WHO IS AFRAID OF GENDER?: STUDENTS’ RESISTANCE TO CRITICAL LANGUAGE TEACHING IN REACTIONARY TIMES

    Get PDF
This article reports on an action-research conducted by a teacher-researcher with a group of 20 high school students taking the English subject in a federal school in Southern Brazil. Based on the principles of both Task-based language teaching and Critical Pedagogy, critical tasks focusing on gender in the world of work were designed and implemented by the teacher-researcher. Data was collected through students’ questionnaires and interviews, and my self-report diaries. The thematic analysis of the data revealed students’ resistance to the theme approached in the critical tasks. The study points out that students’ opposition to critical reflection seems to be connected to the fact that critical classes deviate from their expectations of what teaching is, since critical teaching moves away from the traditional banking education. A critical understanding of students’ contexts (including the macro sociopolitical scenario) is necessary so that rejection may become resistance towards freedom and social justice

Abstract: This study addresses the problem of hegemonic representation on television. The overall objective is to analyze whether and, if so, how the television series Glee subverts prejudiced or stereotypical representations, specifically of the characters Kurt (the so-called "gayboy") and Finn (the stereotypical "football player"). To this end, I propose a textual analysis of specific episodes from the first season of the show. My purpose is to understand the ways in which the series can be read counter-hegemonically despite its reception by mainstream audiences. The study is conducted in the light of Stuart Hall's concept of cultural identity (1990) towards understanding how these representations deal with the issue of agency as understood by Michel Foucault (1990) and Judith Butler (1993). Based on the analysis of specific episodes, it is possible to note that Glee constantly makes use of a simplistic and resolutionist discourse that embraces and celebrates difference, promoting that idea that "we are all different" and, because of that, "weare all special". At the same time, however, while considering the narrative as a whole, one can identify the ways in which identities are complex, i.e., how different identity categories intersect each other and how they are strongly influenced by different power relations. It is mainly when they perform singing and dancing within the episodes that the characters articulate their reflections on issues of identity, thus developing their agency from within the school repressive system. Moreover, Finn's and Kurt's identities can be understood as being queer to the extent that they defy binary and normative categorizations setting them in a constant process of re-signification. The politics of Glee is a dynamic and impure one, since it is performative of both conservatism and of agential change. While heteronormative and capitalist notions frame the show, non-normative representations of identity also emerge from the narrative

Currently, the subtribe Calothecinae includes three genera, Chascolytrum s.l., Laegaardia and Paramochloa, of which Chascolytrum is the most diverse. The genus Chascolytrum s.l. has a complex and controversial taxonomic background due to several circumscriptions proposed in the past. As now cirscumscribed, the genus includes 22 species that were previously recognized in nine different genera (Chascolytrum, Briza, Poidium, Calotheca, Microbriza, Gymnachne, Rhombolytrum, Lombardochloa e Erianthecium). However, the internal relationships of Chascolytrum s.l. remain poorly resolved due to lack of phylogenetic resolution found in previous studies. The present thesis includes DNA sequences, morphological data and a comprehensive taxon sampling to resolve the generic circumscription of Calothecinae, mainly of those genera included as synonymy of Chascolytrum s.l. The phylogenetic analyses supported, at first, Chascolytrum s.l. as monophyletic and allowed the recognition of eight sections, of which three are newly described. Besides, a new species of Chascolytrum sect. Hildaea was first described (C. serranum). Thereafter, phylogenetic analyses including a broader sampling and more molecular markers revealed that both Calothecinae and Chascolytrum s.l. are polyphyletic, due to the inclusion of Trisetum brasiliense and T. bulbosum in the Chascolytrum s.l. clade. As a result, Chascolytrum s.l. was split in nine different genera of which two are newly described, and Laegaardia and Paramochloa were transferred to the new subtribe Paramochloinae. Trisetum brasiliense and T. bulbosum were formally included in Calothecinae, although as incertae sedis. Further studies to resolve their taxonomic placement are still needed

Mestrado de dupla diplomação com a UTFPR - Universidade Tecnológica Federal do ParanåThe electrical energy is a contemporaneous paradigm, the demand for electrical energy is evergrowing, and so is the energy supply; By bringing the energy production closer to the end-users, either in urban centers or people in remote areas have a chance to exploit renewable energy resources to produce electrical energy, and become self-sufficient. Hydropower has since long been a reliable power source, as well as being the most cost-effective. Although, it has its issues, e.g., its synchronization to the utility grid depends on the continuous operation mode of the generator. Commercially available low-power inverters, up to 1.5 kW, are designed to be applied in either solar power generation, or wind power generation. These inverters were not designed to be used with hydropower generation. This work evaluates two current-controlled power interface solutions, boost and CŽ uk converters, to make a hydropower generator and a commercial photovoltaic inverter compatible. The models, simulations and tests of the proposed power structures along with a commercial photovoltaic inverter emulation are made with MatlabŸ SimulinkŸ, facilitating the evaluation of the power structure and its controller in a discrete-time domain in a Simulation-in-the-Loop environment, as well as, an implementation using a Real-Time controller board from dSPACE interfacing between the power structure and the controller built-in SimulinkŸ in a Hardwarein- the-Loop test platform with Commercial Phtovoltaic Inverter (CPVI), which allows for rapid prototyping, data acquisition and processing and experimental validation of the proposed solutions

_______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThis study aims to investigate the relation of the bioethical challenges of health professionals and officials from the adolescent with cancer. The bioethical reflection is, in theory, the understanding of three pillars: reception, care and autonomy (age health). The method used was qualitative, seeking to understand the phenomenon of this relationship in depth, not just listening to the participants, but organizing these words in different categories to be analyzed. We interviewed five teenagers affected by cancer, those responsible for them, and five members of the healthcare team, namely: a psychologist, a nurse and three physicians. It was observed that autonomy is understood by managers and by the health team, but is not strictly respected before the wishes listed by adolescents. It was found, also, the majority of health aceitamento not as a possibility for action, but only as a point of reflection, especially when the subject is in palliative care. Thus, the range became central point, from the host to be generator care. This point was understood in bioethical three central questions: (a) the possibility that the teen to make choices throughout the treatment, since simple choices like what to eat the most difficult choices as the refusal to be satisfied by certain professional or the experience of some procedures, (b) the autoacompanhamento the adolescents themselves, seeking to learn about what is happening or not and how these issues can influence your life in the formation of this new subjectivity, (c) the ability to refuse treatment, the question elencada health team as a legal impossibility, but that could be understood by bioethics and ethical reflection of the existing law (Civil Code). To this end, the understanding of health would occur in the majority bioethical reflection

Assim, a produção avança, apesar dos temores da extinção da cultura no Brasil.--------------------------------------------The agro industrial chain of tobacco placed in south of Brazil is formed for two different groups. For one side, hundred of thousand small farmers and, for the other one, an industry composed for an oligopoly with multinational capital. The chain produces tobacco to be transformed in cigarettes. The main market is the external. The Brazil has the worldwide leadership in this business. However a new situation is post: the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC), a signed document for more than hundred countries, including Brazil. The aimed is to reduce the production of this leaf around the world. The reaction of the agents of the chain has been distinct. For the small farms side, institutions like Associação dos Fumicultores do Brasil (AFUBRA) shows preoccupation about reduction of plant areas. For the industry side, there is tranquility before the risk of that reduction. So, the production goes on, in spite of fear of the end of this activity.cadeia agroindustrial, fumos claros, sul do Brasil, convenção-quadro, agro industrial chain, tobacco to cigarette, south of Brazil, Framework Convention, Agribusiness, Crop Production/Industries,

A Survey of Adaptive Resonance Theory Neural Network Models for Engineering Applications

This survey samples from the ever-growing family of adaptive resonance theory (ART) neural network models used to perform the three primary machine learning modalities, namely, unsupervised, supervised and reinforcement learning. It comprises a representative list from classic to modern ART models, thereby painting a general picture of the architectures developed by researchers over the past 30 years. The learning dynamics of these ART models are briefly described, and their distinctive characteristics such as code representation, long-term memory and corresponding geometric interpretation are discussed. Useful engineering properties of ART (speed, configurability, explainability, parallelization and hardware implementation) are examined along with current challenges. Finally, a compilation of online software libraries is provided. It is expected that this overview will be helpful to new and seasoned ART researchers

    Neuroengineering of Clustering Algorithms

Cluster analysis can be broadly divided into multivariate data visualization, clustering algorithms, and cluster validation. This dissertation contributes neural network-based techniques to perform all three unsupervised learning tasks. Particularly, the first paper provides a comprehensive review on adaptive resonance theory (ART) models for engineering applications and provides context for the four subsequent papers. These papers are devoted to enhancements of ART-based clustering algorithms from (a) a practical perspective by exploiting the visual assessment of cluster tendency (VAT) sorting algorithm as a preprocessor for ART offline training, thus mitigating ordering effects; and (b) an engineering perspective by designing a family of multi-criteria ART models: dual vigilance fuzzy ART and distributed dual vigilance fuzzy ART (both of which are capable of detecting complex cluster structures), merge ART (aggregates partitions and lessens ordering effects in online learning), and cluster validity index vigilance in fuzzy ART (features a robust vigilance parameter selection and alleviates ordering effects in offline learning). The sixth paper consists of enhancements to data visualization using self-organizing maps (SOMs) by depicting in the reduced dimension and topology-preserving SOM grid information-theoretic similarity measures between neighboring neurons. This visualization\u27s parameters are estimated using samples selected via a single-linkage procedure, thereby generating heatmaps that portray more homogeneous within-cluster similarities and crisper between-cluster boundaries. The seventh paper presents incremental cluster validity indices (iCVIs) realized by (a) incorporating existing formulations of online computations for clusters\u27 descriptors, or (b) modifying an existing ART-based model and incrementally updating local density counts between prototypes. Moreover, this last paper provides the first comprehensive comparison of iCVIs in the computational intelligence literature --Abstract, page iv
