Training and development program literature highlights two major characteristics ofsupervisor's role: support and communication. The ability of supervisors to provide adequate supportand practice good communication style in relation to training programs may lead to increased trainingtransfer and motivation to learn. Though the nature of this relationship is significant, little is knownabout the predictive properties of supervisor's roles in training program literatures. Therefore, thisstudy was conducted to measure the effect of supervisor's role on training transfer and motivation tolearn using 110 usable questionnaires gathered from employees who have attended training programs ina state public work agency in East Malaysia, Malaysia. The results of exploratory factor analysisconfirmed that the measurement scales used in this study satisfactorily met the acceptable standards ofvalidity and reliability analyses. Further, the outcomes of stepwise regression analysis showed fourimportant findings: first, support insignificantly correlated with motivation to learn. Second, communication significantly correlated with motivation to learn. Third, support significantly correlatedwith transfer of training. Finally, communication significantly correlated with transfer of learning.Statistically, this result confirms that support is an important antecedent of motivation to learn andcommunication is an important antecedent of motivation to learn. Conversely, support andcommunication are important antecedents of training transfer in the studied organization. In addition, discussion, implications and conclusion are elaborated

Introduction: Carbonated beverages are widely consumed over the world. The effect of acidic liquids on dental enamel has a significant impact on composite resin adhering to the enamel substrate. The purpose of this study was to see how acidic beverages affected the bonding of composite resin to exposed enamel. Methods and Materials: 128 premolars were taken and divided into four groups for both 24 hours immersion (n=40) and 15 days immersion (n=40). The samples were divided into the following categories: G1: 3x/15 mins immersion in Beverage A, G2: 3x/15 mins immersion in Beverage B, G3: 3x/15 mins immersion in Beverage C, G4: 3x/15 mins immersion in artificial saliva as control group. Prior to immersion, the buccal surfaces of the enamel were minimally ground at the layer of enamel solely using a Tungsten carbide bur, then flattened with #600 - #1200 silicon carbide paper (SiC) paper. Specimens were submerged in the media for 24 hours and 15 days, respectively. Following immersion, the specimens’ prepared surfaces were repaired using composite resin. The enamel pattern was morphological analyzed using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and the shear bond strength was determined . Results: One-way ANOVA with multiple comparison tests was used to statistically evaluate the data. When compared to control media, all of the beverages tested significantly reduced shear strength. Following immersion in the test beverages, enamel's morphology changed noticeably, with Beverage A group displaying the most pronounced morphological changes. Conclusion: All acidic beverages examined had a detrimental impact on shear strength. In different periods of time, varied degrees of enamel demineralization were detected

Background: Balancing opioid stewardship and the need for adequate analgesia following discharge after surgery is challenging. This study aimed to compare the outcomes for patients discharged with opioid versus opioid-free analgesia after common surgical procedures. Methods: This international, multicentre, prospective cohort study collected data from patients undergoing common acute and elective general surgical, urological, gynaecological, and orthopaedic procedures. The primary outcomes were patient-reported time in severe pain measured on a numerical analogue scale from 0 to 100% and patient-reported satisfaction with pain relief during the first week following discharge. Data were collected by in-hospital chart review and patient telephone interview 1 week after discharge. Results: The study recruited 4273 patients from 144 centres in 25 countries; 1311 patients (30.7%) were prescribed opioid analgesia at discharge. Patients reported being in severe pain for 10 (i.q.r. 1-30)% of the first week after discharge and rated satisfaction with analgesia as 90 (i.q.r. 80-100) of 100. After adjustment for confounders, opioid analgesia on discharge was independently associated with increased pain severity (risk ratio 1.52, 95% c.i. 1.31 to 1.76; P < 0.001) and re-presentation to healthcare providers owing to side-effects of medication (OR 2.38, 95% c.i. 1.36 to 4.17; P = 0.004), but not with satisfaction with analgesia (beta coefficient 0.92, 95% c.i. -1.52 to 3.36; P = 0.468) compared with opioid-free analgesia. Although opioid prescribing varied greatly between high-income and low- and middle-income countries, patient-reported outcomes did not. Conclusion: Opioid analgesia prescription on surgical discharge is associated with a higher risk of re-presentation owing to side-effects of medication and increased patient-reported pain, but not with changes in patient-reported satisfaction. Opioid-free discharge analgesia should be adopted routinely

    Get PDF
This paper reports recent findings of a research programme focused on the carbonation and permeability of foamed concrete. The objective is to develop an environmentalfriendly and economical material for sustainable construction on peat. A four-year study showed that the rate of carbonation is related to the permeability, time and density. A water permeability test system has been developed based on ISO/DIS7031 and a draft standard prepared. They are aimed at promoting concrete durability research. It features a dual-test method for the measurement of water permeability with the standard 150 mm test cube prior to the determination of compressive strength. The calibration of the test system is by means of a mature test cube of known water permeability. The test system plays complementary role to the existing methods of assessing durability such as carbonation test and rapid chloride permeability. The test method is non-destructive, convenient and reliable for assessing concrete durability in the laboratory at the mix design stage. It can be used subsequently for tests on concrete products and structures for rain water harvesting system. Information technology has been experimented to provide online skill training and the electronic publications of research findings to promote good concrete practice via a concrete innovation blog http://www.1.net.my and a concreteresearch portal http://www.it-lodge.com

After sunset, the indoor of buildings would be relatively warmer as compared to that of the outdoor due to thermal was associated with the heat stored in the building structures and furniture. In tropical countries, doors and windows are usually shut after sunset in order to avoid mosquitoes. Thus, the condition of the indoor air is worsened as the hot air is trapped inside the bedroom and takes long time to be fully dissipated to the surrounding. This causes discomfort to the occupants as bedrooms where they are expecting to have a good rest to rejuvenate from hard day works. The objective of this study was to analyze the nature of air temperature profile in bedrooms of a hostel at night and the effect of ventilation systems in reducing the indoor air temperature. The study was conducted by measuring temperature of air in the bedrooms throughout a night. It was found that the exhaust fan gave the best results by reducing the air temperature by 1.5°C to 2.5°C

Levy Flight Safe Experimentation Dynamics Algorithm for Data-Based PID Tuning of Flexible Joint Robot

    Get PDF
This paper proposes the data-based PID controller of flexible joint robot based on Levy Flight Safe Experimentation Dynamics (LFSED) algorithm. The LFSED algorithm is an enhanced version of SED algorithm where the random perturbation of the updated tuning variable is based on Levy Flight function. By adopting the Levy Flight term to the updated equation of SED, it is expected that a more efficient searching can be performed than the uniform distribution random numbers. The effectiveness of the LFSED algorithm is verified to tune the PID controller of flexible joint robot. In this flexible joint control problem, two PID controllers are utilized to control both rotary angle tracking and vibration of flexible joint robot. The performance of the proposed data-based PID controller is assessed in terms of trajectory tracking of angular motion, vibration reduction and statistical analysis of the predefined control objective function. The simulation results showed that the data-based PID controller based on LFSED is able to produce better control accuracy than the conventional LFSED based method
