    Intergenerational Associations of Adverse Birth Outcomes: A Surveillance Report

    Nebraska births between 1995 and 2005 were followed until 2018 to look for intergenerational associations of low birth weight (LBW) and preterm birth (PTB). Results from generalized estimating equations revealed that mothers born LBW preterm were more likely to deliver LBW (adjusted OR 1.94, 95% CI 1.39–2.71) or preterm (adjusted OR 1.65, 95% CI 1.20–2.27) than mothers born with normal weight or at term. In addition, mothers who had an LBW sibling were 44% more likely to have an LBW infant (OR 1.44, 95% CI 1.04–2.00). A consistent finding was also observed for mothers who had a PTB sibling (OR 1.47, 95% CI 1.10–1.95). Mothers who were LBW at birth or had any LBW siblings, especially two or more siblings, were more likely to repeat this adverse birth outcome.     Longitudinal associations of concurrent falls and fear of falling with functional limitations differ by living alone or not

    BackgroundFalls and fear of falling (FOF) are independent risk factors for functional limitations in older adults. However, the combined effect of falls and FOF on functional limitations and the moderating role of living alone or not is unclear. We aimed to examine (1) the independent and combined effect of falls and FOF on functional limitations in older adults and (2) whether living alone moderates these associations.MethodsWe used data from the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS) and included 5,950 U.S. community-dwelling older adults aged 65 and older from Round 1 (Year 2011) and Round 2 (Year 2012). Falls and FOF were ascertained by asking participants whether they had any falls in the last year and whether they had worried about falling in the previous month at R1. Assessed functional limitations included any difficulties with mobility, self-care, or household activities at R2. Poisson regression models were used to examine the longitudinal associations of falls and FOF with functional limitations and the moderation effects of baseline living alone.ResultsOf the 5,950 participants, 16.3% had falls only; 14.3% had FOF only; 14.3% had both, and 55.1% had neither at baseline. In the adjusted model, those who experienced concurrent falls and FOF in R1 had a higher risk of functional limitations at R2 than those with neither (Mobility: Incidence risk ratio [IRR] = 1.34, 95% CI: 1.24–1.45; Self-care: IRR = 1.18, 95% CI: 1.11–1.26; Household: IRR = 1.20, 95% CI: 1.11–1.30). Moreover, living alone significantly moderated the longitudinal associations of concurrent falls and FOF with mobility activity limitations.ConclusionThe findings suggest that strategies to improve falls and FOF together could potentially help prevent functional limitations. Older adults who live with others and have falls or FOF should receive interventions to promote their mobility activities

    Variants in the fetal genome near pro-inflammatory cytokine genes on 2q13 associate with gestational duration

    The duration of pregnancy is influenced by fetal and maternal genetic and non-genetic factors. Here we report a fetal genome-wide association meta-analysis of gestational duration, and early preterm, preterm, and postterm birth in 84,689 infants. One locus on chromosome 2q13 is associated with gestational duration; the association is replicated in 9,291 additional infants (combined P= 3.96 x 10(-14)). Analysis of 15,588 mother-child pairs shows that the association is driven by fetal rather than maternal genotype. Functional experiments show that the lead SNP, rs7594852, alters the binding of the HIC1 transcriptional repressor. Genes at the locus include several interleukin 1 family members with roles in pro-inflammatory pathways that are central to the process of parturition. Further understanding of the underlying mechanisms will be of great public health importance, since giving birth either before or after the window of term gestation is associated with increased morbidity and mortality.Peer reviewe

    Effects of Anacetrapib in Patients with Atherosclerotic Vascular Disease

    BACKGROUND: Patients with atherosclerotic vascular disease remain at high risk for cardiovascular events despite effective statin-based treatment of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels. The inhibition of cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) by anacetrapib reduces LDL cholesterol levels and increases high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels. However, trials of other CETP inhibitors have shown neutral or adverse effects on cardiovascular outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 30,449 adults with atherosclerotic vascular disease who were receiving intensive atorvastatin therapy and who had a mean LDL cholesterol level of 61 mg per deciliter (1.58 mmol per liter), a mean non-HDL cholesterol level of 92 mg per deciliter (2.38 mmol per liter), and a mean HDL cholesterol level of 40 mg per deciliter (1.03 mmol per liter). The patients were assigned to receive either 100 mg of anacetrapib once daily (15,225 patients) or matching placebo (15,224 patients). The primary outcome was the first major coronary event, a composite of coronary death, myocardial infarction, or coronary revascularization. RESULTS: During the median follow-up period of 4.1 years, the primary outcome occurred in significantly fewer patients in the anacetrapib group than in the placebo group (1640 of 15,225 patients [10.8%] vs. 1803 of 15,224 patients [11.8%]; rate ratio, 0.91; 95% confidence interval, 0.85 to 0.97; P=0.004). The relative difference in risk was similar across multiple prespecified subgroups. At the trial midpoint, the mean level of HDL cholesterol was higher by 43 mg per deciliter (1.12 mmol per liter) in the anacetrapib group than in the placebo group (a relative difference of 104%), and the mean level of non-HDL cholesterol was lower by 17 mg per deciliter (0.44 mmol per liter), a relative difference of -18%. There were no significant between-group differences in the risk of death, cancer, or other serious adverse events. CONCLUSIONS: Among patients with atherosclerotic vascular disease who were receiving intensive statin therapy, the use of anacetrapib resulted in a lower incidence of major coronary events than the use of placebo.     Does Air Pollution Impact Fiscal Sustainability? Evidence from Chinese Cities

    Fiscal sustainability is an issue of great concern for governments globally and air pollution control has become an important factor affecting fiscal sustainability. This study aims to examine the impact of air pollution on fiscal sustainability in the short and long run. We conducted an empirical analysis based on air pollution and local government debt data on China’s prefecture-level cities in 2014–2019, using regression discontinuity design (RDD) and a panel data model. The results show that air pollution reduces the debt burden of governments in the short run. However, in the long run, addressing the negative impacts of air pollution adds to the debt burden of local governments, hindering fiscal sustainability. Fiscal freedom and the level of public services significantly moderate the negative impact of air pollution on fiscal sustainability. A higher level of fiscal freedom generally indicates a greater incentive for local governments to raise pollutant emission standards, strengthen the construction of green infrastructure, and subsidize green enterprises. Furthermore, a higher level of public services reflects better infrastructure and higher levels of investment in environmental protection, which help to reduce the negative impact of air pollution. The governments are suggested to take measures to effectively control air pollution, so as to enhance fiscal stability in the long run

    Defective Graphene Effects on Primary Displacement Damage and He Diffusion at a Ni–Graphene Interface: Molecular Dynamics Simulations

    Ni–graphene nanocomposites with high-density interfaces have enormous potential as irradiation-tolerant materials applied in Gen-IV reactors. Nevertheless, the mechanism wherein the intrinsic and/or irradiation-induced defects of graphene affect the irradiation tolerance of the composites remains poorly understood. Here, we investigate the effects of the two types of defective graphene on the displacement damage and He diffusion of the composites, respectively, using atomistic simulations. The introduction of the intrinsic defects of graphene has a significant effect on the Ni lattice structure near the Ni–graphene interface, especially showing that after displacement cascades, the number of defects gradually increases with the increase in graphene-defective size due to the formation and growth of stacking fault tetrahedra. The existence of the irradiation-induced defects of graphene does not diminish the ability of the interface to trap He atoms/clusters and even may be maintained or improved, mainly reflected in the fact that many isolated He atoms and small clusters can gradually migrate toward the interface and the fraction of He within the interface is up to 37.72% after 1 ns. This study provides an important insight into the understanding of the association relationships of defective graphene with the irradiation tolerance of composites

    Ser/Thr Protein Kinase SpkI Affects Photosynthetic Efficiency in <i>Synechocystis</i> sp. PCC 6803 upon Salt Stress

    High salinity is a common environmental factor that limits productivity and growth for photosynthetic organisms. Here, we identified a mutant defected in gene sll1770, which encodes a Ser/Thr protein kinase SpkI, with a significantly low maximal quantum yield of PSII under high salt condition in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803. Physiological characterization demonstrated that the ΔspkI mutant had normal growth and photosynthesis under control condition. And a significantly higher NPQ capacity was also observed in ΔspkI when grown under control condition. However, when grown under high salt condition, ΔspkI exhibited apparently slower growth as well as decreased net photosynthesis and PSII activity. Western blot analysis demonstrated that the amount of major photosynthetic proteins declined sharply in ΔspkI when cells grown under high salt condition. Redox kinetics measurement suggested that the activities of PSI and cytochrome b6f complex were modified in ΔspkI under high salt condition, which resulted in a more reduced PQ pool in ΔspkI. Chlorophyll fluorescence traces suggested that the OA− reoxidation and state transition was also impaired in ΔspkI under high salt condition. Above all, we propose that Ser/Thr protein kinase SpkI plays a role in maintaining high-effective photosynthesis during high-salt acclimation process in Synechocystis
