    Interacting with Social Media Ads : Effects of Carousel Advertising and Message Type on Health Outcomes

    Carousel advertisements (ads) on social media provide consumers with the opportunity to scroll left and right when reading an ad’s content. Such an interactive advertising format has great potential to elevate consumers’ interactive and engagement experience with ads, which might be further linked with increased advertising effectiveness. The present study sets out to explore the efficacy of carousel advertising for communicating public health issues by considering both media-specific (i.e., noncarousel versus carousel) and message-specific (i.e., statistics versus narrative) characteristics. Through two experiments, we found reading carousel ads increased participants’ control perception, which was positively associated with their message engagement and then favorable ad-related outcomes. Yet, contrary to predictions, the narrative-based carousel ad was found to be no more interactive or engaging than the statistics-based one in affecting perceptual and attitudinal outcomes.     Effect of Vitamin D on the Proliferation and Barrier of Atrophic Vaginal Epithelial Cells

    Atrophic vaginitis is very common in postmenopausal women due to declining estrogen levels. Vitamin D plays an important role in promoting epithelial cell proliferation, migration and adhesion. We established a rat model of ovariectomy (OVX) induced atrophic vaginitis with the aim of investigating the effects of Vitamin D supplementation on the vaginal epithelial barrier. The results showed that ovariectomised rats had significantly higher vaginal pH, reduced Lactobacillus, significantly lower uterine and vaginal weights, and lower vaginal epithelial PCNA, occludin, and E-cadherin mRNA expression compared with sham-operated rats. Vitamin D supplementation could reduce the vaginal pH, promote the proliferation and keratinization of vaginal epithelial cells, enhance the expression of PCNA mRNA in vaginal tissues, and improve the vaginal and uterine atrophy. Vitamin D can also increase the expression of E-cadherin and occludin proteins in vaginal tissues, maintain the integrity of the vaginal epithelium, increase the number of Lactobacillus, and reduce pathogenic bacterial infections. In vitro experiments demonstrated that 1,25(OH)2D3 could promote the proliferation and migration of VK2/E6E7 vaginal epithelial cells and increase the expression of E-cadherin protein. In conclusion, we demonstrated that Vitamin D can regulate the expression of vaginal epithelial tight junction proteins, promotes cell proliferation, and improves vaginal atrophy due to estrogen deficiency

    Development and Functional Analysis of Lithocarpus polystachyus (wall.) Rehd Black Tea

    This study examined the development conditions and functional properties of a novel compound tea Lithocarpus polystachyus (wall.) Rehd (L. polystachyus, LPR) black tea (LPRBT). The compound tea was developed by fermentation using fresh leaves (Camellia sinensis cv. Qianmei 601) as the main raw material with LPR powder as an additive. Based on the single factor and orthogonal tests with sensory scores as indicators, a withered leaves–LPR powder mass ratio of 9:1 with a 6 h fermentation time was determined to be the production condition of LPRBT with a sensory score of 89.09. In addition, phlorizin content, anti-oxidation function, hypoglycemic function, and tumor suppressor effect of LPRBT were measured. The results demonstrated that LPRBT phlorizin content was significantly higher than apple. It also showed that the equivalent 2,2′-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) radical clearance rate with Vitamin C (Vc) and the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical clearance rate was 81% of Vc. Both hydroxyl and superoxide anion radical clearance increased with the increase in LPRBT amount. LPRBT also showed a good inhibitory effect on α-glucosidase and α-amylase, indicating certain hypoglycemic activity. Moreover, it inhibited the growth of HeLa and A549 cancer cells showing tumor suppressor activity. This study provides a reference for the development and application of LPR food products

    Long-Term Variations of Meteorological and Precursor Influences on Ground Ozone Concentrations in Jinan, North China Plain, from 2010 to 2020

    Ground-level ozone (O3) pollution in the North China Plain has become a serious environmental problem over the last few decades. The influence of anthropogenic emissions and meteorological conditions on ozone trends have become the focus of widespread research. We studied the long-term ozone trends at urban and suburban sites in a typical city in North China and quantified the contributions of anthropogenic and meteorological factors. The results show that urban O3 increased and suburban O3 decreased from 2010 to 2020. The annual 90th percentile of the maximum daily 8-h average of ozone in urban areas increased by 3.01 μgm−3year−1 and, in suburban areas, it decreased by 3.74 μgm−3year−1. In contrast to the meteorological contributions, anthropogenic impacts are the decisive reason for the different ozone trends in urban and suburban areas. The rapid decline in nitrogen oxides (NOX) in urban and suburban areas has had various effects. In urban areas, this leads to a weaker titration of NOX and enhanced O3 formation, while in suburban areas, this weakens the photochemical production of O3. Sensitivity analysis shows that the O3 formation regime is in a transition state in both the urban and suburban areas. However, this tends to be limited to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in urban areas and to NOX in suburban areas. One reasonable approach to controlling ozone pollution should be to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions while strengthening the control of VOCs

    Causes of Summer Ozone Pollution Events in Jinan, East China: Local Photochemical Formation or Regional Transport?

    Simultaneous measurements of atmospheric volatile organic compounds (VOCs), conventional gases and meteorological parameters were performed at an urban site in Jinan, East China, in June 2021 to explore the formation and evolution mechanisms of summertime ozone (O3) pollution events. O3 Episode Ⅰ, O3 Episode II, and non-O3 episodes were identified based on the China Ambient Air Quality Standards and the differences in precursor concentrations. The O3 concentrations in Episode I and Episode II were 145.4 μg/m3 and 166.4 μg/m3, respectively, which were significantly higher than that in non-O3 episode (90 μg/m3). For O3 precursors, VOCs and NOx concentrations increased by 48% and 34% in Episode I, and decreased by 21% and 27% in Episode II compared to non-O3 episode days. The analysis of the m,p-xylene to ethylbenzene ratio (X/E) and OH exposure demonstrated that the aging of the air masses in Episode II was significantly higher than the other two episodes, and the differences could not be explained by localized photochemical consumption. Therefore, we speculate that the high O3 concentrations in Episode II were driven by the regional transport of O3 and its precursors. Backward trajectory simulations indicated that the air masses during Episode II were concentrated from the south. In contrast, the combination of high precursor concentrations and favorable meteorological conditions (high temperatures and low humidity) led to an excess of O3 in Episode I. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) model results indicated that increased emissions from combustion and gasoline vehicle exhausts contributed to the elevated concentrations of VOCs in Episode I, and solvent usage may be an important contributor to O3 formation. The results of this study emphasize the importance of strengthening regional joint control of O3 and its precursors with neighboring cities, especially in the south, which is crucial for Jinan to mitigate O3 pollution
