Should Peak Dose Be Used to Prescribe Spatially Fractionated Radiation Therapy?-A Review of Preclinical Studies.

    Get PDF
Spatially fractionated radiotherapy (SFRT) is characterized by the coexistence of multiple hot and cold dose subregions throughout the treatment volume. In preclinical studies using single-fraction treatment, SFRT can achieve a significantly higher therapeutic index than conventional radiotherapy (RT). Published clinical studies of SFRT followed by RT have reported promising results for bulky tumors. Several clinical trials are currently underway to further explore the clinical benefits of SFRT. However, we lack the important understanding of the correlation between dosimetric parameters and treatment response that we have in RT. In this work, we reviewed and analyzed this important correlation from previous preclinical SFRT studies. We reviewed studies prior to 2022 that treated animal-bearing tumors with minibeam radiotherapy (MBRT) or microbeam radiotherapy (MRT). Eighteen studies met our selection criteria. Increased lifespan (ILS) relative to control was used as the treatment response. The preclinical SFRT dosimetric parameters analyzed were peak dose, valley dose, average dose, beam width, and beam spacing. We found that valley dose was the dosimetric parameter with the strongest correlation with ILS (p-value < 0.01). For studies using MRT, average dose and peak dose were also significantly correlated with ILS (p-value < 0.05). This first comprehensive review of preclinical SFRT studies shows that the valley dose (rather than the peak dose) correlates best with treatment outcome (ILS)

Street and dwelling: relationship between public space and community life

    Get PDF
The public space is basic and complementary to dwelling, because of the activities that are done there, so, this space is considered as a physical, functional and sociocultural extension of what occurs within houses. In order to understand this relationship, it is important to know the historical fact through their recent expression, because it is an opportunity to rethink the proper and consistency of our public spaces as well as their scales, fields and complementary relationships with the aim to create an external and holistic habitat of dwelling but at the same time interdependent with it, fundamental basis for defining its quality and livability. The methodology is mixed: observation of the buildings as well as inhabitant and user survey.

Synthesis of fluorescent dendrimeric antigen efficiently internalized by human dendritic cells

    Get PDF
A new fluorescent dendrimeric antigen (DeAn) based on a dendron with amoxicilloyl terminal groups has been synthetized. The synthesis implies a novel class of all-aliphatic polyamide dendrimer (BisAminoalkylPolyAmide Dendrimers, or BAPAD).[1] The introduction of a cystamine core allows the incorporation of this dendrons into a 1,8-naphthalimide fluorofore functionalized with a maleimide group. The fluorescence properties of this DeAn has been studied and compared with the properties of an equivalent dendron possessing amino-terminal groups. This DeAn has been used as a synthetic antigen in a biomedical assay that tests the amoxicillin sensitivity of dendritic cells (DC) from tolerant and allergic patients.Universidad de Málaga. Preservation and interpretation of pollen in hyaena coprolites: taphonomic observations from Spain and southern Africa

    Get PDF
Main articleA survey of palynological research on hyaena coprolites from 10 fossil sites in southern Africa and 4 from Spain shows that coprolites from 10 out of the 14 sites contained fossil pollen. Pollen-bearing coprolites are generally richer in pollen than the surrounding sediments. Provisionally it seems that the sites with poor or no pollen in coprolites are relatively old or have been exposed to wet and dry moisture fluctuations, namely Makapansgat, Gran Dolina, Redcliff Cave and Erfkroon. This suggests that conditions during their long histories eventually destroyed pollen through oxidation associated with regular saturation of sediments. The composition of pollen spectra and preservation of pollen grains from coprolites is compared with that in fresh hyaena dung. SEM studies suggest that pollen grains in fresh dung and in fossil coprolites if preserved under suitable cave conditions, are generally well preserved with little damage. The damage traits require further systematic investigation in order to assess their taphonomic significance but selective destruction of pollen through ingestion, if any, seems to be light. Of particular interest to palaeoenvironmental studies is the observation that pollen assemblages preserved in hyaena dung are likely to provide relatively unbiased characterizations of vegetation representative of the wide surroundings in which the hyaenas were active. This implies that where pollen was relatively wellpreserved in coprolites, it can provide palaeoenvironmental information extending beyond the immediate environs of the site in which they were found. Any possible bias introduced through behaviour-related pollen trapping is, however, difficult to exclude.National Research Foundation (GUN 2053236), projects MCyT-DGI(BTE 2000-1309), PI-17/00739/FS/01, BOS 2000-0149 and REN 2003-02499-GL

Business Process Management for optimizing clinical processes: A systematic literature review

    Get PDF
Business Process Management is a new strategy for process management that is having a major impact today. Mainly, its use is focused on the industrial, services, and business sector. However, in recent years, it has begun to apply for optimizing clinical processes. So far, no studies that evaluate its true impact on the healthcare sector have been found. This systematic review aims to assess the results of the application of Business Process Management methodology on clinical processes, analyzing whether it can become a useful tool to improve the effectiveness and quality of processes. We conducted a systematic literature review using ScienceDirect, Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, and Springer databases. After the electronic search process in different databases, 18 articles met the pre-established requirements. The findings support the use of Business Process Management as an effective methodology to optimize clinical processes. Business Process Management has proven to be a feasible and useful methodology to design and optimize clinical processes, as well as to automate tasks. However, a more comprehensive follow-up of this methodology, better technological support, and greater involvement of all the clinical staff are factors that play a key role for the development of its true potential. This work was supported by the Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad of the Spanish Government (ref. New acyl hydrazones with promising photophysical properties

    Get PDF
Hydrazones have become of great interest for the scientific community due to their promising chemical properties and biological activities. In this group of compounds, the acyl or aryl hydrazones, that are Schiff bases composed by the C=N-NH-CO- group are even more interesting because they present biological activities like antimicrobial, anti-HIV, anticancer, etc. Moreover, these compounds also exhibit interesting properties as multi-stimuli responsive materials [1]. In this study the synthesis and the photophysical properties of a series of new substituted acylhydrazones is presented. In order to explore how donor or acceptor units would influence the behavior of these molecules, different substituents have been introduced in the benzoyl ring. Besides, different aromatic rings have been included in their structures (see Figure 1). Thanks to their structural characteristics, these compounds present two types of features: i) they are able to coordinate with metal cations and ii) the photo-induced configurational E/Z isomerization. All acylhydrazones have been obtained in the E conformation and E/Z isomerization is found to take place either photochemically or thermally. Through a joint experimental and theoretical investigation, we have been able to conclude which conformers are the most probable and why in some cases the isomerization process is completed while it is not in others. Interestingly, the structural factors (such as the presence of intramolecular hydrogen bonds) that are affecting the most both the formation of the coordination process and the E/Z conversion have been successfully identified [2].Universidad de Málaga.
