    Conservation Conundrum: At-risk Bumble Bees (Bombus spp.) Show Preference for Invasive Tufted Vetch (Vicia cracca) While Foraging in Protected Areas

    In recent decades, some bumble bee species have declined, including in North America. Declines have been reported in species of bumble bees historically present in Ontario, including: yellow bumble bee (Bombus fervidus) (Fabricus, 1798), American bumble bee (Bombus pensylvanicus) (DeGeer, 1773), and yellow-banded bumble bee (Bombus terricola) (Kirby, 1837). Threats contributing to bumble bee population declines include: land-use changes, habitat loss, climate change, pathogen spillover, and pesticide use. A response to the need for action on pollinator preservation in North America has been to encourage ‘bee-friendly’ plantings. Previous studies show differences in common and at-risk bumble bee foraging; however, similar data are unavailable for Ontario. Our research question is whether there is a difference in co-occurring at-risk and common bumble bee (Bombus spp.) floral use (including nectar and pollen collection) in protected areas in southern Ontario. We hypothesize that common and at-risk species forage differently, predicting that at-risk species forage on a limited selection of host plants. We conducted a field survey of sites in southern Ontario, using observational methods to determine bumble bee foraging by species. The results of a redundancy analysis show a difference in foraging between common and at-risk bumblebee species. At-risk bumble bee species show a preference for foraging on invasive, naturalized Vicia cracca (tufted vetch). This finding raises the question of how to preserve or provide forage for at-risk bumble bees, when they show an association with an invasive species often subject to control in protected areas.York University Librarie

    Neural network based prediction of roughing and finishing times in a hot strip mill

    The paper presents a model based on neural networks which is able to predict the time required to pass the different gauges of a roughing and finishing mill as function of some slab features and process parameters. The final aim of the work is to increase the rolling efficiency while avoiding collisions and queues that cause time and energy losses. Neural networks are suitable to this prediction task as they are particularly able to cope with unknown non linear relationships between input and output variables. Moreover they can learn from real industrial data and therefore do not require prior assumptions or mathematical modelling of the process and transferability is ensured by the possibility to use different databases coming from different rolling mills. In the paper, two different kinds of neural network- based models have been proposed, their performances have been discussed and compared.En este artículo se presenta un modelo basado en redes neuronales capaz de predecir el tiempo necesario para pasar las diferentes galgas de un tren desbastador y acabador en función de ciertas características del desbaste y parámetros de proceso. El objetivo final es aumentar la eficacia de la laminación evitando colisiones y colas que provoquen pérdidas de tiempo y energía. Se propone utilizar para esta tarea redes neuronales por su capacidad de predicción en aquellos casos en los que existen relaciones no lineales desconocidas entre las variables de entrada y las de salida.     Can green roofs provide habitat for urban bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae)?

    Increasing urbanization of many regions of the world has resulted in the decline of suitable habitat for wild flora and fauna. Green roofs have been suggested as a potential avenue to provide patches of good-quality habitat in highly developed regions. In this study, we surveyed green roofs in Toronto, Ontario, Canada for bee diversity and abundance to determine their potential as quality habitats in an urban area for these important pollinators. By comparing various biodiversity measures between green roofs and ground-level sites, we show that green roofs provide habitat to many bee species. Implications for pollinator conservation and urban agricultural production are discussed

    Thermodynamic and dynamic anomalies for a three dimensional isotropic core-softened potential

    Using molecular dynamics simulations and integral equations (Rogers-Young, Percus-Yevick and hypernetted chain closures) we investigate the thermodynamic of particles interacting with continuous core-softened intermolecular potential. Dynamic properties are also analyzed by the simulations. We show that, for a chosen shape of the potential, the density, at constant pressure, has a maximum for a certain temperature. The line of temperatures of maximum density (TMD) was determined in the pressure-temperature phase diagram. Similarly the diffusion constant at a constant temperature, DD, has a maximum at a density ρmax\rho_{max} and a minimum at a density ρmin<ρmax\rho_{min}<\rho_{max}. In the pressure-temperature phase-diagram the line of extrema in diffusivity is outside of TMD line. Although in this interparticle potential lacks directionality, this is the same behavior observed in SPC/E water.Comment: 16 page

    Equation of state of charged colloidal suspensions and its dependence on the thermodynamic route

    The thermodynamic properties of highly charged colloidal suspensions in contact with a salt reservoir are investigated in the framework of the Renormalized Jellium Model (RJM). It is found that the equation of state is very sensitive to the particular thermodynamic route used to obtain it. Specifically, the osmotic pressure calculated within the RJM using the contact value theorem can be very different from the pressure calculated using the Kirkwood-Buff fluctuation relations. On the other hand, Monte Carlo (MC) simulations show that both the effective pair potentials and the correlation functions are accurately predicted by the RJM. It is suggested that the lack of self-consistency in the thermodynamics of the RJM is a result of neglected electrostatic correlations between the counterions and coions

    The two sided parsec scale structure of the Low Luminosity Active Galactic Nucleus in NGC 4278

    We present new Very Long Baseline Interferometry observations of the LINER galaxy NGC 4278. The observations were taken with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) and a single antenna of the Very Large Array (VLA) at 5 GHz and 8.4 GHz and have a linear resolution of <0.1 pc. Our radio data reveal a two sided structure, with symmetric S-shaped jets emerging from a flat spectrum core. We fit the jet brightness with gaussian components, which we identify from a previous observation taken five years before. By comparing the positions of the components in the two epochs, we measure motions between 0.45 +/- 0.14 and 3.76 +/- 0.65 mas, corresponding to apparent velocities < 0.2c, and to ages in the range 8.3 - 65.8 years. Assuming that the radio morphology is intrinsically symmetric and its appearance is governed by Doppler beaming effects, we find that NGC4278 has mildly relativistic jets (beta ~ 0.75), closely aligned to the line-of-sight (2 degrees < theta < 4 degrees). Alternatively, the source could be oriented at a larger angle and asymmetries could be related to the jet interaction with the surrounding medium. We also present new simultaneous VLA observations between 1.4 and 43 GHz, and a 5 GHz light curve between 1972 and 2003. The radio spectrum can be fit by a relatively steep power-law (alpha = 0.54). We find significant variability at 5 GHz. All these arguments indicate that the radiation from NGC 4278 is emitted via the synchrotron process by relativistic particles accelerated by a supermassive black hole. The morphological, spectral and polarization properties of this peculiar object are studied at different levels of spatial resolutions.     By analogy to the different accretion states observed in black-hole X-ray binaries (BHXBs), it appears plausible that accretion disks in active galactic nuclei (AGN) undergo a state transition between a radiatively efficient and inefficient accretion flow. If the radiative efficiency changes at some critical accretion rate, there will be a change in the distribution of black hole masses and bolometric luminosities at the corresponding transition luminosity. To test this prediction, I consider the joint distribution of AGN black hole masses and bolometric luminosities for a sample taken from the literature. The small number of objects with low Eddington-scaled accretion rates mdot < 0.01 and black hole masses Mbh < 10^9 Msun constitutes tentative evidence for the existence of such a transition in AGN. Selection effects, in particular those associated with flux-limited samples, systematically exclude objects in particular regions of the black hole mass-luminosity plane. Therefore, they require particular attention in the analysis of distributions of black hole mass, bolometric luminosity, and derived quantities like the accretion rate. I suggest further observational tests of the BHXB-AGN unification scheme which are based on the jet domination of the energy output of BHXBs in the hard state, and on the possible equivalence of BHXB in the very high (or "steep power-law") state showing ejections and efficiently accreting quasars and radio galaxies with powerful radio jets.Comment: Accepted by ApJ; 14 pages, 4 figures, uses emulateap

    Obscuration and Origin of Nuclear X-ray emission in FR I Radio Galaxies

    We present X-ray observations of the nuclear region of 25 Fanaroff-Riley I radio galaxies from the 3CRR and B2 catalogs, using data from the Chandra and XMM archives. We find the presence of a X-ray Central Compact Core (CCCX) in 13/25 sources, in 3/25 sources the detection of a CCCX is uncertain, while in the remaining 9/25 sources no CCCX is found. All the sources are embedded in a diffuse soft X-ray component, generally on kpc-scales, which is in agreement with the halo of the host galaxy and/or with the intracluster medium. The X-ray spectra of the cores are described by a power law with photon indices Gamma=1.1 - 2.6. In 8 sources excess absorption over the Galactic value is detected, with rest-frame column densities N_H^z ~ 10^20 - 10^21 cm^-2; thus, we confirm the previous claim based on optical data that most FRI radio galaxies lack a standard optically-thick torus. We find significant correlations between the X-ray core luminosity and the radio and optical luminosities, suggesting that at least a fraction of the X-ray emission originates in a jet; however, the origin of the X-rays remains ambiguous. If the X-ray emission is entirely attributed to an isotropic, accretion-related component, we find very small Eddington ratios, L_bol/L_Edd ~ 10^-3 - 10^-8, and we calculate the radiative efficiency to be eta ~ 10^-2 - 10^-6, based on the Bondi accretion rates from the spatial analysis.     The lives of FR I radio galaxies

    After a brief introduction to the morphological properties of FRI radio sources, we discuss the possibility that FRI jets are relativistic at their bases and decelerate quickly to non-relativistic velocities. From two-frequency data we determine spectral index distributions and consequently the ages of FRI sources. We show that in the large majority of cases synchrotron theory provides unambiguous and plausible answers; in a few objects re-acceleration of electrons may be needed. The derived ages are of the order 10^7-10^8 years, 2-4 times larger than the ages inferred from dynamical arguments and a factor 5-10 larger than the ages of FRII sources. The linear sizes of FRI and FRII sources make it unlikely that many FRII's evolve into FRI's.
