Measurements of Atmospheric Antiprotons
We measured atmospheric antiproton spectra in the energy range 0.2 to 3.4
GeV, at sea level and at balloon altitude in the atmospheric depth range 4.5 to
26 g/cm^2. The observed energy spectra, including our previous measurements at
mountain altitude, were compared with estimated spectra calculated on various
assumptions regarding the energy distribution of antiprotons that interacted
with air nuclei.Comment: Accepted for publication in PL
A direct numerical simulation method for complex modulus of particle dispersions
We report an extension of the smoothed profile method (SPM)[Y. Nakayama, K.
Kim, and R. Yamamoto, Eur. Phys. J. E {\bf 26}, 361(2008)], a direct numerical
simulation method for calculating the complex modulus of the dispersion of
particles, in which we introduce a temporally oscillatory external force into
the system. The validity of the method was examined by evaluating the storage
and loss moduli of a system composed of identical
spherical particles dispersed in an incompressible Newtonian host fluid at
volume fractions of , 0.41, and 0.51. The moduli were evaluated at
several frequencies of shear flow; the shear flow used here has a zigzag
profile, as is consistent with the usual periodic boundary conditions
Measurements of Primary and Atmospheric Cosmic-Ray Spectra with the BESS-TeV Spectrometer
Primary and atmospheric cosmic-ray spectra were precisely measured with the
BESS-TeV spectrometer. The spectrometer was upgraded from BESS-98 to achieve
seven times higher resolution in momentum measurement. We report absolute
fluxes of primary protons and helium nuclei in the energy ranges, 1-540 GeV and
1-250 GeV/n, respectively, and absolute flux of atmospheric muons in the
momentum range 0.6-400 GeV/c.Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables, Submitted to Phys. Lett.
The Haldane gap for the S=2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain revisited
Using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique, we carry out
a large scale numerical calculation for the S=2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg
chain. Performing systematic scaling analysis for both the chain length and
the number of optimal states kept in the iterations , the Haldane gap
is estimated accurately as . Our systematic
analysis for the S=2 chains not only ends the controversies arising from
various DMRG calculations and Monte Carlo simulations, but also sheds light on
how to obtain reliable results from the DMRG calculations for other complicated
systems.Comment: 4 pages and 1 figur
Measurement of cosmic-ray low-energy antiproton spectrum with the first BESS-Polar Antarctic flight
The BESS-Polar spectrometer had its first successful balloon flight over
Antarctica in December 2004. During the 8.5-day long-duration flight, almost
0.9 billion events were recorded and 1,520 antiprotons were detected in the
energy range 0.1-4.2 GeV. In this paper, we report the antiproton spectrum
obtained, discuss the origin of cosmic-ray antiprotons, and use antiprotons to
probe the effect of charge sign dependent drift in the solar modulation.Comment: 18 pages, 1 table, 5 figures, submitted to Physics Letters
Simulating (electro)hydrodynamic effects in colloidal dispersions: smoothed profile method
Previously, we have proposed a direct simulation scheme for colloidal
dispersions in a Newtonian solvent [Phys.Rev.E 71,036707 (2005)]. An improved
formulation called the ``Smoothed Profile (SP) method'' is presented here in
which simultaneous time-marching is used for the host fluid and colloids. The
SP method is a direct numerical simulation of particulate flows and provides a
coupling scheme between the continuum fluid dynamics and rigid-body dynamics
through utilization of a smoothed profile for the colloidal particles.
Moreover, the improved formulation includes an extension to incorporate
multi-component fluids, allowing systems such as charged colloids in
electrolyte solutions to be studied. The dynamics of the colloidal dispersions
are solved with the same computational cost as required for solving
non-particulate flows. Numerical results which assess the hydrodynamic
interactions of colloidal dispersions are presented to validate the SP method.
The SP method is not restricted to particular constitutive models of the host
fluids and can hence be applied to colloidal dispersions in complex fluids
Novel Weak Decays in Doubly Strange Systems
The strangeness-changing () weak baryon-baryon interaction is
studied through the nonmesonic weak decay of double- hypernuclei.
Besides the usual nucleon-induced decay we discuss novel
hyperon-induced decay modes and . These reactions provide unique access to the exotic
K and K vertices which place new constraints
on Chiral Pertubation Theory (PT) in the weak SU(3) sector. Within a
meson-exchange framework, we use the pseudoscalar octet for the
long-range part while parametrizing the short-range part through the vector
mesons . Realistic baryon-baryon forces for the and
-2 sectors account for the strong interaction in the initial and final states.
For He the new hyperon-induced decay modes account for up
to 4% of the total nonmesonic decay rate. Predictions are made for all possible
nonmesonic decay modes.Comment: 19 pages, 2 ps figures, 9 table
The Structure of Nanoscale Polaron Correlations in La1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7
A system of strongly-interacting electron-lattice polarons can exhibit charge
and orbital order at sufficiently high polaron concentrations. In this study,
the structure of short-range polaron correlations in the layered colossal
magnetoresistive perovskite manganite, La1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7, has been determined by
a crystallographic analysis of broad satellite maxima observed in diffuse X-ray
and neutron scattering data. The resulting q=(0.3,0,1) modulation is a
longitudinal octahedral-stretch mode, consistent with an incommensurate
Jahn-Teller-coupled charge-density-wave fluctuations, that implies an unusual
orbital-stripe pattern parallel to the directions.Comment: Reformatted with RevTe
