Probability density function of turbulent velocity fluctuations in rough-wall boundary layer

The probability density function of single-point velocity fluctuations in turbulence is studied systematically using Fourier coefficients in the energy-containing range. In ideal turbulence where energy-containing motions are random and independent, the Fourier coefficients tend to Gaussian and independent of each other. Velocity fluctuations accordingly tend to Gaussian. However, if energy-containing motions are intermittent or contaminated with bounded-amplitude motions such as wavy wakes, the Fourier coefficients tend to non-Gaussian and dependent of each other. Velocity fluctuations accordingly tend to non-Gaussian. These situations are found in our experiment of a rough-wall boundary layer.Comment: 6 pages, to appear in Physical Review

Diffusion of Mn interstitials in (Ga,Mn)As epitaxial layers

Magnetic properties of thin (Ga,Mn)As layers improve during annealing by out-diffusion of interstitial Mn ions to a free surface. Out-diffused Mn atoms participate in the growth of a Mn-rich surface layer and a saturation of this layer causes an inhibition of the out-diffusion. We combine high-resolution x-ray diffraction with x-ray absorption spectroscopy and a numerical solution of the diffusion problem for the study of the out-diffusion of Mn interstitials during a sequence of annealing steps. Our data demonstrate that the out-diffusion of the interstitials is substantially affected by the internal electric field caused by an inhomogeneous distribution of charges in the (Ga,Mn)As layer.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure

Before the ignorance of our clients in the configuration and / or managing of the equipment of audio, and understanding the great problematic that exists for not being able to avoid common faults as the hiss, popeo, snap, feedback, humm, echo, between other parameters, which have to choose to contract hereby empirical services that do not solve all audio problems, or of companies that charge high prices or compel to buying the equipments of audio that they sell. We offer the best solution, this way to form and / or to improve the audio quality that is being emitted by the equipments in any type of events that the client requests. The study includes a study of financial viability to detail the costs that there implies the creation and development of a microcompany of this type, the income that are foreseen to obtain and of this form, with financial criteria and taking as a base the market research, the convenience of the project

A Minimal, Unstrained S-Allyl Handle for Pre-Targeting Diels-Alder Bioorthogonal Labeling in Live Cells

The unstrained S-allyl cysteine amino acid was site-specifically installed on apoptosis protein biomarkers and was further used as a chemical handle and ligation partner for 1,2,4,5-tetrazines by means of an inverse-electron-demand Diels-Alder reaction. We demonstrate the utility of this minimal handle for the efficient labeling of apoptotic cells using a fluorogenic tetrazine dye in a pre-targeting approach. The small size, easy chemical installation, and selective reactivity of the S-allyl handle towards tetrazines should be readily extendable to other proteins and biomolecules, which could facilitate their labeling within live cells.China Scholarship Council, FCT Portugal, European Union (Marie-Sklodowska Curie ITN Protein Conjugates; Marie-Sklodowska Curie IEF), MINECO (CTQ2015-70524-R and RYC-2013-14706), Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, BiFi (Memento cluster), Royal Society, European Research Counci

    Can Europe recover without credit?

    Get PDF
Data from 135 countries covering five decades suggests that creditless recoveries, in which the stock of real credit does not return to the pre-crisis level for three years after the GDP trough, are not rare and are characterised by remarkable real GDP growth rates: 4.7 percent per year in middle-income countries and 3.2 percent per year in high-income countries. However, the implications of these historical episodes for the current European situation are limited, for two main reasons. First, creditless recoveries are much less common in highincome countries, than in low-income countries which are financially undeveloped. European economies heavily depend on bank loans and research suggests that loan supply played a major role in the recent weak credit performance of Europe. There are reasons to believe that, despite various efforts, normal lending has not yet been restored. Limited loan supply could be disruptive for the European economic recovery and there has been only a minor substitution of bank loans with debt securities. Second, creditless recoveries were associated with significant real exchange rate depreciation, which has hardly occurred so far in most of Europe. This stylised fact suggests that it might be difficult to re-establish economic growth in the absence of sizeable real exchange rate depreciation, if credit growth does not return

During this epoch, Portuguese gardens, such as the one surrounding the Fishing House, were commonly ornamented with glazed wall tile claddings. Currently, some of these outdoor tile panels are covered with dark colored biofilms, contributing to undesirable aesthetic changes and eventually inducing chemical and physical damage to the tile surfaces. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that the investigated biofilms are mainly composed of green algae, cyanobacteria and dematiaceous fungi. With the aim of mitigating biodeterioration, four different biocides (TiO2 nanoparticles, Biotin® T, Preventol® RI 80 and Albilex Biostat®) were applied in situ to the glazed wall tiles. Their efficacy was monitored by visual examination, epifluorescence microscopy and DNA-based analysis. Significant changes in the microbial community composition were observed 4 months after treatment with Preventol® RI 80 and Biotin® T. Although the original community was inactivated after these treatments, an early stage of re-colonization was detected 6 months after the biocide application. TiO2 nanoparticles showed promising results due to their self-cleaning effect, causing the detachment of the biofilm from the tile surface, which remained clean 6 and even 24 months after biocide application. This work was supported by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT-MCTES) under grant no.
