A stochastic predictive control approach to project risk management

    Get PDF
This work shows a control policy based on MPC and applied to project risk management. MPC has been applied due the properties that presents such as the easy constraint treatment or the extension to multivariable case. The control actions are the mitigation actions to execute in order to reduce the risk exposure. Stochastic variables have been introduced to model the uncertainties of risk impacts. Integer variables are involved in the optimization problem modelling the mitigation actions

IFAC CONFERENCE ON ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF HYBRID SYSTEMS (.2003.SAINT-MALO BRITTANY, FRANCIA)This work presents a technique for optimal scheduling of projects in terms of time and cost, taking into account risk assessment. Tasks are characterized by p-timed Petri nets, where places have assigned an execution time. The proposed technique minimizes the time execution and the cost of the whole project taking into account the Petri nets describing the tasks and the project risk assessment plan. The risk mitigation is carried on through actions where variables that model them may be discrete or continuousMinisterio de Ciencia y Tecnología DPI200 1-2380-C02-0

A Risk-Based Model Predictive Control Approach to Adaptive Interventions in Behavioral Health

    Get PDF
This brief examines how control engineering and risk management techniques can be applied in the field of behavioral health through their use in the design and implementation of adaptive behavioral interventions. Adaptive interventions are gaining increasing acceptance as a means to improve prevention and treatment of chronic, relapsing disorders, such as abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, mental illness, and obesity. A risk-based model predictive control (MPC) algorithm is developed for a hypothetical intervention inspired by Fast Track, a real-life program whose long-term goal is the prevention of conduct disorders in at-risk children. The MPC-based algorithm decides on the appropriate frequency of counselor home visits, mentoring sessions, and the availability of after-school recreation activities by relying on a model that includes identifiable risks, their costs, and the cost/benefit assessment of mitigating actions. MPC is particularly suited for the problem because of its constraint-handling capabilities, and its ability to scale to interventions involving multiple tailoring variables. By systematically accounting for risks and adapting treatment components over time, an MPC approach as described in this brief can increase intervention effectiveness and adherence while reducing waste, resulting in advantages over conventional fixed treatment. A series of simulations are conducted under varying conditions to demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithm

Object oriented modelling and simulation of hydropower plants with run-of-river scheme: A new simulation tool

    Get PDF
This paper presents the design of a component library for modelling hydropower plants, and describes the development of a new simulation tool for small hydropower plants with a run-of-river scheme. After reviewing the desirable features of simulation, an approach based on an object oriented modelling language, like EcosimPro, is presented. A general model of hydropower plant with run-of-river scheme is created with this component library. It provides the possibility of choosing a specific number of turbines and spillway gates. In this way, several hydropower stations of similar operating characteristics can be simulated using this same general model. It is expected to obtain interesting information in simulation like the reservoir level, water flows, turbine efficiencies, and so on. In addition, a graphical user interface has been designed in order to operate this general model more easily, to configure plant parameters and to simulate the plant behaviour under different conditions. Three real stations have been used as real examples for validating the model and testing the simulator: hydropower stations of Villafranca and El Carpio (Córdoba, Spain) and Marmolejo (Jaén, Spain)

    Get PDF

IFC+: Towards the integration of IoT into early stages of building design

    Get PDF
The integration of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies into Building Information Modelling (BIM) provides significant opportunities to support useful services and functionalities for end users in buildings, enabling so-called smart spaces (e.g. smart buildings and smart homes). Current approaches perform this integration to access the deployed IoT devices once the building is constructed using Building Automation Systems (BAS), Building Information Systems (BIS) and Building Control Systems (BCS). Thus, the integration of IoT devices into the early stages of building design to describe IoT scenarios and IoT practices is still neglected, despite the benefits it can provide by being involved in the entire building lifecycle, e.g. cost estimation, stronger facility management, collaborative approach, simplification of tasks for developers/programmers through the integration with BIS, BAS and BCS, and a more holistic management of the IoT infrastructure. This paper presents a solution to integrate IoT into the design stage (modelling) of buildings in BIM processes, through two main contributions: Industry Foundation Classes Plus (IFC+), an extension to the latest version of IFC where new types of entities have been added to support the modelling of IoT scenarios; and a digital object-based approach to transform smart-built environment specifications in IFC+ into consumable software, with the aim of supporting IoT scenarios. This paper illustrates the applicability of the proposed method in the context of design processes, the metamodel (schema) of IFC+, the proposed approach, and a proof of concept with a clarifying use case. This paper was funded by the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades under contracts RTI2018-100754-B-I00 (iSUN project) and RTI2018-098160-B-I00 (Air Forecasting project).

Multivariate Statistical Network Monitoring-Sensor: An effective tool for real-time monitoring and anomaly detection in complex networks and systems

    Get PDF
Technology evolves quickly. Low-cost and ready-to-connect devices are designed to provide new services and applications. Smart grids or smart health care systems are some examples of these applications. In this totally connected scenario, some security issues arise due to the large number of devices and communications. In this way, new solutions for monitoring and detecting security events are needed to address new challenges brought about by this scenario, among others, the real-time requirement allowing quick security event detection and, consequently, quick response to attacks. In this sense, Intrusion Detection Systems are widely used though their evaluation often relies on the use of predefined network datasets that limit their application in real environments. In this work, a real-time and ready-to-use tool for monitoring and detecting security events is introduced. The Multivariate Statistical Network Monitoring-Sensor is based on the Multivariate Statistical Network Monitoring methodology and provides an alternative way for evaluating Multivariate Statistical Network Monitoring-based Intrusion Detection System solutions. Experimental results based on the detection of well-known attacks in hierarchical network systems prove the suitability of this tool for complex scenarios, such as those found in smart cities or Internet of Things ecosystem
