A document analysis of the visibility of sustainability in TVE teacher education programme: the case of a Malaysian HEI

    Get PDF
There has been a global call for institutions of learning to engage in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) by leading world organisations. Although scholars advocate for an interdisciplinary approach to sustainability, the research literature shows that majority of sustainability issues are addressed through fields such as environmental and developmental education. There has also been a call for the integration of Sustainable Development (SD) in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes by various scholars and bodies such as the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). The issue, however, is that Technical and Vocational Education (TVE) programmes are not yet embracing this call to integrate ESD into their programmes. Hence, it is imperative to reiterate the intersection between TVE and SD and how the former can contribute significantly to the SD agenda. Therefore, by completing a qualitative documentary analysis of a TVE programme, using a Malaysian Higher Education Institution (HEI) as a case study, this paper discusses the visibility of sustainability in TVE programmes as well as explores the overarching goal of ESD and why it is especially crucial for TVE. Findings reveal that the concept of sustainability is only barely reflected in the TVE teacher training curriculum. Recommendations for practice change and further research are presented and discussed

    Get PDF
Wireless Sensors Networks have been the focus of significant attention from research and development due to their applications of collecting data from various fields such as smart cities, power grids, transportation systems, medical sectors, military, and rural areas. Accurate and reliable measurements for insightful data analysis and decision-making are the ultimate goals of sensor networks for critical domains. However, the raw data collected by WSNs usually are not reliable and inaccurate due to the imperfect nature of WSNs. Identifying misbehaviours or anomalies in the network is important for providing reliable and secure functioning of the network. However, due to resource constraints, a lightweight detection scheme is a major design challenge in sensor networks. This paper aims at designing and developing a lightweight anomaly detection scheme to improve efficiency in terms of reducing the computational complexity and communication and improving memory utilization overhead while maintaining high accuracy. To achieve this aim, oneclass learning and dimension reduction concepts were used in the design. The One-Class Support Vector Machine (OCSVM) with hyper-ellipsoid variance was used for anomaly detection due to its advantage in classifying unlabelled and multivariate data. Various One-Class Support Vector Machine formulations have been investigated and Centred-Ellipsoid has been adopted in this study due to its effectiveness. Centred-Ellipsoid is the most effective kernel among studies formulations. To decrease the computational complexity and improve memory utilization, the dimensions of the data were reduced using the Candid Covariance-Free Incremental Principal Component Analysis (CCIPCA) algorithm. Extensive experiments were conducted to evaluate the proposed lightweight anomaly detection scheme. Results in terms of detection accuracy, memory utilization, computational complexity, and communication overhead show that the proposed scheme is effective and efficient compared few existing schemes evaluated. The proposed anomaly detection scheme achieved the accuracy higher than 98%, with O(nd) memory utilization and no communication overhead

This study was carried out to determine the hand properties of cotton woven fabric treated with three different brands of commercial softeners and to identify the stiffness relationship between objective and subjective assessment. The hand properties refer to the impression feels when the fabric is touched, squeezed, rubbed or otherwise handled. The cotton woven fabric was categorized into light to medium weight and medium to heavy weight type. Three different brands of softener; Brand A, Brand B and Brand C were used, and the fabric samples were washed by using top load home washing machine for 48 minutes in each cycle with the detergent and softener added into the washing machine dispenser drawer following the instruction label on the softener’s bottle. After washing process was done, the samples were evaluated objectively by their stiffness and panel experts did subjective assessment on the samples by investigating three attributes namely stiffness, softness, smoothness. The results obtained from objective and subjective evaluation were then analysed using Two-way ANOVA and Kruskal Wallis test respectively

A comparative study on law regulating cybersquatting in the United States of America and Malaysia / Muhammad Farid Omar … [et al.]

Cybersquatting was already an alarming issue throughout the whole world in these millennia. However through our observations in general, we see and discover that some regional minds especially for our scope, which is the proud and loving country of Malaysia have no significance stress on this issue as the heat of this offence either in the eye of the public as well as the Malaysian law itself, shows no inducement of seriousness in the aftermath of such offence. It may be fair to say that maybe the urge for development in this issue had not reach its peak in climax for an evolution and imposition for a much more perfected operation of law instead of only a functional one, but do we really need to actually wait for this issue to reach an alarming height where only then that we should take this offence seriously?. Due to this, we had decided to compare the United States of America's development of law against cybersquatting and make it our guideline of prevention in contrast with our country. Thus in this research, we had humbly highlighted the history of development of both the offence of cybersquatting as well as the stages in development of the Act that had emerged in governing them in both USA and Malaysia. With the degree of comparison with Malaysia, we had thus concluded that the same implementation that the USA had done in their cybersquatting Act should be done to Malaysian Act to improve its certain shortcomings
