    Domain-specific ChatBots for Science using Embeddings

    Large language models (LLMs) have emerged as powerful machine-learning systems capable of handling a myriad of tasks. Tuned versions of these systems have been turned into chatbots that can respond to user queries on a vast diversity of topics, providing informative and creative replies. However, their application to physical science research remains limited owing to their incomplete knowledge in these areas, contrasted with the needs of rigor and sourcing in science domains. Here, we demonstrate how existing methods and software tools can be easily combined to yield a domain-specific chatbot. The system ingests scientific documents in existing formats, and uses text embedding lookup to provide the LLM with domain-specific contextual information when composing its reply. We similarly demonstrate that existing image embedding methods can be used for search and retrieval across publication figures. These results confirm that LLMs are already suitable for use by physical scientists in accelerating their research efforts.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure

    Quarkonium states in a complex-valued potential

    We calculate quarkonium binding energies using a realistic complex-valued potential for both an isotropic and anisotropic quark-gluon plasma. We determine the disassociation temperatures of the ground and first excited states considering both the real and imaginary parts of the binding energy. We show that the effect of momentum-space anisotropy is smaller on the imaginary part of the binding energy than on the real part of the binding energy. In the case that one assumes an isotropic plasma, we find disassociation temperatures for the J/psi, Upsilon and chi_b of 1.6 T_c, 2.8 T_c, and 1.5 T_c, respectively. We find that a finite oblate momentum-space anisotropy increases the disassociation temperature for all states considered and results in a splitting of the p-wave states associated with the chi_b first excited state of bottomonium.Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures; v4: subtraction of V_infinity corrected to only subtract Re[V_infinity

    The Bald Eagle (Halioeetus leucocephalus) was extirpated as a breeding species in Nebraska for most of the 20th Century. Nebraska\u27s first active, successful, modern Bald Eagle nest was near Valley, Douglas County, in 1991 (Farrar 1991). Jorgensen et al. (2010) summarized modern Bald Eagle nesting records in Nebraska from 1950 to 2009. Jorgensen et al. (2010) noted the highest annual count of active nests was 54 in 2007.     Diversity and abundance of butterfly species (Lepidoptera) fauna in Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi forestry nursery, Benue State, Nigeria

    Butterflies belong to one of the most important taxa of insects. Understanding their significance in an ecosystem as an environmental health indicator and pollination of flowering plants is crucial to achieving sustainability and conservation of floral diversity. Owing to habitat destruction due to some anthropogenic activities, butterflies are fast disappearing and at present, their survival is under threat. The study assessed the diversity and abundance of butterfly species in the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi forestry nursery, Nigeria. Line transects were used to survey three habitats within and around the forestry nursery using handheld sweep nets in March and April, 2016. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and One-way analysis of variance. A total of 337 individuals representing 17 butterfly species belonging to 5 families were recorded across the three habitat types. Out of these, members belonging to the family Nymphalidae were the most common with 7 species being recorded accounting for 41.2% of the total species and 26.7% of total number of individuals collected. Species richness, evenness and diversity varied from habitat to habitat and decreased from dry land area to swampy area (D= 2.336 – 1.966), (J= 0.336 – 0.236), (H1= 1.394 – 0.955). There was no significant different in species composition/richness across habitat types at 0.05%. It was recommended that management effort towards conservation be put in place so as to ensure sustenance of butterflies and ecosystem services derived from them, and further exploration of butterfly species be done to update this checklist.Keywords: Butterfly, Species, Forestry Nursery, Diversity, Abundanc

    Testing the diffusion hypothesis as a mechanism of self-healing in Disperse orange 11 doped in PMMA

    In this work, we show that reversible photodegradation of Disperse Orange 11 doped in PMMA is not due to dye diffusion - a common phenomenon observed in many dye-doped polymers. The change in linear absorbance due to photodegradation of the material shows an isobestic point, which is consistent with the formation of a quasi-stable damaged species. Spatially-resolved amplified spontaneous emission and fluorescence, both related to the population density, are measured by scanning the pump beam over a burn mark. A numerical model of the time evolution of the population density due to diffusion is inconsistent with the experimental data suggesting that diffusion is not responsible.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure
