The trend in wireless communications systems is the enhancement of the network infrastructure with the introduction of small cells, where a specific geographical area is served by low-range, low-power access points. The result is the creation of a heterogeneous topology where macrocells coexist with a variety of small-cell types. In this editorial article we briefly summarize the recent technical advances in the design and deployment of future heterogeneous networks addressed in the papers that compose this special issue. In particular the following aspects are considered: the design of interference and radio resource management algorithms, the analysis of the energy efficiency and power control issues in heterogeneous networks, the concept of coordination in small cell networks, key backhaul aspects of HetNets, deployment issues and overall management strategies.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

PHY Abstraction Methodsfor OFDM and NOFDM Systems, Journal of Telecommunications and Information Technology, 2009 nr 3

    Get PDF
In the paper various PHY abstraction methods for both orthogonal and non-orthogonal systems are presented, which allow to predict the coded block error rate (BLER) across the subcarriers transmitting this FEC-coded block for any given channel realization. First the efficiency of the selected methods is investigated and proved by the means of computer simulations carried out in orthogonal muticarrier scenario. Presented results are followed by the generalization and theoretical extension of these methods for non-orthogonal systems

After presenting a general architecture for including REM databases in different network entities, the article analyzes the achievable benefits in relation to specific interference management techniques, including a discussion on practical considerations such as information exchange requirements, REM ownership, and security aspects. Finally, several research directions derived from the proposed framework are identified.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

ELECTRON: An Architectural Framework for Securing the Smart Electrical Grid with Federated Detection, Dynamic Risk Assessment and Self-Healing

    Get PDF
The electrical grid has significantly evolved over the years, thus creating a smart paradigm, which is well known as the smart electrical grid. However, this evolution creates critical cybersecurity risks due to the vulnerable nature of the industrial systems and the involvement of new technologies. Therefore, in this paper, the ELECTRON architecture is presented as an integrated platform to detect, mitigate and prevent potential cyberthreats timely. ELECTRON combines both cybersecurity and energy defence mechanisms in a collaborative way. The key aspects of ELECTRON are (a) dynamic risk assessment, (b) asset certification, (c) federated intrusion detection and correlation, (d) Software Defined Networking (SDN) mitigation, (e) proactive islanding and (f) cybersecurity training and certification

Deliverable D13.3 del projecte europeu NEWCOM#The report presents the outcome of the Joint Research Activities (JRA) of WP1.3 in the last year of the Newcom# project. The activities focus on the investigation of bandwidth and energy efficient techniques for current and emerging wireless systems. The JRAs are categorized in three Tasks: (i) the first deals with techniques for power efficiency and minimization at the transceiver and network level; (ii) the second deals with the handling of interference by appropriate low interference transmission techniques; (iii) the third is concentrated on Radio Resource Management (RRM) and Interference Management (IM) in selected scenarios, including HetNets and multi-tier networks.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

The PhD thesis addresses research topics related to the study and design of heterogeneous wireless communication systems, compatible with current and upcoming telecommunication standards. The research focus is in: the development of techniques and algorithms for radio resource management and interference management; the development of system design methodologies that support cognitive functionalities; and the development of processes for physical layer algorithmic design. In the field of radio resource and interference management, the goal is in the compatibility of the proposed techniques with the 3GPP LTE/LTE-Advanced and IEEE 802.16 (WiMAX) standards. The work focuses on cellular network topologies that support a variety of small cells. In the proposed solutions special attention is given on the use of radio environmental information – the research led to the creation of a systemic methodology aims to facilitate the integration of cognitive functionalities in a wireless heterogeneous network. In the field of physical layer algorithmic design, the research activity led in the development of a general framework for the design of adaptive modulation and coding algorithms, based on a compact link level performance prediction model of the overall system, suitable for real-time optimization.Η διδακτορική διατριβή πραγματεύεται ερευνητικά θέματα που σχετίζονται με τη μελέτη και σχεδίαση σύγχρονων ετερογενών ραδιοσυστημάτων.
