Comparison of the diagnostic value of symmetric dimethylarginine, cystatin C, and creatinine for detection of decreased glomerular filtration rate in dogs

BACKGROUND: Early detection of decreased glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in dogs is challenging. Current methods are insensitive and new biomarkers are required. OBJECTIVE: To compare overall diagnostic performance of serum symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) and serum cystatin C to serum creatinine, for detection of decreased GFR in clinically stable dogs, with or without chronic kidney disease (CKD). ANIMALS: Ninety-seven client-owned dogs: 67 dogs with a diagnosis or suspicion of CKD and 30 healthy dogs were prospectively included. METHODS: Prospective diagnostic accuracy study. All dogs underwent physical examination, systemic arterial blood pressure measurement, urinalysis, hematology and blood biochemistry analysis, cardiac and urinary ultrasound examinations, and scintigraphy for estimation of glomerular filtration rate (mGFR). Frozen serum was used for batch analysis of SDMA and cystatin C. RESULTS: The area under the curve of creatinine, SDMA, and cystatin C for detection of an mGFR <30.8 mL/min/L was 0.98 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.93-1.0), 0.96 (95% CI, 0.91-0.99), and 0.87 (95% CI, 0.79-0.93), respectively. The sensitivity of both creatinine and SDMA at their prespecified cutoffs (115 μmol/L [1.3 mg/dL] and 14 μg/dL) for detection of an abnormal mGFR was 90%. The specificity was 90% for creatinine and 87% for SDMA. When adjusting the cutoff for cystatin C to correspond to a diagnostic sensitivity of 90% (0.49 mg/L), specificity was lower (72%) than that of creatinine and SDMA. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Overall diagnostic performance of creatinine and SDMA for detection of decreased mGFR was similar. Overall diagnostic performance of cystatin C was inferior to both creatinine and SDMA

Experimental Signature of Medium Modifications for rho and omega Mesons in the 12 GeV p + A Reactions

The invariant mass spectra of e+e- pairs produced in 12-GeV proton-induced nuclear reactions are measured at the KEK Proton-Synchrotron. On the low-mass side of the omega meson peak, a significant enhancement over the known hadronic sources has been observed. The mass spectra, including the excess, are well reproduced by a model that takes into account the density dependence of the vector meson mass modification, as theoretically predicted.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, Version accepted for Physical Review Lette

Nuclear mass number dependence of inclusive production of omega and phi mesons in 12 GeV p + A collisions

The inclusive production of omega and phi mesons is studied in the backward region of the interaction of 12 GeV protons with polyethylene, carbon, and copper targets. The mesons are measured in e^+ e^- decay channels. The production cross sections of the mesons are presented as functions of rapidity y and transverse momentum p_T. The nuclear mass number dependences (A dependences) are found to be A^{0.710 +/- 0.021(stat) +/- 0.037(syst)} for omega mesons and A^{0.937 +/- 0.049(stat) +/- 0.018(syst)} for phi mesons in the region of 0.9 < y < 1.7 and p_T < 0.75 GeV/c.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures; typos adde

    Nuclear-matter modification of decay widths in the ϕe+e\phi \to e^{+}e^{-} and ϕK+K\phi \to K^{+}K^{-} channels

The invariant mass spectra of ϕK+K\phi \to K^{+}K^{-} are measured in 12 GeV p+Ap+A reactions in order to search for the in-medium modification of ϕ\phi mesons. The observed K+KK^{+}K^{-} spectra are well reproduced by the relativistic Breit-Wigner function with a combinatorial background shape in three βγ\beta\gamma regions between 1.0 and 3.5. The nuclear mass-number dependence of the yields of the K+KK^{+}K^{-} decay channel is compared to the simultaneously measured e+ee^{+}e^{-} decay channel for carbon and copper targets. We parameterize the production yields as σ(A)=σ0×Aα\sigma (A) = \sigma_0 \times A^\alpha and obtain αϕK+Kαϕe+e\alpha_{\phi\to K^+K^-} - \alpha_{\phi\to e^+e^-} to be 0.14 ±\pm 0.12. Limits are obtained for the partial decay widths of ϕ\phi mesons in nuclear matter.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Transverse momentum and centrality dependence of dihadron correlations in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV: Jet-quenching and the response of partonic matter

Azimuthal angle \Delta\phi correlations are presented for charged hadrons from dijets for 0.4 < p_T < 10 GeV/c in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV. With increasing p_T, the away-side distribution evolves from a broad to a concave shape, then to a convex shape. Comparisons to p+p data suggest that the away-side can be divided into a partially suppressed "head" region centered at Delta\phi ~ \pi, and an enhanced "shoulder" region centered at Delta\phi ~ \pi +/- 1.1. The p_T spectrum for the "head" region softens toward central collisions, consistent with the onset of jet quenching. The spectral slope for the "shoulder" region is independent of centrality and trigger p_T, which offers constraints on energy transport mechanisms and suggests that the "shoulder" region contains the medium response to energetic jets.Comment: 420 authors from 58 institutions, 6 pages, 4 figures.
