Backbone-free duplex-stacked monomer nucleic acids exhibiting Watson-Crick selectivity.
We demonstrate that nucleic acid (NA) mononucleotide triphosphates (dNTPs and rNTPs), at sufficiently high concentration and low temperature in aqueous solution, can exhibit a phase transition in which chromonic columnar liquid crystal ordering spontaneously appears. Remarkably, this polymer-free state exhibits, in a self-assembly of NA monomers, the key structural elements of biological nucleic acids, including: long-ranged duplex stacking of base pairs, complementarity-dependent partitioning of molecules, and Watson-Crick selectivity, such that, among all solutions of adenosine, cytosine, guanine, and thymine NTPs and their binary mixtures, duplex columnar ordering is most stable in the A-T and C-G combinations
Radial force control of Multi-Sector Permanent Magnet machines considering radial rotor displacement
A mathematical model enabling to predict the electromagnetic x-y forces and torque for a given input current in a Multi-Sector Permanent Magnet Synchronous (MSPMS) machine is presented. The rotor static eccentricity is also accounted and the analytical calculations are validated by means Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Furthermore, a novel force and torque control is proposed based on input current minimization and is applied to suppress the Unbalanced Magnetic Pull (UMP) caused by the rotor eccentricity. The effective operation of the force suppression technique is verified by means of FEA
Sizing of power electronics EMC filters using design by optimization methodology
This paper proposes a synthesis of EMC filter design method for power electronics converters. It starts with the description of the legacy approach, using the usual Common Mode / Differential Mode decomposition, and underlines the need of symmetry and the associated limits. Then an illustration of a design by optimization process is provided in the case of a simple switching cell. Finally, a full system composed of a PFC rectifier is provided, using EMC filters on both AC and DC sides. This example requires a design by optimization, since the two filters exhibit strong interactions
Delivering COBie data - Focus on curtain walls and building envelopes
COBie is a standard data framework whose main purpose is to transmit useful, reliable and us-able information collected throughout the whole building process and to be consumed in order to properly maintain the facility. Focusing on Facility Management information exchanges and considering the UK BIM policies and requirements, this paper shows the results obtained applying COBie to complex products such as curtain walls. Two Information Delivery Manuals (IDMs) were also developed, in order to provide a com-monly known and standardized framework, which can regulate the COBie-based information exchanges. Fu-ture developments of this study could concern the application of the developed IDMs to different case studies in order to overtake that specificity characterizing each single project and verify the validity of the proposal
Ash leachates from some recent eruptions of Mount Etna (Italy) and Popocatépetl (Mexico) volcanoes and their impact on amphibian living freshwater organisms
Leaching experiments were carried out on fresh ash samples from Popocatépetl 2012, Etna 2011, and Etna 2012 eruptions, in order to investigate the release of compounds in both double-deionized and lake (Lake Ohrid, FYR of Macedonia) waters. The experiments were carried out using different grain sizes and variable stirring times (from 30 min to 7 days). Results were discussed in the light of changing pH and release of compounds for the different leachates. In particular, Etna samples induced alkalinization, and Popocatépetl samples induced acidification of the corresponding leachates. The release of different elements does not show correlation with the stirring time, with the measured maximum concentrations reached in the first hours of washing. General inverse correlation with grain size was observed only for Na+, K+, Cl-, Ca2+, Mg2+, SO2-4 , and Mn2+, while the other analysed elements show a complex, scattering relationship with grain size. Geochemical modelling highlights leachates' saturation only for F and Si, with Popocatépetl samples sometimes showing saturation in Fe. The analysed leachates are classified as undrinkable for humans on the basis of European laws, due to excess in F-, Mn2+, Fe, and SO2-4 (the latter only for Popocatépetl samples). Finally, the Etna 2012 and Popocatépetl leachates were used for toxicity experiments on living biota (Xenopus laevis). They are mildly toxic, and no significant differences exist between the toxic profiles of the two leachates. In particular, no significant embryo mortality was observed; while even at high dilutions, the leachates produced more than 20% of malformed larvae
The 4.2 ka event in the central Mediterranean: new data from a Corchia speleothem (Apuan Alps, central Italy)
Abstract. We present new data on the 4.2 ka event in the central Mediterranean from
Corchia Cave (Tuscany, central Italy) stalagmite CC27. The stalagmite was
analyzed for stable isotopes (δ13C and δ18O)
and trace elements (Mg, U, P, Y), with all proxies showing a coherent phase
of reduced cave recharge between ca. 4.5 and 4.1 ka BP. Based on the
current climatological data on cyclogenesis, the reduction in cave recharge
is considered to be associated with the weakening of the cyclone center
located in the Gulf of Genoa in response to reduced advection of air masses
from the Atlantic during winter. These conditions, which closely resemble a
positive North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) type of configuration, are
associated with cooler and wetter summers with reduced sea warming, which
reduced the western Mediterranean evaporation during autumn–early winter,
further reducing precipitation
