A strategy for emergency treatment of Schistosoma japonicum-infested water
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Schistosomiasis japonica, caused by contact with <it>Schistosoma japonicum </it>cercaria-infested water when washing, bathing or production, remains a major public-health concern in China. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of a suspension concentrate of niclosamide (SCN) on killing cercaria of <it>S. japonicum </it>that float on the water surface, and its toxicity to fish, so as to establish an emergency-treatment intervention for rapidly killing cercaria and eliminating water infectivity.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>At 30 min after spraying 100 mg/L SCN, with niclosamide dosages of 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04 g/m2, the water infectivity reduced significantly and no infectivity was found at 60 min after spraying SCN. The surface of static water was sprayed with 100 mg/L SCN, the peak concentration was found at 0 min, and the solution diffused to site with a water depth of 10 cm after 10 min. 30 min later, SCN diffused to the whole water body, and distributed evenly. After spraying 100 mg/L SCN onto the surface of the water with a volume of(3.14 × 202×50)cm3, with niclosamide dosages of 0.02 g/m2, 96 h later, no death of zebra fish was observed.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>By spraying 100 mg/L SCN, with a niclosamide dosage of 0.02 g/m2 onto the surface of <it>S. japonicum</it>-infested water, infectivity of the water can be eliminated after 30-60 min, and there is no evident toxicity to fish. This cercaria-killing method, as an emergency-treatment intervention for infested water, can be applied in those forecasting and early warning systems for schistosomiasis.</p
Structural and magnetic phase diagram of CeFeAsO1-xFx and its relationship to high-temperature superconductivity
We use neutron scattering to study the structural and magnetic phase
transitions in the iron pnictides CeFeAsO1-xFx as the system is tuned from a
semimetal to a high-transition-temperature (high-Tc) superconductor through
Fluorine (F) doping x. In the undoped state, CeFeAsO develops a structural
lattice distortion followed by a stripe like commensurate antiferromagnetic
order with decreasing temperature. With increasing Fluorine doping, the
structural phase transition decreases gradually while the antiferromagnetic
order is suppressed before the appearance of superconductivity, resulting an
electronic phase diagram remarkably similar to that of the high-Tc copper
oxides. Comparison of the structural evolution of CeFeAsO1-xFx with other
Fe-based superconductors reveals that the effective electronic band width
decreases systematically for materials with higher Tc. The results suggest that
electron correlation effects are important for the mechanism of high-Tc
superconductivity in these Fe pnictides.Comment: 19 pages, 5 figure
Radial Growth of Qilian Juniper on the Northeast Tibetan Plateau and Potential Climate Associations
There is controversy regarding the limiting climatic factor for tree radial growth at the alpine treeline on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau. In this study, we collected 594 increment cores from 331 trees, grouped within four altitude belts spanning the range 3550 to 4020 m.a.s.l. on a single hillside. We have developed four equivalent ring-width chronologies and shown that there are no significant differences in their growth-climate responses during 1956 to 2011 or in their longer-term growth patterns during the period AD 1110–2011. The main climate influence on radial growth is shown to be precipitation variability. Missing ring analysis shows that tree radial growth at the uppermost treeline location is more sensitive to climate variation than that at other elevations, and poor tree radial growth is particularly linked to the occurrence of serious drought events. Hence water limitation, rather than temperature stress, plays the pivotal role in controlling the radial growth of Sabina przewalskii Kom. at the treeline in this region. This finding contradicts any generalisation that tree-ring chronologies from high-elevation treeline environments are mostly indicators of temperature changes
An approach for the identification of targets specific to bone metastasis using cancer genes interactome and gene ontology analysis
Metastasis is one of the most enigmatic aspects of cancer pathogenesis and is
a major cause of cancer-associated mortality. Secondary bone cancer (SBC) is a
complex disease caused by metastasis of tumor cells from their primary site and
is characterized by intricate interplay of molecular interactions.
Identification of targets for multifactorial diseases such as SBC, the most
frequent complication of breast and prostate cancers, is a challenge. Towards
achieving our aim of identification of targets specific to SBC, we constructed
a 'Cancer Genes Network', a representative protein interactome of cancer genes.
Using graph theoretical methods, we obtained a set of key genes that are
relevant for generic mechanisms of cancers and have a role in biological
essentiality. We also compiled a curated dataset of 391 SBC genes from
published literature which serves as a basis of ontological correlates of
secondary bone cancer. Building on these results, we implement a strategy based
on generic cancer genes, SBC genes and gene ontology enrichment method, to
obtain a set of targets that are specific to bone metastasis. Through this
study, we present an approach for probing one of the major complications in
cancers, namely, metastasis. The results on genes that play generic roles in
cancer phenotype, obtained by network analysis of 'Cancer Genes Network', have
broader implications in understanding the role of molecular regulators in
mechanisms of cancers. Specifically, our study provides a set of potential
targets that are of ontological and regulatory relevance to secondary bone
cancer.Comment: 54 pages (19 pages main text; 11 Figures; 26 pages of supplementary

Temporal and spatial analysis of Neural tube defects and detection of geographical factors in Shanxi Province, China
Background: Neural tube defects (NTDs) are congenital birth defects that occur in the central nervous system, and they have the highest incidence among all birth defects. Shanxi Province in China has the world's highest rate of NTDs. Since the 1990s, China's government has worked on many birth defect prevention programs to reduce the occurrence of NTDs, such as pregnancy planning, health education, genetic counseling, antenatal ultrasonography and serological screening. However, the rate of NTDs in Shanxi Province is still higher than the world's average morbidity rate after intervention. In addition, Shanxi Province has abundant coal reserves, and is the largest coal production province in China. The objectives of this study are to determine the temporal and spatial variation of the NTD rate in rural areas of Shanxi Province, China, and identify geographical environmental factors that were associated with NTDs in the risk area. Methods: In this study, Heshun County and Yuanping County in Shanxi Province, which have high incidence of NTDs, were selected as the study areas. Two paired sample T test was used to analyze the changes in the risk of NTDs from the time dimension. Ripley's k function and spatial filtering were combined with geographic information system (GIS) software to study the changes in the risk of NTDs from the spatial dimension. In addition, geographical detectors were used to identify the risk geographical environmental factors of NTDs in the study areas, especially the areas close to the coal sites and main roads. Results: In both Heshun County and Yuanping County, the incidence of NTDs was significantly (P<0.05) reduced after intervention. The results from spatial analysis showed that significant spatial heterogeneity existed in both counties. NTD clusters were still identified in areas close to coal sites and main roads after interventions. This study also revealed that the elevation, fault and soil types always had a larger influence on the incidence of NTDs in our study areas. In addition, distance to the river was a risk factor of NTDs in areas close to the coal sites and main roads. Conclusion: The existing interventions may have played an important role to reduce the incidence of NTDs. However, there is still spatial heterogeneity in both counties after using the traditional intervention methods. The government needs to take more measures to strengthen the environmental restoration to prevent the occurrence of NTDs, especially those areas close to coal sites and main roads. The outcome of this research provides an important theoretical basis and technical support for the government to prevent the occurrence of NTDs
Observation of CR Anisotropy with ARGO-YBJ
The measurement of the anisotropies of cosmic ray arrival direction provides
important informations on the propagation mechanisms and on the identification
of their sources. In this paper we report the observation of anisotropy regions
at different angular scales. In particular, the observation of a possible
anisotropy on scales between 10 and 30
suggests the presence of unknown features of the magnetic fields the charged
cosmic rays propagate through, as well as potential contributions of nearby
sources to the total flux of cosmic rays. Evidence of new weaker few-degree
excesses throughout the sky region R.A. is
reported for the first time.Comment: Talk given at 12th TAUP Conference 2011, 5-9 September 2011, Munich,

Observation of a ppb mass threshoud enhancement in \psi^\prime\to\pi^+\pi^-J/\psi(J/\psi\to\gamma p\bar{p}) decay
The decay channel
is studied using a sample of events collected
by the BESIII experiment at BEPCII. A strong enhancement at threshold is
observed in the invariant mass spectrum. The enhancement can be fit
with an -wave Breit-Wigner resonance function with a resulting peak mass of
and a
narrow width that is at the 90% confidence level.
These results are consistent with published BESII results. These mass and width
values do not match with those of any known meson resonance.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Chinese Physics
Adaptive Lévy Walks in Foraging Fallow Deer
Background: Lévy flights are random walks, the step lengths of which come from probability distributions with heavy power-law tails, such that clusters of short steps are connected by rare long steps. Lévy walks maximise search efficiency of mobile foragers. Recently, several studies raised some concerns about the reliability of the statistical analysis used in previous analyses. Further, it is unclear whether Lévy walks represent adaptive strategies or emergent properties determined by the interaction between foragers and resource distribution. Thus two fundamental questions still need to be addressed: the presence of Lévy walks in the wild and whether or not they represent a form of adaptive behaviour. Methodology/Principal Findings: We studied 235 paths of solitary and clustered (i.e. foraging in group) fallow deer (Dama dama), exploiting the same pasture. We used maximum likelihood estimation for discriminating between a power-tailed distribution and the exponential alternative and rank/frequency plots to discriminate between Lévy walks and composite Brownian walks. We showed that solitary deer perform Lévy searches, while clustered animals did not adopt that strategy. Conclusion/Significance: Our demonstration of the presence of Lévy walks is, at our knowledge, the first available which adopts up-to-date statistical methodologies in a terrestrial mammal. Comparing solitary and clustered deer, we concluded that the Lévy walks of solitary deer represent an adaptation maximising encounter rates with forage resources and not a
One-step fabrication of biocompatible chitosan-coated ZnS and ZnS:Mn2+ quantum dots via a γ-radiation route
Biocompatible chitosan-coated ZnS quantum dots [CS-ZnS QDs] and chitosan-coated ZnS:Mn2+ quantum dots [CS-ZnS:Mn2+ QDs] were successfully fabricated via a convenient one-step γ-radiation route. The as-obtained QDs were around 5 nm in diameter with excellent water-solubility. These QDs emitting strong visible blue or orange light under UV excitation were successfully used as labels for PANC-1 cells. The cell experiments revealed that CS-ZnS and CS-ZnS:Mn2+ QDs showed low cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility, which offered possibilities for further biomedical applications. Moreover, this convenient synthesis strategy could be extended to fabricate other nanoparticles coated with chitosan
