    Circadian changes and sex-related differences in fetal heart rate parameters

    BACKGROUND: Previous researchers have studied circadian changes in the fetal heart rate (FHR) on small sample sizes and in a strictly controlled environment. This study was undertaken to investigate these changes during the late second and third trimesters, using a portable fetal electrocardiogram recording device (Monica AN24) in pregnant women in home and hospital environments with unrestricted mobility. METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study of 54 pregnant women with uncomplicated singleton pregnancies between 25 and 40 weeks gestation. FHR recordings were made up to 16 h at home or in the hospital setting in the United Kingdom. FHR data over 90 min periods were averaged and the day (7:00 am-11:00 pm) and night (11:00 pm-7:00 am) data from the same individual were compared. Data were examined for evidence of sex-related differences. RESULTS: During the night, there was a significant reduction in basal heart rate (bFHR) and a significant increase in short term variation (STV) and long term variation (LTV) (P < 0.05). Basal FHR decreased (P < 0.002), whereas LTV increased (P = 0.014) with advancing gestation. Male fetuses showed greater day: night variation than females regardless of gestation (P = 0.014). There was a higher bFHR in fetuses monitored during the day in hospital (P = 0.04). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that there are sex-, environment and time-related differences in the FHR parameters measured. These differences may need to be considered taken when interpreting FHR data

    Superior olivary complex organization and cytoarchitecture may be correlated with function and catarrhine primate phylogeny

    In the mammalian auditory system, the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body and the lateral superior olive (MNTB-LSO system) contribute to binaural intensity processing and lateralization. Localization precision varies with the sound frequencies. As recency of common ancestry with human beings increases, primates have improved low-frequency sensitivity and reduced sensitivity to higher frequencies. The medial part of the MNTB is devoted to higher frequency processing. Thus, its high-frequency-dependent function is nearly lost in humans and its role in binaural processing as part of the contralateral pathway to the LSO remains questionable. Here, Nissl-stained sections of the superior olivary complex of man (Homo sapiens), bonobo (Pan paniscus), chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes), gorilla (Gorilla gorilla), orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus), gibbon (Hylobates lar), and macaque (Macaca fascicularis) were compared to reveal differences and coincidences. From chimpanzees to humans, the size of the LSO decreased, and the MNTB as a compact nucleus nearly disappears. From chimpanzees to humans, the LSO/MNTB ratio increases dramatically too, whereas the LSO/MSO ratio remains 1.1; a finding that probably corresponds to the phylogenetic proximity between the species

    Maternal High Fat Diet Is Associated with Decreased Plasma n–3 Fatty Acids and Fetal Hepatic Apoptosis in Nonhuman Primates

    To begin to understand the contributions of maternal obesity and over-nutrition to human development and the early origins of obesity, we utilized a non-human primate model to investigate the effects of maternal high-fat feeding and obesity on breast milk, maternal and fetal plasma fatty acid composition and fetal hepatic development. While the high-fat diet (HFD) contained equivalent levels of n-3 fatty acids (FA's) and higher levels of n-6 FA's than the control diet (CTR), we found significant decreases in docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and total n-3 FA's in HFD maternal and fetal plasma. Furthermore, the HFD fetal plasma n-6∶n-3 ratio was elevated and was significantly correlated to the maternal plasma n-6∶n-3 ratio and maternal hyperinsulinemia. Hepatic apoptosis was also increased in the HFD fetal liver. Switching HFD females to a CTR diet during a subsequent pregnancy normalized fetal DHA, n-3 FA's and fetal hepatic apoptosis to CTR levels. Breast milk from HFD dams contained lower levels of eicosopentanoic acid (EPA) and DHA and lower levels of total protein than CTR breast milk. This study links chronic maternal consumption of a HFD with fetal hepatic apoptosis and suggests that a potentially pathological maternal fatty acid milieu is replicated in the developing fetal circulation in the nonhuman primate

    An explicit symplectic approach to solving the wave equation in moving media

    Abstract An explicit approach using symplectic time integration in conjunction with traditional finite difference spatial derivatives to solve the wave equation in moving media is presented. A simple operator split of this second order wave equation into two coupled first order equations is performed, allowing these split equations to be solved symplectically. Orders of symplectic time integration ranging from first to fourth along with orders of spatial derivatives ranging from second to sixth are explored. The case of cylindrical acoustic spreading in air under a constant velocity in a 2D square structured domain is considered. The variation of the computed time‐of‐flight, frequency, and wave length are studied with varying grid resolution and the deviations from the analytical solutions are determined. It was found that symplectic time integration interferes with finite difference spatial derivatives higher than second order causing unexpected results. This is actually beneficial for unstructured finite volume tools like OpenFOAM where second order spatial operators are the state‐of‐the art. Cylindrical acoustic spreading is simulated on an unstructured 2D triangle mesh showing that symplectic time integration is not limited to the spatial discretization paradigm and overcomes the numerical diffusion arising with the in‐built numerical methods which hinder wave propagation

    Low birth weight and catch-up growth predict increased adiposity in children and adults. This may be due in part to leptin resistance, as adults who were born small exhibit increased plasma leptin concentration relative to adiposity. Placental restriction (PR), a major cause of intrauterine growth restriction, reduces size at birth and increases feeding activity and adiposity by 6 wk in sheep. We hypothesized that PR would increase plasma leptin concentration and alter its relationship with feeding activity and adiposity in young lambs. Body size, plasma leptin, feeding activity, adiposity, leptin, and leptin receptor gene expression in adipose tissue were measured (12 control, 12 PR). PR reduced size at birth and increased adiposity. Plasma leptin concentration decreased with age, but to a lesser extent after PR and correlated positively with adiposity similarly in control and PR. PR increased plasma leptin concentration and perirenal adipose tissue leptin expression. Feeding activity correlated negatively with plasma leptin concentration in controls, but positively after PR. PR increases adipose tissue leptin expression and plasma leptin concentration, however, this increased abundance of peripheral leptin does not inhibit feeding activity (suckling event frequency), suggesting PR programs resistance to appetite and energy balance regulation by leptin, leading to early onset obesity.Miles J.
