Sinorhizobium Meliloti, A Bacterium Lacking The Autoinducer-2 (AI-2) Synthase, Responds To AI-2 Supplied By Other Bacteria
Many bacterial species respond to the quorum-sensing signal autoinducer-2 (AI-2) by regulating different niche-specific genes. Here, we show that Sinorhizobium meliloti, a plant symbiont lacking the gene for the AI-2 synthase, while not capable of producing AI-2 can nonetheless respond to AI-2 produced by other species. We demonstrate that S. meliloti has a periplasmic binding protein that binds AI-2. The crystal structure of this protein (here named SmlsrB) with its ligand reveals that it binds (2R,4S)-2-methyl-2,3,3,4-tetrahydroxytetrahydrofuran (R-THMF), the identical AI-2 isomer recognized by LsrB of Salmonella typhimurium. The gene encoding SmlsrB is in an operon with orthologues of the lsr genes required for AI-2 internalization in enteric bacteria. Accordingly, S. meliloti internalizes exogenous AI-2, and mutants in this operon are defective in AI-2 internalization. S. meliloti does not gain a metabolic benefit from internalizing AI-2, suggesting that AI-2 functions as a signal in S. meliloti. Furthermore, S. meliloti can completely eliminate the AI-2 secreted by Erwinia carotovora, a plant pathogen shown to use AI-2 to regulate virulence. Our findings suggest that S. meliloti is capable of \u27eavesdropping\u27 on the AI-2 signalling of other species and interfering with AI-2-regulated behaviours such as virulence
Tunable entanglement distillation of spatially correlated down-converted photons
We report on a new technique for entanglement distillation of the bipartite
continuous variable state of spatially correlated photons generated in the
spontaneous parametric down-conversion process (SPDC), where tunable
non-Gaussian operations are implemented and the post-processed entanglement is
certified in real-time using a single-photon sensitive electron multiplying CCD
(EMCCD) camera. The local operations are performed using non-Gaussian filters
modulated into a programmable spatial light modulator and, by using the EMCCD
camera for actively recording the probability distributions of the
twin-photons, one has fine control of the Schmidt number of the distilled
state. We show that even simple non-Gaussian filters can be finely tuned to a
~67% net gain of the initial entanglement generated in the SPDC process.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure
Experimental polarization encoded quantum key distribution over optical fibres with real-time continuous birefringence compensation
In this paper we demonstrate an active polarization drift compensation scheme
for optical fibres employed in a quantum key distribution experiment with
polarization encoded qubits. The quantum signals are wavelength multiplexed in
one fibre along with two classical optical side channels that provide the
control information for the polarization compensation scheme. This set-up
allows us to continuously track any polarization change without the need to
interrupt the key exchange. The results obtained show that fast polarization
rotations of the order of 40*pi rad/s are effectively compensated for. We
demonstrate that our set-up allows continuous quantum key distribution even in
a fibre stressed by random polarization fluctuations. Our results pave the way
for Bell-state measurements using only linear optics with parties separated by
long-distance optical fibres
Linking cardiorespiratory fitness classification criteria to early subclinical atherosclerosis in children
It is unclear if cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) can be used as a screening tool for premature changes in carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) in paediatric populations. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was 3-fold: (i) to determine if CRF can be used to screen increased cIMT; (ii) to determine an optimal CRF cut-off to predict increased cIMT; and (iii) to evaluate its ability to predict increased cIMT among children in comparison with existent CRF cut-offs. cIMT was assessed with high-resolution ultrasonography and CRF was determined using a maximal cycle test. Receiver operating characteristic analyses were conducted in boys (n = 211) and girls (n = 202) aged 11-12 years to define the optimal sex-specific CRF cut-off to classify increased cIMT (≥75th percentile). Logistic regression was used to examine the association between the CRF cut-offs with the risk of having an increased cIMT. The optimal CRF cut-offs to predict increased cIMT were 45.81 and 34.46 mL·kg(-1)·min(-1) for boys and girls, respectively. The odds-ratios for having increased cIMT among children who were unfit was up to 2.8 times the odds among those who were fit (95% confidence interval: 1.40-5.53). Considering current CRF cut-offs, only those suggested by Adegboye et al. 2011. (Br. J. Sports Med. 45(9): 722-728) and Boddy et al. 2012 (PLoS One, 7(9): e45755) were significant in predicting increased cIMT. In conclusion, CRF cut-offs (boys: ≤ 45.8; girls: ≤ 34.5 mL·kg(-1)·min(-1)) are associated with thickening of the arterial wall in 11- to 12-year-old children. Dynamic multifactor hubs interact transiently with sites of active transcription in Drosophila embryos.
The regulation of transcription requires the coordination of numerous activities on DNA, yet how transcription factors mediate these activities remains poorly understood. Here, we use lattice light-sheet microscopy to integrate single-molecule and high-speed 4D imaging in developing Drosophila embryos to study the nuclear organization and interactions of the key transcription factors Zelda and Bicoid. In contrast to previous studies suggesting stable, cooperative binding, we show that both factors interact with DNA with surprisingly high off-rates. We find that both factors form dynamic subnuclear hubs, and that Bicoid binding is enriched within Zelda hubs. Remarkably, these hubs are both short lived and interact only transiently with sites of active Bicoid-dependent transcription. Based on our observations, we hypothesize that, beyond simply forming bridges between DNA and the transcription machinery, transcription factors can organize other proteins into hubs that transiently drive multiple activities at their gene targets.Editorial noteThis article has been through an editorial process in which the authors decide how to respond to the issues raised during peer review. Macroscopic behavior of bidisperse suspensions of noncolloidal particles in yield stress fluids
We study both experimentally and theoretically the rheological behavior of
isotropic bidisperse suspensions of noncolloidal particles in yield stress
fluids. We focus on materials in which noncolloidal particles interact with the
suspending fluid only through hydrodynamical interactions. We observe that both
the elastic modulus and yield stress of bidisperse suspensions are lower than
those of monodisperse suspensions of same solid volume fraction. Moreover, we
show that the dimensionless yield stress of such suspensions is linked to their
dimensionless elastic modulus and to their solid volume fraction through the
simple equation of Chateau et al.[J. rheol. 52, 489-506 (2008)]. We also show
that the effect of the particle size heterogeneity can be described by means of
a packing model developed to estimate random loose packing of assemblies of dry
particles. All these observations finally allow us to propose simple closed
form estimates for both the elastic modulus and the yield stress of bidisperse
suspensions: while the elastic modulus is a function of the reduced volume
fraction only, where is the estimated random loose
packing, the yield stress is a function of both the volume fraction and
the reduced volume fraction
Igualdad de género bajo asedio: Percepciones y satisfacción de mujeres en teletrabajo con la distribución del trabajo no remunerado durante el cierre de Covid-19
This study analyses the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the division of domestic work as regards women in opposite-gender relationships, telecommuting and living as a couple, during the first lockdown in Portugal. Quantitative and qualitative data was collected (N=171) to understand women's perceptions of time spent on unpaid work, satisfaction, and main difficulties in this period. Results revealed women's dissatisfaction, especially mothers of underage children, who perceived an increase in caregiving tasks. Women's satisfaction also impacted their perception of the causes for these gender asymmetries. The less satisfied women ascribe gender inequalities mainly to socio-normative factors and gender stereotypes, while the more satisfied women ascribe them to aspects of socialisation and upbringing, as well as innate dispositions that differ between men and women. The trend towards more equality found prior to Covid-19 was not found.Este estudo analisa o impacto da pandemia de Covid-19 na divisão do trabalho
doméstico de mulheres em relações com o sexo oposto, em teletrabalho e a viver em casal,
durante o primeiro confinamento em Portugal. Recolheram-se dados quantitativos e
qualitativos (N = 171) para compreender as perceções das mulheres sobre o tempo gasto em
trabalho não remunerado, a satisfação e as principais dificuldades. Os resultados revelaram
a insatisfação das mulheres, especialmente mães de crianças menores, que viram aumentar
as tarefas de prestação de cuidados. A satisfação das mulheres também mostrou diferenças
na perceção das causas destas assimetrias de género. As mulheres menos satisfeitas atribuem
as desigualdades de género principalmente a fatores socionormativos e estereótipos de
género, enquanto as mulheres mais satisfeitas as atribuem a aspetos de socialização e educação, bem como a disposições inatas que diferem entre homens e mulheres. A tendência de

Universality in Bacterial Colonies
The emergent spatial patterns generated by growing bacterial colonies have
been the focus of intense study in physics during the last twenty years. Both
experimental and theoretical investigations have made possible a clear
qualitative picture of the different structures that such colonies can exhibit,
depending on the medium on which they are growing. However, there are
relatively few quantitative descriptions of these patterns. In this paper, we
use a mechanistically detailed simulation framework to measure the scaling
exponents associated with the advancing fronts of bacterial colonies on hard
agar substrata, aiming to discern the universality class to which the system
belongs. We show that the universal behavior exhibited by the colonies can be
much richer than previously reported, and we propose the possibility of up to
four different sub-phases within the medium-to-high nutrient concentration
regime. We hypothesize that the quenched disorder that characterizes one of
these sub-phases is an emergent property of the growth and division of bacteria

A review of Quantum Gravity at the Large Hadron Collider
The aim of this article is to review the recent developments in the
phenomenology of quantum gravity at the Large Hadron Collider. We shall pay
special attention to four-dimensional models which are able to lower the
reduced Planck mass to the TeV region and compare them to models with a large
extra-dimensional volume. We then turn our attention to reviewing the emission
of gravitons (massless or massive) at the LHC and to the production of small
