    Swimming using surface acoustic waves

    Microactuation of free standing objects in fluids is currently dominated by the rotary propeller, giving rise to a range of potential applications in the military, aeronautic and biomedical fields. Previously, surface acoustic waves (SAWs) have been shown to be of increasing interest in the field of microfluidics, where the refraction of a SAW into a drop of fluid creates a convective flow, a phenomenon generally known as SAW streaming. We now show how SAWs, generated at microelectronic devices, can be used as an efficient method of propulsion actuated by localised fluid streaming. The direction of the force arising from such streaming is optimal when the devices are maintained at the Rayleigh angle. The technique provides propulsion without any moving parts, and, due to the inherent design of the SAW transducer, enables simple control of the direction of travel

    Patient perspectives on an intervention after suicide attempt: The need for patient centred and individualized care.

    Many types of intervention exist for suicide attempters, but they tend not to sufficiently consider patient's views. To identify useful components of a previously evaluated intervention after a suicide attempt from the patient's views and to better understand the process of recovery. Forty-one interviews with suicide attempters were qualitatively analysed. Views of participants (i) on the components of the intervention (nurse case-management, joint crisis plan, meetings with relatives/network and follow-up calls) and (ii) their recovery were explored. The material was analysed by means of thematic analysis with a deductive-inductive approach. Participants valued the human and professional qualities of the nurse case-manager, and appreciated follow-up calls and meetings. However, their views diverged regarding for instance frequency of phone calls, or disclosing information or lack thereof. Interpersonal relationship, suicide attempters' own resources and life changes emerged as core recovery factors. The study highlights the figure of an engaged clinician, with both professional and human commitment, aware that some suicide attempters put more emphasis on their own resources than on delivered health care. Interventions should consider the clinician as the cornerstone of the tailored care valued by suicide attempters

    Collaboration in a multi-user game: impacts of an awareness tool on mutual modeling

    This paper presents an experimental research that focuses on collaboration in a multi-player game. The aim of the project is to study the cognitive impacts of awareness tools, i.e., artifacts that allow users of a collaborative system to be aware of what is going on in the joint virtual environment. The focus is on finding an effect on performance as well as on the representation an individual builds of what his partner knows, plans and intends to do (i.e., mutual modeling). We find that using awareness tools has a significant effect by improving task performance. However, the players who were provided with this tool did not show any improvement of their mutual modeling. Further analysis on contrasted groups revealed that there was an effect of the awareness tool on mutual modeling for players who spent a large amount of time using the too

    SU(3) Breaking in Hyperon Beta Decays: a Prediction for Xi^0 -> Sigma^+ e nu-bar

    On the basis of a previous analysis of hyperon semi-leptonic decay data, a prediction is presented for g_1/f_1 in the Xi^0 -> Sigma^+ e nu-bar beta-decay. The analysis takes into account SU(3) breaking in this sector via the inclusion of mass-driven corrections. A rather precise measurement of the above channel by the KTeV experiment at Fermilab will shortly be available. Since the dependence on the SU(3) parameters, F and D, is identical to that of the neutron beta-decay, such a measurement will provide a rather stringent test of SU(3) and the models used to describe its violation in these decays. The prediction given here for the above decay is g_1/f_1=1.17, which leads to a rate of 0.80 x 10^6 s^-1 and thus a branching fraction of 2.3 x 10^-4.Comment: LaTeX, 7 pages, uses acromake, cite and topcapt packages.     Suicides in Psychiatric Patients: Identifying Health Care-Related Factors through Clinical Practice Reviews.

    The objective of this study was to identify health care-related factors associated with death by suicide in psychiatric patients and to gain insight into clinician views on how to deal with suicidality. The study material derived from a clinician committee in a psychiatric department reviewing every outpatient and inpatient suicide in a standardized way. Reports' conclusions and corresponding plenary discussion minutes regarding 94 suicides were analyzed using inductive thematic content analysis. Health care-related factors were categorized into 4 themes: patient evaluation, patient management, clinician training, and involvement of relevant non-clinical partners. Clinician views on the themes were expressed through statements (i) promoting or restricting an aspect of care (here called recommendations), which mainly followed existing guidelines and were consensual and (ii) without precise indication (here called comments), which departed from mainstream opinions or addressed topics not covered by existing policy. Involvement of non-clinical partners emerged as a new key issue for suicide prevention in psychiatric departments and should be openly discussed with patients. Clinicians preferred balanced conclusions when they reviewed suicide cases

    Predictive modeling of die filling of the pharmaceutical granules using the flexible neural tree

    In this work, a computational intelligence (CI) technique named flexible neural tree (FNT) was developed to predict die filling performance of pharmaceutical granules and to identify significant die filling process variables. FNT resembles feedforward neural network, which creates a tree-like structure by using genetic programming. To improve accuracy, FNT parameters were optimized by using differential evolution algorithm. The performance of the FNT-based CI model was evaluated and compared with other CI techniques: multilayer perceptron, Gaussian process regression, and reduced error pruning tree. The accuracy of the CI model was evaluated experimentally using die filling as a case study. The die filling experiments were performed using a model shoe system and three different grades of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) powders (MCC PH 101, MCC PH 102, and MCC DG). The feed powders were roll-compacted and milled into granules. The granules were then sieved into samples of various size classes. The mass of granules deposited into the die at different shoe speeds was measured. From these experiments, a dataset consisting true density, mean diameter (d50), granule size, and shoe speed as the inputs and the deposited mass as the output was generated. Cross-validation (CV) methods such as 10FCV and 5x2FCV were applied to develop and to validate the predictive models. It was found that the FNT-based CI model (for both CV methods) performed much better than other CI models. Additionally, it was observed that process variables such as the granule size and the shoe speed had a higher impact on the predictability than that of the powder property such as d50. Furthermore, validation of model prediction with experimental data showed that the die filling behavior of coarse granules could be better predicted than that of fine granules

    Stable isotope characterization of pedogenic and lacustrine carbonates from the Chinese Tian Shan: constraints on the Mesozoic - Lower Cenozoic palaeo-environmental evolution

    International audienceIn the Mesozoic–Cenozoic continental deposits of the Tian Shan area, two main levels containing pedogenic carbonates have been identified on both the southern and northern foothills of the range: one in the Upper Jurassic series and one in the Upper Cretaceous–Lower Palaeocene series. In order to reconstruct the palaeoenvironmental and palaeotopographic characteristics of the Tian Shan area during these two periods, we measured the oxygen and carbon isotope composition of these pedogenic carbonates (calcrete and nodules). The stable isotope compositions are homogeneous: most δ18O values are between 21 and 25‰ and most δ13C values are between −4 and −6‰. No distinction can be made between the calcrete and nodule isotopic compositions. The constancy of isotopic values across the Tian Shan is evidence of a development of these calcification features in similar palaeoenvironmental conditions. The main inference is that no significant relief existed in that area at the Cretaceous−Palaeogene boundary, implying that most of the present relief developed later, during the Cenozoic. In addition to the pedogenic carbonates, few beds of limestones interstratified in the Jurassic series of the southern foothills display oxygen and carbon isotope compositions typical of lacustrine carbonates, ruling out brackish water incursion at that period in the regio

    In Switzerland and elsewhere, many psychological support hotlines were set up during the acute phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. Specialists in psychological first aid, in charge of developing and managing these hotlines, had to face an unknown situation, very different from the disasters for which they prepare themselves. Since the pandemic and the associated physical distancing were a potential threat to social cohesion, one could make the hypothesis that, by setting up hotlines, these professionals sought to reintroduce a form of proximity and to care for and cultivate the social connections among people. The pressure, feelings of emergency, anxious anticipation and expectation of the political authorities and the population may have favoured the development of these structures. Other factors certainly also played a role, such as the need to be useful and to exist as professional, or the need to act in order to reduce anxiety related to the pandemic. Altogether, these hotlines were little used, and their usefulness may be questioned. Similar phenomena have been observed - especially in the sanitary domain - with a multiplication of new offers, not always adjusted to specific identified needs, while health care services were on the same time under-used. Our observations plead against emergency responses in crisis situations and for reflecting on the measures to be put in place rather than to "act" them
