    Calcium transport in gill cells of Ucides cordatus, a mangrove crab living in variable salinity environments

    Crustaceans show discontinuous growth and have been used as a model system for studying cellular mechanisms of calcium transport, which is the main mineral found in their exoskeleton. Ucides cordatus, a mangrove crab, is naturally exposed to fluctuations in calcium and salinity. To study calcium transport in this species during isosmotic conditions, dissociated gill cells were marked with fluo-3 and intracellular Ca2+ change was followed by adding extracellular Ca2+ as CaCl2 (0, 0.1, 0.25, 0.50, 1.0 and 5 mM), together with different inhibitors. for control gill cells, Ca2+ transport followed Michaelis-Menten kinetics with V-max = 0.137 +/- 0.001 Delta Ca(2+)i (mu M x 22.10(4) cells(-1) x 180 s(-1); N = 4; r(2) = 0.99); K-m = 0.989 +/- 0.027 mM. the use of different inhibitors for gill cells showed that amiloride (Na+/Ca2+ exchange inhibitor) inhibited 80% of Ca2+ transport in gill cells (V-max). KB-R, an inhibitor of Ca influx in vertebrates, similarly caused a decrease in Ca2+ transport and verapamil (Ca2+ channel inhibitor) had no effect on Ca2+ transport, while nifedipine (another Ca2+ channel inhibitor) caused a 20% decrease in Ca2+ affinity compared to control values. Ouabain, on the other hand, caused no change in Ca2+ transport while vanadate increased the concentration of intracellular calcium through inhibition of Ca2+ efflux probably through the plasma membrane Ca2+-ATPase. Results show that transport kinetics for Ca2+ in these crabs under isosmotic conditions is lower compared to a hyper-regulator freshwater crab Dilocarcinus pagei studied earlier using fluorescent Ca2+ probes. These kinds of studies will help understanding the comparative mechanisms underlying the evolution of Ca transport in crabs living in different environments. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc.     The influence of risk perception in epidemics: a cellular agent model

    Our work stems from the consideration that the spreading of a disease is modulated by the individual's perception of the infected neighborhood and his/her strategy to avoid being infected as well. We introduced a general ``cellular agent'' model that accounts for a hetereogeneous and variable network of connections. The probability of infection is assumed to depend on the perception that an individual has about the spreading of the disease in her local neighborhood and on broadcasting media. In the one-dimensional homogeneous case the model reduces to the DK one, while for long-range coupling the dynamics exhibits large fluctuations that may lead to the complete extinction of the disease

    High frequency mechanical excitation of a silicon nanostring with piezoelectric aluminum nitride layers

    A strong trend for quantum based technologies and applications follows the avenue of combining different platforms to exploit their complementary technological and functional advantages. Micro and nano-mechanical devices are particularly suitable for hybrid integration due to the easiness of fabrication at multi-scales and their pervasive coupling with electrons and photons. Here, we report on a nanomechanical technological platform where a silicon chip is combined with an aluminum nitride layer. Exploiting the AlN piezoelectricity, Surface Acoustic Waves are injected in the Si layer where the material has been localy patterned and etched to form a suspended nanostring. Characterizing the nanostring vertical displacement induced by the SAW, we found an external excitation peak efficiency in excess of 500 pm/V at 1 GHz mechanical frequency. Exploiting the long term expertise in silicon photonic and electronic devices as well as the SAW robustness and versatility, our technological platform represents a strong candidate for hybrid quantum systems

    Optical properties of bulk high-entropy diborides for solar energy applications

    So far, the studies regarding the innovative High-Entropy Borides (HEBs), which belong to the more general class of Ultra-high temperature ceramics (UHTCs), have been entirely confined to their fabrication or characterization from the microstructural, mechanical and oxidation resistance viewpoints. In this work, the optical properties of two members of HEBs, i.e. (Hf0.2Zr0.2Ta0.2Mo0.2Ti0.2)B2 and (Hf0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2Mo0.2Ti0.2)B2, are evaluated for the first time to assess their possible utilization in the thermal solar energy field. The bulk samples (96.5 % and 97.4 % dense, respectively) are obtained as single-phase products by Spark Plasma Sintering (1950 °C/20 min/20 MPa) starting from powders previously synthesized by Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis (SHS). The optical characterization, whose results are discussed by comparing HEBs to the individual borides, shows that they are characterized by intrinsic spectral selectivity and low thermal emittance, resulting therefore interesting for high-temperature solar absorbers applications

    Validity and reliability of high-resolution ultrasound imaging for the assessment of regional body composition in stage 5 chronic kidney disease patients undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis

High-resolution ultrasound (US) has shown potential as a method to assess muscle and fat mass at specific anatomical sites. However, there is limited evidence for the reliability of US to measure muscle size in patients receiving continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). Therefore, we examined the validity and reliability of an US method compared to a gold standard comparison for the assessment of a quadriceps muscle in this clinical population. Methods: Twenty people receiving CAPD (mean age = 56.5 ± 16.7 years) at a single dialysis unit were assessed on two occasions, 7 days apart. Measures of the mid-thigh, such as vastus lateralis (VL) anatomical cross-sectional area (ACSA), VL muscle thickness and subcutaneous fat thickness were compared for US reliability and validity compared to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measures. Results: US had high validity against gold standard MRI measures, with intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) equating to VL ACSA of 0.95, VL thickness of 0.99 and fat thickness of 0.98. The US measurements also exhibited high intra-rater reliability (ICCs: VL thickness = 0.98, total muscle thickness = 0.97 and fat thickness = 0.99) in measuring body composition at the mid-VL site in the study population. Conclusions: Valid assessment of regional body composition can be achieved via high-resolution US in patients receiving CAPD. The validity and reliability of the US in repeated measures (in comparison to the gold standard MRI) warrant further investigation in the wider chronic kidney disease population.42pubpub

    Integrating fungicide and biocontrol foliar spray on maize grain yield and fumonisin content.

    The adoption of biocontrol is low in maize production, although it has been reported reduction in fumonisin levels when combined with fungicides. The objective of this work was to evaluate the potential of Streptomyces araujoniae (BC1) and Bacillus sp. (BC2) combined or not with the fungicide azoxystrobin+ciproconazol (FG), on grain yield, Fusarium verticillioides incidence and fumonisin (B1 and B2) content. Maize plants were sprayed two times, at V9 and R1 with Water, BC1, BC2, Fungicide alone or in different combinations two by two. All plants were inoculated with F. verticillioides. Upon harvest, treatments were evaluated for total yield, F. verticillioides grain contamination (blotter test) and total fumonisin (B1+B2) contents. FG (V9) + BC1 (R1) resulted in increased yield in three out of four field trials, while all other treatments increased yield in only two. All treatments except FG (V9 + R1) reduced F. verticillioides incidence. None of the treatments reduced fumonisin levels, but FG (V9 + R1), BC1 (V9) + FG (R1) and BC1 (V9) + BC1 (R1) resulted in higher mycotoxin content compared to the control. FG (V9) + BC1 (R1) increased yield, reduced grain contamination and didn?t contribute to higher fumonisin levels compared to control. Therefore, it can contribute to qualitative and quantitative maize grain yield improvement
