Mean curvature flow closes open ends of noncompact surfaces of rotation

    Get PDF
We discuss the motion of noncompact axisymmetric hypersurfaces Tt volved by mean curvature flow. Our study provides a class of hypersurfaces hat share the same quenching time with that of the shrinking ylinder evolved by the flow and prove that they tend to a smooth hypersurface aving no pinching neck and having closed ends at infinity of the xis of rotation as the quenching time is approached. Moreover, they are ompletely characterized by a condition on initial hypersurface

Multiple peak aggregations for the Keller-Segel system

In this paper we derive matched asymptotic expansions for a solution of the Keller-Segel system in two space dimensions for which the amount of mass aggregation is 8πN8\pi N, where N=1,2,3,...N=1,2,3,... Previously available asymptotics had been computed only for the case in which N=1

Successful management of tracheo-innominate artery fistula with endovascular stent graft repair

AbstractTracheo-innominate artery fistula is a highly lethal complication after tracheostomy. A 37-year-old man who had undergone a tracheostomy 14 years earlier because of dysphagia after brain surgery had a tracheo-innominate artery fistula with exsanguinating hemorrhage from his tracheostomy site. After temporary control of the bleeding, a stent graft was implanted in the innominate artery through the brachial artery. The patient recovered uneventfully and remained well 14 months after the procedure, with no sign of infection. Endovascular stent grafting may be the treatment of choice for patients with tracheo-innominate artery fistula. (J Vasc Surg 2001;33:1280-2.

Gamifying the visit to places with valuable landscapes

    Get PDF
The landscape, in general, is full of meaning and has been studied over time by experts in different fields. In 1992, the landscape was considered a World Heritage Site with the designation of "Cultural Landscape". Despite this relevance, in many regions, there are places with valuable landscapes that are unknown to most of the population. This paper describes a mobile tool for finding and sharing places with valuable landscapes, which includes gamification components to motivate users to search for new places and share them. It is also presented an evaluation of the tool, in terms of user experience and including the assessment of gamification features. The tests were carried out in the Cultural Landscape of Sintra, considered world heritage since 1995.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Antitumor effects of α-bisabolol against pancreatic cancer.

In the present study, we investigated whether α-bisabolol, a sesquiterpene alcohol present in essential oils derived from a variety of plants, has antitumor effects against pancreatic cancer. α-Bisabolol induced a decrease in cell proliferation and viability in pancreatic cancer cell lines (KLM1, KP4, Panc1, MIA Paca2), but not in pancreatic epithelial cells (ACBRI515). α-Bisabolol treatment induced apoptosis and suppressed Akt activation in pancreatic cancer cell lines. Furthermore, α-bisabolol treatment induced the overexpression of early growth response-1 (EGR1), whereas EGR1 siRNA decreased the α-bisabolol-induced cell death of KLM1 cells. Tumor growth in both subcutaneous and peritoneal xenograft nude mouse models was significantly inhibited by intragastric administration of 1000 mg/kg of α-bisabolol, once a week for three weeks. The results indicate that α-bisabolol could be a novel therapeutic option for the treatment of pancreatic cancer
