A partition‑based branch‑and‑bound algorithm for the project duration problem with partially renewable resources and general temporal constraints
The concept of partially renewable resources provides a general modeling framework that can be used for a wide range of different real-life applications. In this paper, we consider a resource-constrained project duration problem with partially renewable resources, where the temporal constraints between the activities are given by minimum and maximum time lags. We present a new branch-and-bound algorithm for this problem, which is based on a stepwise decomposition of the possible resource consumptions by the activities of the project. It is shown that the new approach results in a polynomially bounded depth of the enumeration tree, which is obtained by kind of a binary search. In a comprehensive experimental performance analysis, we compare our exact solution procedure with all branch-and-bound algorithms and state-of-the-art heuristics from the literature on different benchmark sets. The results of the performance study reveal that our branch-and-bound algorithm clearly outperforms all exact solution procedures. Furthermore, it is shown that our
new approach dominates the state-of-the-art heuristics on well known benchmark instances
A long-term unit commitment problem with hydrothermal coordination for economic and emission control in large-scale electricity systems
The paper describes a long-term scheduling problem for thermal power plants and energy storages. In addition, renewable energy sources are integrated by considering the residual demand. Besides the classical minimization of the production costs, emission-related costs are taken into account. Thereby, emission costs are determined by market prices for CO2 emission certificates (i.e., using the EU emissions trading system). For the proposed unit commitment problem with hydrothermal coordination for economic and emission control, an enhanced mixed-integer linear programming model is presented. Moreover, a new heuristic approach is developed, which consists of two solution stages. The heuristic first performs an isolated dispatching of thermal plants. Then, a re-optimization stage is included in order to embed activities of energy storages into the final solution schedule. The considered approach is able to find outstanding schedules for benchmark instances with a planning horizon of up to one year. Furthermore, promising results are also obtained for large-scale real-world electricity systems. For the German electricity market, the relationship of CO2 certificate prices and the optimal thermal dispatch is illustrated by a comprehensive sensitivity analysis
Solution procedures for block selection and sequencing in flat-bedded potash underground mines
Phosphates, and especially potash, play an essential role in the increase in crop yields. Potash is mined in Germany in underground mines using a conventional
drill-and-blast technique. The most commercially valuable mineral contained in potash is the potassium chloride that is separated from the potash in aboveground processing plants. The processing plants perform economically best if the amount of potassium contained in the output is equal to a specific value, the so-called optimal operating point. Therefore, quality-oriented extraction plays a decisive role in reducing processing costs. In this paper, we mathematically formulate a block selection and sequencing problem with a quality-oriented objective function that aims at an even extraction of potash regarding the potassium content. We, thereby, have to observe some precedence relations, maximum and minimum limits of the output, and a quality tolerance range within a given planning horizon. We model the problem as a mixed-integer nonlinear program which is then linearized. We show
that our problem is NP-hard in the strong sense with the result that a MILP-solver cannot find feasible solutions for the most challenging problem instances at hand. Accordingly, we develop a problem-specific constructive heuristic that finds feasible solutions for each of our test instances. A comprehensive experimental performance analysis shows that a sophisticated combination of the proposed heuristic with the mathematical program improves the feasible solutions achieved by the heuristic, on average, by 92.5%

References 102The protein VASP is important for the regulation of actin dynamics. It
prevents the inhibition of filament growth (capping). This process is
important for shape changes and migration of cells. VASP is also involved in
infections with the pathogenic bacterium Listeria monocytogenes and is
recruited to the bacteriums surface. This allows Listeria to polymerise actin
filaments and propel itself through the cell. The interaction of VASP is
mediated by the surface protein ActA, which contains the amino acid sequence
motif SFEFPPPPTEDEL. VASP does not contain a catalytic subunit but rather is
involved in several protein protein interactions. They are mediated by the
N-terminal EVH1 domain, a central proline rich region and an F-actin binding
domain. VASP oligomerises via its C-terminal coiled coil domain. It was the
main goal of this work to gain a detailed understanding of factors influencing
the function of VASP and develop means to influence this function. The focus
lay on investigating the EVH1 domain, competitive inhibitors containing
nonnatural amino acids were developed. These allow for an extension of
structural motifs compared to natural amino acids and are less prone to
proteolytic digestion in vivo. The interaction of VASP with proline rich
motifs is mediated by its EVH1 domain. It binds sequences containing the
sequence motif FPxfP. It is not possible to substitute the two proline
residues with any other natural amnio acid. The only substitution leading to a
ligand of higher affinity is SFEWPPPPTEDEL. In this work new ligands based on
peptoidic building blocks were developed for the VASP EVH1 domain. These
building blocks are derived from the rare amino acid sarcosin, bearing two
hydrogen atoms on Ca and a sidechain on the nitrogen atom. Starting from the
peptide SFEFPPPPTEDEL a new ligand was developed by screening and model
supported structure optimization, in which the first proline residue as well
as the preceeding Phe residue were substituted. The peptomer SFEAXPPPPTEDEL
(X: peptoid building block) has a lower affinity compared to the starting
ligand, but proves the validity of this method in the development of EVH1
ligands. For a better understanding of the structure-function-relationship of
EVH1 domains the investigation of homologous proteins is very useful.
Therefore the structure of the sequence homologous EVH1 domain from the human
Spred2 protein was determined. The structure confirmed the sequence based
assumption that this is indeed an EVH1 domain. A comparison of the putative
binding site to that of other EVH1 domains shows considerable differences and
hints at a different ligand specificity. An interaction partner for the Spred2
EVH1 domain has not been identified in the literature so far. The affinity of
EVH1 domains to their binding partners is low, hence the oligomerization of
VASP plays a central role in increasing interactions with target proteins.
Hence the C-terminal coiled coil EVH2 domain of VASP was investigated as a
modulating factor of VASP function. Combining analytical ultracentrifugation
and NMR spectroscopy it has been possible to show that this domain forms a
parallel tetramer over a broad concentartion range (0.0625 - 5.0 mM). Insight
into this arrangement is crucial in developing models of VASP fucntion and
interaction within protein networks. Due to the high degree of symmetry of the
coiled coil domain is was not possible to determine the complete tetramer
structure by NMR so far. Based on NOESY data and residual dipolar couplings a
model of a monomer has been calculated. This model is in reasonable agreement
with the recently solved crystal structure.
pathogenen Bakterium Listeria monocytogenes an dessen Oberfläche rekrutiert.
Anisotropy of spin relaxation and transverse transport in metals
Using first principles methods we explore the anisotropy of the spin
relaxation and transverse transport properties in bulk metals with respect to
the direction of the spin quantization axis in paramagnets or of the
spontaneous magnetization in ferromagnets. Owing to the presence of the
spin-orbit interaction the orbital and spin character of the Bloch states
depends sensitively on the orientation of the spins relative to the crystal
axes. This leads to drastic changes in quantities which rely on interband
mixing induced by the spin-orbit interaction. The anisotropy is particularly
striking for quantities which exhibit spiky and irregular distribution in the
Brillouin zone, such as the spin-mixing parameter or the Berry curvature of the
electronic states. We demonstrate this for three cases: (i) the Elliott-Yafet
spin-relaxation mechanism in paramagnets with structural inversion symmetry;
(ii) the intrinsic anomalous Hall effect in ferromagnets; and (iii) the spin
Hall effect in paramagnets. We discuss the consequences of the pronounced
anisotropic behavior displayed by these properties for spin-polarized transport
applications.Comment: Psi-k Highlight 111 (2012
Magnetic switching modes for exchange spring systems ErFe2/YFe2/DyFe2/YFe2 with competing anisotropies
The magnetization reversal processes of ½10nm ErFe2=nYFe2=4nm DyFe2=nYFe2" multilayer films with
a (110) growth axis and a variable YFe2 layer thickness n are investigated. The magnetically soft YFe2
compound acts as a separator between the hard rare earth (RE) ErFe2 and DyFe2 compounds, each of
them bearing different temperature dependent magnetic anisotropy properties. Magnetic measurements
of a system with n ¼ 20nm reveal the existence of three switching modes: an independent
switching mode at low temperatures, an ErFe2 spin flop switching mode at medium high temperatures,
and an YFe2 dominated switching mode at high temperatures. The measurements are in qualitative
agreement with the findings of micromagnetic simulations which are used to illustrate the switching
modes. Further simulations for a varied YFe2 layer thickness n ranging from 2 to 40nm are carried out.
Quantitative criteria are defined to classify the reversal behavior, and the resultant switching modes are
laid out in a map with regard to n and the temperature T. A new coupled switching mode emerges above
a threshold temperature for samples with thin YFe2 separation layers as a consequence of the exchange
coupling between the magnetically hard ErFe2 and DyFe2 layers. It reflects the increasing competition of
the two conflicting anisotropies to dominate the magnetic switching states of both RE compounds
under decreasing n
