    Hybrid tilted fiber grating based refractive index and liquid level sensing system

    We report a refractive index (RI) and liquid level sensing system based on a hybrid grating structure comprising of a 45° and an 81° tilted fiber gratings (TFGs) that have been inscribed into a single mode fiber in series. In this structure, the 45°-TFG is used as a polarizer to filter out the transverse electric (TE) component and enable the 81°-TFG operating at single polarization for RI and level sensing. The experiment results show a lower temperature cross-sensitivity, only about 7.33 pm/°C, and a higher RI sensitivity, being around 180 nm/RIU at RI=1.345 and 926 nm/RIU at RI=1.412 region, which are significantly improved in comparison with long period fiber gratings. The hybrid grating structure has also been applied as a liquid level sensor, showing 3.06 dB/mm linear peak ratio sensitivity

    Numerical and experimental analysis of sensitivity-enhanced RI sensor based on Ex-TFG in thin cladding fiber

    We report a highly sensitive refractive index (RI) sensor in the aqueous solution, which is based on an 81°-tilted fiber grating structure inscribed into a thin cladding fiber with 40 μm cladding radius. The numerical analysis has indicated that the RI sensitivity of cladding resonance mode of the grating can be significantly enhanced with reducing cladding size. This has been proved by the experimental results as the RI sensitivities of TM and TE resonance peaks in the index region of 1.345 have been increased to 1180 nm/RIU and 1150 nm/RIU, respectively, from only 200 and 170 nm/RIU for the same grating structure inscribed in standard telecom fiber with 62.5-μm cladding radius. Although the temperature sensitivity has also increased, the change in temperature sensitivity is still insignificant in comparison with RI sensitivity enhancement

    Intention Understanding in Human-Robot Interaction Based on Visual-NLP Semantics

    With the rapid development of robotic and AI technology in recent years, human-robot interaction has made great advancement, making practical social impact. Verbal commands are one of the most direct and frequently used means for human-robot interaction. Currently, such technology can enable robots to execute pre-defined tasks based on simple and direct and explicit language instructions, e.g., certain keywords must be used and detected. However, that is not the natural way for human to communicate. In this paper, we propose a novel task-based framework to enable the robot to comprehend human intentions using visual semantics information, such that the robot is able to satisfy human intentions based on natural language instructions (total three types, namely clear, vague, and feeling, are defined and tested). The proposed framework includes a language semantics module to extract the keywords despite the explicitly of the command instruction, a visual object recognition module to identify the objects in front of the robot, and a similarity computation algorithm to infer the intention based on the given task. The task is then translated into the commands for the robot accordingly. Experiments are performed and validated on a humanoid robot with a defined task: to pick the desired item out of multiple objects on the table, and hand over to one desired user out of multiple human participants. The results show that our algorithm can interact with different types of instructions, even with unseen sentence structures

    Excessively tilted fiber grating based Fe3O4 saturable absorber for passively mode-locked fiber laser

    A novel approach to saturable absorber (SA) formation is presented by taking advantage of the mode coupling property of excessively tilted fiber grating (Ex-TFG). Stable mode-locked operation can be conveniently achieved based on the interaction between Ex- TFG coupled light and deposited ferroferric-oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles. The central wavelength, bandwidth and single pulse duration of the output are 1595 nm, 4.05 nm, and 912 fs, respectively. The fiber laser exhibits good long-term stability with signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 67 dB. For the first time, to the best of our knowledge, Ex-TFG based Fe3O4 SA for mode-locked fiber laser is demonstrated

    Unraveling and manipulating of NADH oxidation by photo-generated holes

    Photoenzymatic coupled catalysis, integrating semiconductor photocatalysis and enzymatic catalysis, exhibits great potential for light-driven synthesis. To make photocatalyst and enzyme at play concertedly, nicotinamide-based cofactors have been widely used as electron carrier. However, these cofactors are easily oxidized into enzymatically inactive form by photo-generated holes. Herein, oxidation mechanism of NADH, one typical nicotinamide-based cofactor, by photo-generated holes was reported. With CdS, g-C3N4 and BiVO4 as hole generators, NADH is oxidized into NAD+ or fragmented into ADP-ribose derivatives through multi-step electron transfer. Importantly, fragmentation reaction is inhibited with dopamine and neutral red to coordinate electron transfer between NADH and photo-generated holes

    Abdomen anatomic characteristics on CT scans as predictive markers for short-term complications following radical resection of colorectal cancer

    BackgroundPrediction and management of short-term postoperative complications in patients with colorectal cancer are essential in postoperative rehabilitation. Through CT scan images, we can easily measure some parameters of abdomen anatomic characteristics. This study aimed to assess whether there is a relationship between the abdomen anatomic characteristics and short-term postoperative complications.Materials and methodsWe conducted a retrospective study. Eighty patients in each complication group and non-complication group were recruited with propensity score match. Demographics, perioperative laboratory results and surgical information were collected and compared between groups with univariate analysis. Significant elements were brought into subsequent logistic regression analysis and ROC analysis for further identification.ResultsUnivariate analysis showed that preoperative white blood cells, preoperative neutrophil counts, rectus abdominis thickness (RAT), subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT), and abdomen depth (AD) were significantly different between the complication group and non-complication group. Logistic regression analysis demonstrated that higher RAT (p = 0.002), SFT (p < 0.001) and AD (p < 0.001) independently predicted the incidence of short-term postoperative complications.ConclusionsIn this study on patients undergoing radical resection of colorectal cancer, abdomen anatomic characteristics including higher RAT, SFT and AD are associated with an increased risk of short-term postoperative complications

    Theoretical and experimental analysis of excessively tilted fiber gratings

    We have theoretically and experimentally investigated the dual-peak feature of tilted fiber gratings with excessively tilted structure (named as Ex-TFGs). We have explained the dual-peak feature by solving eigenvalue equations for TM0m and TE0m of a circular waveguide, in which the TE (transverse electric) and TM (transverse magnetic) core modes are coupled into TE and TM cladding modes, respectively. Meanwhile, in the experiment, we have verified that one of the dual peaks at the shorter wavelength is due to the TM mode coupling whereas the other one at the longer wavelength arises from TE mode coupling when a linearly polarized light launched into the Ex-TFG. We have also investigated the peak separation of TE and TM cladding mode for different surrounding medium refractive indexes (SRI), revealed that the dual peaks separation is decreasing as increasing of SRI, which agrees very well with the theoretical analysis results

    ppk23-Dependent Chemosensory Functions Contribute to Courtship Behavior in Drosophila melanogaster

    Insects utilize diverse families of ion channels to respond to environmental cues and control mating, feeding, and the response to threats. Although degenerin/epithelial sodium channels (DEG/ENaC) represent one of the largest families of ion channels in Drosophila melanogaster, the physiological functions of these proteins are still poorly understood. We found that the DEG/ENaC channel ppk23 is expressed in a subpopulation of sexually dimorphic gustatory-like chemosensory bristles that are distinct from those expressing feeding-related gustatory receptors. Disrupting ppk23 or inhibiting activity of ppk23-expressing neurons did not alter gustatory responses. Instead, blocking ppk23-positive neurons or mutating the ppk23 gene delayed the initiation and reduced the intensity of male courtship. Furthermore, mutations in ppk23 altered the behavioral response of males to the female-specific aphrodisiac pheromone 7(Z), 11(Z)-Heptacosadiene. Together, these data indicate that ppk23 and the cells expressing it play an important role in the peripheral sensory system that determines sexual behavior in Drosophila
