had 5 teeth. The results were descriptively analysed. Dentin bridge formation was seen in two teeth with some distance from the material interface (14 and 21 days). Soft inflammatory responses were observed in most of the cases. Bacteria were not disclosed in any specimen. PC exhibited some features of biocompatibility and capability of inducing mineral pulp response in short-term evaluation. The results suggested that PC has a potential to be used as a less expensive pulp capping material in comparison to other pulp capping materials

    Abstract Gastric cancer (GC) is the fifth most common type of cancer worldwide with high incidences in Asia, Central, and South American countries. This patchy distribution means that GC studies are neglected by large research centers from developed countries. The need for further understanding of this complex disease, including the local importance of epidemiological factors and the rich ancestral admixture found in Brazil, stimulated the implementation of the GE4GAC project. GE4GAC aims to embrace epidemiological, clinical, molecular and microbiological data from Brazilian controls and patients with malignant and pre-malignant gastric disease.     Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil: setting the baseline knowledge on the animal diversity in Brazil

    The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others

    Histologic evaluation of pulpotomy performed with ethyl-cyanoacrylate and calcium hydroxide Avaliação histológica de pulpotomia realizada com etil-cianoacrilato e com hidróxido de cálcio

    The aim of this study was to evaluate histological aspects of the pulp-dentin complex of dogs submitted to pulpotomy and capped with ethyl-cyanoacrylate and calcium hydroxide. Thirty dog teeth were divided into 2 groups of 15 as follows: Group 1 - ethyl-cyanoacrylate; Group 2 - calcium hydroxide. The pulpotomies were carried out following all of the treatment precautions recommended for dogs. After 30 days the specimens were submitted to histological preparation and were then blindly evaluated by a histologist. Data were analyzed statistically by the Fisher exact test, comparing the two groups. After 30 days, the presence of a hard tissue barrier was observed in 83.3% of Group 1, and in 100% of Group 2 (p = 0.478). A continuous hard tissue barrier was observed in 50% of the ethyl-cyanoacrylate group and 75% of the calcium hydroxide group (p = 0.652). It can be concluded that both materials induced hard tissue barrier formation, but Group 2 had a higher percentage than Group 1, with no significant statistical differences; the differences observed between the different barriers (continuous/non-continuous) were not significant between groups and there was no pulpal necrosis in either group.O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar o aspecto histológico do complexo dentino-pulpar de cachorros quando capeado após a pulpotomia com etil-cianoacrilato e hidróxido de cálcio. Trinta dentes de cães foram divididos em 2 grupos de 15 da seguinte forma: Grupo 1 - Etil-cianoacrilato; Grupo 2 - Hidróxido de cálcio. A pesquisa foi realizada tomando-se todos os cuidados recomendados para o tratamento com os cães. Após 30 dias do procedimento realizado os espécimes foram submetidos ao preparo histológico e logo após foram avaliados de forma cega por um histologista. Os resultados foram analisados estatisticamente através do Teste Exato de Fisher. No grupo 1, 83,3% e no grupo 2, 100% dos dentes apresentaram a barreira de tecido duro (p = 0,478). A barreira de tecido duro contínua foi observada em 50% dos casos tratados com etil-cianoacrilato e em 75% dos com hidróxido de cálcio (p = 0,652). Pode-se concluir que tanto o grupo 1 como o grupo 2 induziram a formação da barreira de tecido duro, porém o grupo 2 teve um percentual maior do que o grupo 1, não havendo diferença estatisticamente significante; a diferença observada entre as estruturas das barreiras (contínuas e não-contínuas) não foi significante. A necrose pulpar não foi observada em nenhum grupo
