Numerical Construction of LISS Lyapunov Functions under a Small Gain Condition
In the stability analysis of large-scale interconnected systems it is
frequently desirable to be able to determine a decay point of the gain
operator, i.e., a point whose image under the monotone operator is strictly
smaller than the point itself. The set of such decay points plays a crucial
role in checking, in a semi-global fashion, the local input-to-state stability
of an interconnected system and in the numerical construction of a LISS
Lyapunov function. We provide a homotopy algorithm that computes a decay point
of a monotone op- erator. For this purpose we use a fixed point algorithm and
provide a function whose fixed points correspond to decay points of the
monotone operator. The advantage to an earlier algorithm is demonstrated.
Furthermore an example is given which shows how to analyze a given perturbed

Human motion tracking based on complementary Kalman filter
Miniaturized Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) has been widely used in many motion capturing applications. In order to overcome stability and noise problems of IMU, a lot of efforts have been made to develop appropriate data fusion method to obtain reliable orientation estimation from IMU data. This article presents a method which models the errors of orientation, gyroscope bias and magnetic disturbance, and compensate the errors of state variables with complementary Kalman filter in a body motion capture system. Experimental results have shown that the proposed method significantly reduces the accumulative orientation estimation errors

Satellite estimates of wide-range suspended sediment concentrations in Changjiang (Yangtze) estuary using MERIS data
The Changjiang (Yangtze) estuarine and coastal waters are characterized by suspended sediments over a wide range of concentrations from 20 to 2,500 mg l-1. Suspended sediment plays important roles in the estuarine and coastal system and environment. Previous algorithms for satellite estimates of suspended sediment concentration (SSC) showed a great limitation in that only low to moderate concentrations (up to 50 mg l-1) could be reliably estimated. In this study, we developed a semi-empirical radiative transfer (SERT) model with physically based empirical coefficients to estimate SSC from MERIS data over turbid waters with a much wider range of SSC. The model was based on the Kubelka–Munk two-stream approximation of radiative transfer theory and calibrated using datasets from in situ measurements and outdoor controlled tank experiments. The results show that the sensitivity and saturation level of remote-sensing reflectance to SSC are dependent on wavelengths and SSC levels. Therefore, the SERT model, coupled with a multi-conditional algorithm scheme adapted to satellite retrieval of wide-range SSC, was proposed. Shear Capacity of Monolithic Concrete Joints without Transverse Reinforcement.
yesA mechanism analysis based on the upper-bound theorem of concrete plasticity for monolithic concrete joints without transverse reinforcement is presented. Concrete is modelled as a rigid–perfectly plastic material obeying modified Coulomb failure criteria. Existing stress–strain relationships of concrete in compression and tension are comprehensively modified using the crack band theory to allow for concrete type and maximum aggregate size. Simple equations for the effectiveness factor for compression, ratio of effective tensile strength to compressive strength and angle of concrete friction are then mathematically developed using the modified stress–strain relationships of concrete. In addition, 12 push-off specimens made of all-lightweight, sand–lightweight and normal-weight concrete having maximum aggregate size between 4 and 19 mm were physically tested. Test results and mechanism analysis clearly showed that the shear capacity of monolithic concrete joints increased with the increase of the maximum aggregate size and dry density of concrete. The mean and standard deviation of the ratio between experimentally measured and predicted (by the mechanism analysis shear capacities) are 1·01 and 0·16 respectively, showing a closer prediction and less variation than Vecchio and Collins' equation, regardless of concrete type and maximum aggregate size
Micrometer-sized point temperature sensor in Er : ZBLALiP
A new kind of Erbium-doped heavy fluoride glass Er:ZBLALiP was elaborated, and microspheres were fabricated with this fluoride glass. Thermal properties and spectroscopic properties of Er:ZBLALiP excited at 805 nm were investigated. Based on this thermalization effects between upper levels of green fluorescence in Er:ZBLALiP, we proposed an optical temperature sensing using micrometer-sized spherical cavity. The sphere temperature is scaled by the ratio of green emission intensities at 522 and 547 nm. A wide dynamic temperature ranging from 100 K to 850 K can be utilized by this type of point temperature sensor
Clinical significance of VEGF-A, -C and -D expression in esophageal malignancies
Vascular endothelial growth factors ( VEGF)- A, - C and - D are members of the proangiogenic VEGF family of glycoproteins. VEGF-A is known to be the most important angiogenic factor under physiological and pathological conditions, while VEGF-C and VEGF-D are implicated in the development and sprouting of lymphatic vessels, so called lymphangiogenesis. Local tumor progression, lymph node metastases and hematogenous tumor spread are important prognostic factors for esophageal carcinoma ( EC), one of the most lethal malignancies throughout the world. We found solid evidence in the literature that VEGF expression contributes to tumor angiogenesis, tumor progression and lymph node metastasis in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma ( SCC), and many authors could show a prognostic value for VEGF-assessment. In adenocarcinoma (AC) of the esophagus angiogenic properties are acquired in early stages, particularly in precancerous lesions like Barrett's dysplasia. However, VEGF expression fails to give prognostic information in AC of the esophagus. VEGF-C and VEGF-D were detected in SCC and dysplastic lesions, but not in normal mucosa of the esophagus. VEGF-C expression might be associated with lymphatic tumor invasion, lymph node metastases and advanced disease in esophageal SCC and AC. Therapeutic interference with VEGF signaling may prove to be a promising way of anti-angiogenic co-treatment in esophageal carcinoma. However, concrete clinical data are still pending
Proximity of Iron Pnictide Superconductors to a Quantum Tricritical Point
We determine the nature of the magnetic quantum critical point in the doped
LaFeAsO using a set of constrained density functional calculations that provide
ab initio coefficients for a Landau order parameter analysis. The system turns
out to be remarkably close to a quantum tricritical point, where the nature of
the phase transition changes from first to second order. We compare with the
effective field theory and discuss the experimental consequences.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Direct and indirect effects of soil fauna, fungi and plants on greenhouse gas fluxes
Soils harbour diverse soil fauna and a wide range of soil microorganisms. These fauna and microorganisms directly contribute to soil greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes via their respiratory and metabolic activities and indirectly by changing the physical, chemical and biological properties of soils through bioturbation, fragmentation and redistribution of plant residues, defecation, soil aggregate formation, herbivory, and grazing on microorganisms and fungi. Based on recent results, the methods and results found in relation to fauna as well as from fungi and plants are presented. The approaches are outlined, and the significance of these hitherto ignored fluxes is discussed
