    System optimization of an all-silicon IQ modulator : achieving 100 Gbaud dual polarization 32QAM

    We experimentally demonstrate the highest, to the best of our knowledge, reported net rate in a SiP IQ modulator. At 100 Gbaud 32QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation), and assuming 20% FEC (forward error correction) overhead, we achieved a dual polarization net rate of 833 Gb/s. This record was achieved by adapting digital signal processing to the challenging pattern dependent distortion encountered in the nonlinear and bandwidth limited regime. First the Mach Zehnder modulator (MZM) operating point (trading off modulation efficiency and 3 dB bandwidth) and linear compensation (electrical and optical) are jointly optimized. Next, the key application of nonlinear preand post-compensation are explored. We show that nonlinear processing at the transmitter, in our case an iterative learning control (ILC) method, is essential as post-processing alone could not achieve reliable communications at 100 Gbaud. Nonlinear post-compensation algorithms pushed the performance under the FEC threshold with the introduction of structured intersymbol interference in post processing and a simple one-step maximum likelihood sequence detector.     Genetic tool development in marine protists: emerging model organisms for experimental cell biology

    Abstract: Diverse microbial ecosystems underpin life in the sea. Among these microbes are many unicellular eukaryotes that span the diversity of the eukaryotic tree of life. However, genetic tractability has been limited to a few species, which do not represent eukaryotic diversity or environmentally relevant taxa. Here, we report on the development of genetic tools in a range of protists primarily from marine environments. We present evidence for foreign DNA delivery and expression in 13 species never before transformed and for advancement of tools for eight other species, as well as potential reasons for why transformation of yet another 17 species tested was not achieved. Our resource in genetic manipulation will provide insights into the ancestral eukaryotic lifeforms, general eukaryote cell biology, protein diversification and the evolution of cellular pathways

    In this paper, the electromagnetic pulse due to a delta-function current excitation has been derived on the planar surface of a perfect conductor coated by a dielectric layer. The approximate expression of wave component is obtained when both the transmitting source and the receiving antennas are located on the surface of the dielectric. When the thickness of the intermediate layer is subjected to the condition of k1l<<0.6, this physical model is applied to the microstrip circuit. Analysis and computations of the wave components are carried out on the microstrip circuit, including the surface trapped wave vector which had been ignored in former studies. It is shown that the trapped-surface-wave terms should have been taken into consideration as the main contribution in total transient field in the far-field radiations

    Population dynamics of Meloidogyne graminicola in soil in different types of direct-seeded rice agroecosystems in Hunan Province, China

    The rice root-knot nematode Meloidogyne graminicola is increasingly widely distributed in China and has had a severe incidence in Hunan Province. It is thus necessary to investigate its population dynamics in paddy fields. This study was conducted to ascertain the effect of direct-seeded rice agroecosystems on the population dynamics of M. graminicola and root gall development in rice. The results indicated that the population density of M. graminicola in soil was markedly influenced by the agroecosystem, rainfall and temperature. The population density of M. graminicola J2, and eggs in the soil and root galls, were significantly larger in the dry aerobic rice agroecosystem and in the rain-fed upland agroecosystem than in the lowland double-rice cropping sequence agroecosystem. As it can affect soil moisture rainfall was the key factor affecting the density of nematodes in both the rain-fed upland agroecosystem and the dry aerobic rice agroecosystem. Field flooding was still an effective way to reduce the population density of M. graminicola. In addition, we observed that M. graminicola can lay eggs outside rice roots under laboratory conditions. Therefore, we propose a hypothesis that M. graminicola lays egg masses within roots when the soil moisture is high, but lays eggs outside when the soil moisture is suitable. By clarifying the population dynamics of M. graminicola in different types of direct-seeded rice agroecosystems, this study is conducive to controlling rice root-knot nematodes
