Relating adults' lives and learning: participation and engagement in different settings
This report shows how an understanding of language, literacy andnumeracy as social practices can help practitioners to take account oflearners' lives. It demonstrates how people's histories, currentcircumstances and imagined futures can shape their learning andaffect their level of engagement. The study is based on the research ofthe Adult Learners' Lives project in community settings in Blackburn,Lancaster and Liverpool
Coefficient of performance at maximum figure of merit and its bounds for low-dissipation Carnot-like refrigerators
The figure of merit for refrigerators performing finite-time Carnot-like
cycles between two reservoirs at temperature and () is
optimized. It is found that the coefficient of performance at maximum figure of
merit is bounded between 0 and for the
low-dissipation refrigerators, where is the
Carnot coefficient of performance for reversible refrigerators. These bounds
can be reached for extremely asymmetric low-dissipation cases when the ratio
between the dissipation constants of the processes in contact with the cold and
hot reservoirs approaches to zero or infinity, respectively. The observed
coefficients of performance for real refrigerators are located in the region
between the lower and upper bounds, which is in good agreement with our
theoretical estimation.Comment: 5 journal pages, 3 figure

Efficiency at maximum power of minimally nonlinear irreversible heat engines
We propose the minimally nonlinear irreversible heat engine as a new general
theoretical model to study the efficiency at the maximum power of heat
engines operating between the hot heat reservoir at the temperature and
the cold one at (). Our model is based on the extended
Onsager relations with a new nonlinear term meaning the power dissipation. In
this model, we show that is bounded from the upper side by a function
of the Carnot efficiency as . We demonstrate the validity of our theory by showing that
the low-dissipation Carnot engine can easily be described by our theory.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figur
Stability and electronic structure of the complex KPtCl structure-type hydrides
The stability and bonding of the ternary complex KPtCl structure
hydrides is discussed using first principles density functional calculations.
The cohesion is dominated by ionic contributions, but ligand field effects are
important, and are responsible for the 18-electron rule. Similarities to oxides
are discussed in terms of the electronic structure. However, phonon
calculations for SrRuH also show differences, particularly in the
polarizability of the RuH octahedra. Nevertheless, the yet to be made
compounds PbRuH and BeFeH are possible ferroelectrics. The
electronic structure and magnetic properties of the decomposition product,
FeBe are reported. Implications of the results for H storage are discussed
Kinetic theory of point vortex systems from the Bogoliubov-Born-Green-Kirkwood-Yvon hierarchy
Kinetic equations are derived from the Bogoliubov-Born-Green-Kirkwood-Yvon
(BBGKY) hierarchy for point vortex systems in an infinite plane. As the level
of approximation for the Landau equation, the collision term of the kinetic
equation derived coincides with that by Chavanis ({\it Phys. Rev. E} {\bf 64},
026309 (2001)). Furthermore, we derive a kinetic equation corresponding to the
Balescu-Lenard equation for plasmas, using the theory of the Fredholm integral
equation. For large , this kinetic equation is reduced to the Landau
equation above.Comment: 10 pages, No figures. To be published in Physical Review E, 76-
Modular Groups, Visibility Diagram and Quantum Hall Effect
We consider the action of the modular group on the set of
positive rational fractions. From this, we derive a model for a classification
of fractional (as well as integer) Hall states which can be visualized on two
``visibility" diagrams, the first one being associated with even denominator
fractions whereas the second one is linked to odd denominator fractions. We use
this model to predict, among some interesting physical quantities, the relative
ratios of the width of the different transversal resistivity plateaus. A
numerical simulation of the tranversal resistivity plot based on this last
prediction fits well with the present experimental data.Comment: 17 pages, plain TeX, 4 eps figures included (macro epsf.tex), 1
