Environmental and energy performance of residual forest biomass for electricity generation: gasification vs. combustion
Bioenergy systems have a great potential worldwide to substitute fossil fuels mainly because they may contribute to greenhouse gas emissions reduction. In Portugal, several biomass combustion-based power plants have been built in the last decade. Biomass gasification is a potential alternative to combustion but its environmental impacts should be evaluated. The goal of this study is to assess and compare the environmental and energy performance of direct gasification and combustion (both in fluidized bed) using residual forest biomass (RFB) from eucalypt in Portugal. In order to achieve the goal, life cycle assessment was applied, complemented with the Energy-Returned-On-Energy-Invested (EROI) indicator. The boundaries of the systems comprise three stages: (1) forest management, (2) collection, processing and transportation, and (3) electricity generation. The results indicate that gasification performs environmentally better than combustion in 5 out of 8 impact categories addressed. Conversely, combustion has greater EROI than gasification. After running a sensitivity analysis where the efficiency of the gasifier was changed from 53% in the base scenario to 57%, it is shown that the environmental performance of gasification improved in the range of 2–8%. Preserved functional autonomic phenotype in adult mice overexpressing moderate levels of human alpha-synuclein in oligodendrocytes
Mice overexpressing human alpha-synuclein in oligodendrocytes (MBP1-alpha-syn) recapitulate some key functional and neuropathological features of multiple system atrophy (MSA). Whether or not these mice develop severe autonomic failure, which is a key feature of human MSA, remains unknown. We explored cardiovascular autonomic regulation using long-term blood pressure (BP) radiotelemetry and pharmacological testing. We instrumented 12 MBP1-alpha-syn mice and 11 wild-type mice aged 9 months for radiotelemetry. Animals were tested with atropine, metoprolol, clonidine, and trimethaphan at 9 and 12 months age. We applied spectral and cross-spectral analysis to assess heart rate (HR) and BP variability. At 9 months of age daytime BP (transgenic: 101 +/- 2 vs. wild type: 99 +/- 2 mmHg) and HR (497 +/- 11 vs. 505 +/- 16 beats/min) were similar. Circadian BP and HR rhythms were maintained. Nighttime BP (109 +/- 2 vs. 108 +/- 2 mmHg) and HR (575 +/- 15 vs. 569 +/- 14 beats/min), mean arterial BP responses to trimethaphan (-21 +/- 8 vs. -10 +/- 5 mmHg, P = 0.240) and to clonidine (-8 +/- 3 vs. -5 +/- 2 mmHg, P = 0.314) were similar. HR responses to atropine (+159 +/- 24 vs. +146 +/- 22 beats/min), and to clonidine (-188 +/- 21 vs. -163 +/- 33 beats/min) did not differ between strains. Baroreflex sensitivity (4 +/- 1 vs. 4 +/- 1 msec/mmHg) and HR variability (total power, 84 +/- 17 vs. 65 +/- 21 msec(2)) were similar under resting conditions and during pharmacological testing. Repeated measurements at 12 months of age provided similar results. In mice, moderate overexpression of human alpha-synuclein in oligodendrocytes is not sufficient to induce overt autonomic failure. Additional mechanisms may be required to express the autonomic failure phenotype including higher levels of expression or more advanced age
Geochemistry, mineralogy, solid-phase fractionation and oral bioaccessibility of lead in urban soils of Lisbon
An urban survey of Lisbon, the largest city in Portugal, was carried out to investigate its environmental burden, emphasizing metallic elements and their public health impacts. This paper examines the geochemistry of lead (Pb) and its influence on human health data. A total of 51 soil samples were collected from urban recreational areas used by children to play outdoors. The semi-quantitative analysis of Pb was carried out by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry after an acid digestion. X-ray diffraction was used to characterize the soil mineralogy. The solid-phase distribution of Pb in the urban soils was investigated on a subset of 7 soils, out of a total of 51 samples, using a non-specific sequential extraction method coupled with chemometric analysis. Oral bioaccessibility measurements were obtained using the Unified BARGE Method developed by the Bioaccessibility Research Group of Europe. The objectives of the study are as follows: (1) investigation of Pb solid-phase distribution; (2) interpretation of Pb oral bioaccessibility measurements; (3) integration of metal geochemistry with human health data; and (4) understanding the influence of geochemistry and mineralogy on oral bioaccessibility. The results show that the bioaccessible fraction of Pb is lower when major metal fractions are associated with less soluble soil phases such as Fe oxyhydroxides, and more increased when the metal is in the highly soluble carbonate phase. However, there is some evidence that the proportion of carbonates in the soil environment is also a key control over the oral bioaccessibility of Pb, irrespective of its solid-phase fractionation
Modelos acoplados do IPCC-AR4 e o gradiente meridional de temperatua da superficie do mar no atlântico tropical : relaçoes com a precipitaçao no norte do nordeste do Brasil
Este artigo mostra como trĂŞs modelos acoplados do Intergovernmental on Panel Climate Change - (IPCC-AR4), o FGOALS1. 0G – LASG do Institute of Atmospheric Physics of China, o GISSER da National Aeronautics Space Admnistration (NASA) e o GFDL_CM2 da National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), simularam a variabilidade do gradiente meridional de Temperatura da SuperfĂcie do Mar (TSM), entre os meses de fevereiro a maio, no Atlântico Tropical (1901-1999). A precipitação durante a estação chuvosa (fevereiro a maio) no setor norte do Nordeste do Brasil (NEB) foi tambĂ©m analisada pelos trĂŞs modelos e comparada com as observações. Os modelos GISSER e FGOALS1.0G mostraram melhor desempenho na simulação do sinal do gradiente meridional de TSM no Atlântico Tropical para o perĂodo de 1901 a 1999. Destaca-se que os modelos apresentaram um melhor desempenho na simulação da tendĂŞncia decadal, conseguindo explicar entre 50% a 80% da variabilidade do gradiente, com a TSM do setor sul sendo mais bem simulada
Nuclear obscuration in the high-ionization Seyfert 2 galaxy Tol 0109-383
We report the BeppoSAX detection of a hard X-ray excess in the X-ray spectrum
of the classical high-ionization Seyfert 2 galaxy Tol0109-383. The X-ray
emission of this source observed below 7 keV is dominated by reflection from
both cold and ionized gas, as seen in the ASCA data. The excess hard X-ray
emission is presumably due to the central source absorbed by an optically thick
obscuring torus with N(H)~2e24 cm-2. The strong cold X-ray reflection, if it is
produced at the inner surface of the torus, is consistent with the picture
where much of the inner nucleus of Tol0109-383 is exposed to direct view, as
indicated by optical and infrared properties. However, the X-ray absorption
must occur at small radii in order to hide the central X-ray source but leave
the optical high-ionization emission line region unobscured. This may also be
