The level of knowledge of high school students from lubelskie voivodeship about performing first aid

Introduction First aid plays a key role in saving human life. It not only prevents the deterioration of the victim's health, but also determines survival. Every year, thousands of people die of various injuries, car accidents and other critical situations. This figure could be significantly lower if the accident witnesses provided first aid to the victims. Material and method Diagnostic survey was selected as the research method, and the research tool was an authorial questionnaire, examining the level of students' knowledge about first aid. It was based on the guidelines of the European Resuscitation Council 2015. The questionnaire consisted of 20 closed single-choice questions and only one of the 4 answers was correct. Myonectin serum concentration changes after short-term physical activity among young, healthy people

Background: Myonectin is a myokine secreted by skeletal muscles in response to physical activity (PhA)in rodents. It was shown that myonectin may be positively associated with insulin resistance parameters.The aim of the study was to evaluate changes in the concentration of myonectin after short-term PhA.Methods: A total of 29 young, healthy volunteers, were included in the study. Each participant completeda life-style questionnaire, underwent a physical examination with anthropometric measurement followedby a treadmill test according to theBruce protocol. Blood samples were collected before and after PhA.An ELISA Assay was used to investigate the myonectin serum level.Results: The myonectin serum level did not change significantly after PhA (0.62[0.14-2.9] vs. 1.08[0.15-2.44] ng/ml; p=0.84). Before PhA the myonectin serum level differed significantly between men and women (respectively: 3.92[2.24-5.30] vs. 0.56[0.15-1.75] ng/ml; p=0.02). Before PhA it had a positive association with weight, BMI, serum creatinine and uremic acid (p < 0.05). The change in the level of myonectin serum after PhA had negative associations with weight, BMI, fasting insulin level and HOMA-IR (p < 0.05).Conclusions: Myonectin serum concentration does not change after short-term physical activity amongyoung, healthy people. Changes in the myonectin serum level after short-term physical activity may beassociated with fasting insulin resistance

Wymiana poglądów objęła również problematykę trwających przemian merytorycznych i reform strukturalnych w niektórych systemach oświatowych

Identification of genetic variants associated with Huntington's disease progression: a genome-wide association study

Background Huntington's disease is caused by a CAG repeat expansion in the huntingtin gene, HTT. Age at onset has been used as a quantitative phenotype in genetic analysis looking for Huntington's disease modifiers, but is hard to define and not always available. Therefore, we aimed to generate a novel measure of disease progression and to identify genetic markers associated with this progression measure. Methods We generated a progression score on the basis of principal component analysis of prospectively acquired longitudinal changes in motor, cognitive, and imaging measures in the 218 indivduals in the TRACK-HD cohort of Huntington's disease gene mutation carriers (data collected 2008–11). We generated a parallel progression score using data from 1773 previously genotyped participants from the European Huntington's Disease Network REGISTRY study of Huntington's disease mutation carriers (data collected 2003–13). We did a genome-wide association analyses in terms of progression for 216 TRACK-HD participants and 1773 REGISTRY participants, then a meta-analysis of these results was undertaken. Findings Longitudinal motor, cognitive, and imaging scores were correlated with each other in TRACK-HD participants, justifying use of a single, cross-domain measure of disease progression in both studies. The TRACK-HD and REGISTRY progression measures were correlated with each other (r=0·674), and with age at onset (TRACK-HD, r=0·315; REGISTRY, r=0·234). The meta-analysis of progression in TRACK-HD and REGISTRY gave a genome-wide significant signal (p=1·12 × 10−10) on chromosome 5 spanning three genes: MSH3, DHFR, and MTRNR2L2. The genes in this locus were associated with progression in TRACK-HD (MSH3 p=2·94 × 10−8 DHFR p=8·37 × 10−7 MTRNR2L2 p=2·15 × 10−9) and to a lesser extent in REGISTRY (MSH3 p=9·36 × 10−4 DHFR p=8·45 × 10−4 MTRNR2L2 p=1·20 × 10−3). The lead single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in TRACK-HD (rs557874766) was genome-wide significant in the meta-analysis (p=1·58 × 10−8), and encodes an aminoacid change (Pro67Ala) in MSH3. In TRACK-HD, each copy of the minor allele at this SNP was associated with a 0·4 units per year (95% CI 0·16–0·66) reduction in the rate of change of the Unified Huntington's Disease Rating Scale (UHDRS) Total Motor Score, and a reduction of 0·12 units per year (95% CI 0·06–0·18) in the rate of change of UHDRS Total Functional Capacity score. These associations remained significant after adjusting for age of onset. Interpretation The multidomain progression measure in TRACK-HD was associated with a functional variant that was genome-wide significant in our meta-analysis. The association in only 216 participants implies that the progression measure is a sensitive reflection of disease burden, that the effect size at this locus is large, or both. Knockout of Msh3 reduces somatic expansion in Huntington's disease mouse models, suggesting this mechanism as an area for future therapeutic investigation

Oficyna Poetów i Malarzy from London (1949-2011)

Niniejszy artykuł stanowi próbę omówienia działalności wydawniczej Krystyny i Czesława Bednarczyków, którzy po zakończeniu II wojny światowej osiedli w Wielkiej Brytanii i założyli emigracyjne wydawnictwo, Oficynę Poetów i Malarzy, oraz drukarnię, The Poets' and Painters' Press. Autorka stara się dowieść, że polskim wydawcom udało się stworzyć nie tylko niezależną, wielozadaniową instytucję życia literackiego, ale również emigracyjne środowisko kulturalne, zrzeszające artystów oraz pisarzy w Wielkiej Brytanii. Ponadto podkreśla ona trudność, jaką napotyka badacz, próbując sklasyfikować edytorskie przedsięwzięcie Bednarczyków.The following paper is an attempt to describe the publishing activity and strategy of Krystyna and Czesław Bednarczyk. They settled down in Great Britain after World War II and founded an émigré publishing house called Oficyna Poetów i Malarzy and a printing company, The Poets' and Painters' Press. The author tries to prove that the publishers managed to create not only the independent, multifunctional institution of Polish literary life but also one of the most prominent cultural centres in the Polish immigrant community which gathered artists and writers. Moreover, she emphasises the difficulties in the classification of their editorial undertaking

Krystyna and Czesław Bednarczyk’s contribution to edition of „Kultura” and „Orzeł Biały” on the turn of the 40s of 20th Century

W oparciu przede wszystkim o źródła archiwalne podjęłam w artykule próbę zwięzłego omówienia udziału Krystyny i Czesława Bednarczyków, założycieli emigracyjnej Oficyny Poetów i Malarzy, w pracach redakcyjnych zespołu paryskiej „Kultury” i londyńskiego „Orła Białego”. Zarówno szczegóły tej współpracy, jak i redaktorskie dokonania debiutujących wydawców poezji nie wzbudziły dotychczas żywszego zainteresowania badaczy życia literackiego emigracji. Tymczasem na początku lat pięćdziesiątych Bednarczykowie zasadniczo wpływali na podniesienie poziomu poetyckiego i artystycznego obu periodyków, publikując gościnnie autorskie całostronicowe kompozycje wierszy i grafik malarzy oraz poetów, których poznali w większości na wojennym szlaku II Korpusu. W „Kulturze” ukazały się one tylko dwa razy (w kwietniu i listopadzie 1950 r.), na łamach „Orła Białego” zaś dziesięć razy (w latach 1950-1951). Uczestnictwo w tworzeniu numerów miesięcznika oraz tygodnika stanowiło dla Bednarczyków szansę nie tylko na redaktorski debiut i edytorską wprawkę, lecz także na reklamę własnego wydawniczego przedsięwzięcia. Zarówno bowiem Jerzy Giedroyc, jak i Ryszard Piestrzyński wspomogli nowo założoną Oficynę Poetów i Malarzy, zamieszczając w kierowanych przez siebie pismach apele, ogłoszenia i artykuły promujące tę inicjatywę. Zatem mimo że opisana współpraca stanowiła dla Bednarczyków dodatkowe i krótkotrwałe zatrudnienie, należy uznać możliwość równoczesnego redagowania działu poetyckiego „Kultury” oraz „Orła Białego” za niemałe ich osiągnięcie i przywrócić temu epizodowi należne mu z tej racji miejsce w literaturze przedmiotu.The article presents a little-known episode from the history of Polish press in exile. Its subject is Krystyna and Czesław Bednarczyk’s editorial cooperation with „Kultura” („Culture”, the most prominent émigré literary magazine of that time) and „Orzeł Biały” („The White Eagle”, the Polish 2nd Corps’ weekly magazine) in the 1950s. The article examines and briefl y describes the archival sources on this topic. They were collected mostly in the research centres for culture of Polish emigration in Maisons-Laffi tte (Literary Institute), Torun (Archives of Polish Emigration) and Cracow (the manuscript collection inherited by the Jagiellonian University through the last will of Krystyna Bednarczyk) and present the Bednarczyk’s contribution to artistic development of both magazines. Czesław and Krystyna Bednarczyk were founders of the publishing house and printing company Ofi cyna Poetów i Malarzy (Poets and Painters’ Press). Analysis of their correspondence, especially with Jerzy Giedroyc and Ryszard Piestrzyński, proves that the cooperation with editorial staffs used to be mutually benefi cial, as „Kultura” and „Orzeł Biały” helped Bednarczyks to promote their own undertaking. Although short, this episode in their biography therefore deserves to be considered as an achievement worth being remembered

Vernian intertextuality in W ou le souvenir d’enfance by Georges Perec.

Niniejsza praca podejmuje zagadnienie intertekstualnych nawiązań do prozy Juliusza Verne’a w projekcie autobiograficznym W ou le souvenir d’enfance Georges’a Perec’a. Poetyka Verne’a, charakterystyczne dla niego zabiegi stylistyczne i topika zaczerpnięta z powieści przygodowych wywarły duży wpływ na warsztat pisarski i świadomość literacką Perec’a. Na przestrzeni omawianego dzieła intertekst verne’owski szczególnie ważną rolę pełni w tej części książki, która przedstawia wydarzenia fikcyjne. Odwołania i aluzje do lektur Perec’a z dzieciństwa pojawiają się nie tylko w opowiadaniu przygodowym, którego narratorem jest Gaspard Winckler, ale również w opisie utopijnej rzeczywistości wyspy W. Dzięki przywołaniu motywów verne’owskich – np. zatonięcia, sieroctwa i utopii – Perec’owi udaje się stworzyć nowatorską autobiografię fikcjonalną.This dissertation examines a problem of intertextual references to Jules Verne in the autobiographical project W ou le souvenir d’enfance by Georges Perec. The influence of Verne (his manner of writing and motives characteristic for an adventure novel) affected Perec’s own style and literary identity. In W ou le souvenir d’enfance, the Vernian intertext has the most important meaning in a fictional section of the book. Quotations and allusions connected with the books Perec read in childhood appear not only in the adventure story narrated by Gaspard Winckler, but also in the description of utopian reality of the island W. Referring to the Vernian motives – e.g. sinking, orphanhood and Utopia – Perec creates an innovative “fictional autobiography”.Ce mémoire de maîtrise est une étude centrée sur l’intertextualité vernienne dans le projet autobiographique de Georges Perec s’intitulant W ou le souvenir d’enfance. La poétique de Jules Verne, ses procédés d’écriture, les topoï fournis par ses romans d’aventures, ont exercé une grande influence sur la formation littéraire de Perec. L’intertexte vernien joue un rôle particulier dans le récit fictionnel de l’œuvre perecquienne qui met en jeu les motifs empruntés à l’univers romanesque de Verne. Les allusions aux lectures enfantines apparaissent soit en filigrane, soit de façon manifeste, non seulement dans le récit d’aventures dont le narrateur est Gaspard Winckler, mais aussi dans la description de l’île W. En privilégiant les motifs de naufrage, d’orphelinat, d’utopie, Perec parvient à créer une sorte d’autobiographie fictionnelle

Implementation of the European Union policies into Polish copyright law. Selected issues

Polska, jako państwo członkowskie, ma obowiązek wdrożenia dyrektyw obowiązujących w Unii Europejskiej i harmonizacji rodzimego ustawodawstwa ze wspólnotowymi rozwiązaniami. Niniejsza praca omawia wybrane regulacje unijne dotyczące prawa autorskiego i – szerzej – rynku książki. Przedstawione zostały diagnozy niektórych problemów związanych z implementacją standardów unijnych oraz inicjatywy mające na celu zniwelowanie rozbieżności między prawem wspólnotowym a polskim. W pracy zaprezentowano również przykłady europejskich strategii funkcjonujących już w państwach członkowskich oraz polskich instytucji, którym powierzono zadanie przeniesienia na rodzimy grunt rozwiązań europejskich.As a Member State, Poland is obliged to implement the European Union directives and to harmonise national legislation with the Community policies. This dissertation presents selected EU regulations concerning copyright law and the publishing market. The author not only discusses the diagnoses of some problems connected with adaptation of the Polish law system to European standards, but also describes initiatives intended to solve these problems. In the thesis there are given the examples of European strategies already being in force in the Member States and of institutions implementing the Community solutions in Poland
