The Herts and Minds study: feasibility of a randomised controlled trial of Mentalizationbased Treatment versus usual care to support the wellbeing of children in foster care

Mentalization-based therapy (MBT) focuses on supporting the carer-child relationship by promoting reflective capacity. This study examined the feasibility and acceptability of an RCT of MBT, delivered in a family-format, for children who are in foster care in the UK. Method: Herts and Minds was a phase II, blinded feasibility RCT with follow-up of at 12 and 24 weeks post-randomisation. Participants were children (age 5-16) in foster care referred to a targeted mental health service, who had some level of difficulty as identified by the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Aims were to assess: the feasibility of recruitment processes and study uptake; capacity to train mental health practitioners to deliver MBT to an acceptable level of treatment integrity; establish acceptability and credibility of MBT as an intervention for children in foster care; establish feasibility and acceptability to participants of conducting an RCT; and estimate the likely treatment efficacy effect size. Participants were randomly allocated to either MBT (n = 15) or Usual Clinical Care (UCC) (n = 21) individually or in sibling groups. A range of qualitative and quantitative data was gathered to assess feasibility. Results: Feasibility was established with regard to: capacity to recruit participants to a study; capacity to train mental health practitioners to deliver MBT to an acceptable level of treatment integrity; acceptability and credibility of MBT; and feasibility and acceptability to participants of conducting an RCT. A number of issues made it difficult to estimate a likely treatment efficacy effect size. Conclusion: With modifications, it is feasible to run an RCT of MBT for children in foster care. Both the therapy and research design were acceptable to participants, but modifications may be needed regarding both the timing of assessments and the identification of appropriate primary outcome measures. Given the lack of evidenced based therapies for this population, such a trial would be a significant contribution to the field. Findings may be useful for other groups planning clinical trials of psychological therapies for children in foster care. Trial registration: ISRCTN 90349442. Reference curves for a fitness battery developed for children ages 5-12 years in England
Purpose: Reference curves have already been created for a variety of different physical testing batteries across a number of countries. Due to results differing between countries for the same sex and age, it is important that reference curves are created specific for each country. Therefore, the aim of this study was to provide reference curves for five different fitness tests that assess the core components of health related fitness within children in England. Method: Following institutional ethics approval, parental informed consent and child assent was obtained for a total of 39,199 children aged between 5 and 12 years completed tests for explosive power, agility, hand eye coordination, lower body strength and upper body strength. To calculate reference values Generalised Additive Models for Location, Scale and Shape (GAMLSS) were used.
Results: Reference curves and centiles show differences in performance levels of the fitness tests between sex and age groups. These reference curves and centiles provide age and sex comparisons to enable progress monitoring of children's physical fitness competence within England and comparisons to other countries. Conclusion: Girls are outperformed from a young age group and both upper and lower body strength decreases are seen at ages nine and ten. In physical activity and health related fitness interventions, both girls and boys in Key stage two should be targeted to maintain progression and lessen the gender divide
Hydrodynamic View of Wave-Packet Interference: Quantum Caves
Wave-packet interference is investigated within the complex quantum
Hamilton-Jacobi formalism using a hydrodynamic description. Quantum
interference leads to the formation of the topological structure of quantum
caves in space-time Argand plots. These caves consist of the vortical and
stagnation tubes originating from the isosurfaces of the amplitude of the wave
function and its first derivative. Complex quantum trajectories display
counterclockwise helical wrapping around the stagnation tubes and hyperbolic
deflection near the vortical tubes. The string of alternating stagnation and
vortical tubes is sufficient to generate divergent trajectories. Moreover, the
average wrapping time for trajectories and the rotational rate of the nodal
line in the complex plane can be used to define the lifetime for interference

Collisional modelling of the AU Microscopii debris disc
The spatially resolved AU Mic debris disc is among the most famous and
best-studied debris discs. We aim at a comprehensive understanding of the dust
production and the dynamics of the disc objects with in depth collisional
modelling including stellar radiative and corpuscular forces. Our models are
compared to a suite of observational data for thermal and scattered light
emission, ranging from the ALMA radial surface brightness profile at 1.3mm to
polarisation measurements in the visible. Most of the data can be reproduced
with a planetesimal belt having an outer edge at around 40au and subsequent
inward transport of dust by stellar winds. A low dynamical excitation of the
planetesimals with eccentricities up to 0.03 is preferred. The radial width of
the planetesimal belt cannot be constrained tightly. Belts that are 5au and
17au wide, as well as a broad 44au-wide belt are consistent with observations.
All models show surface density profiles increasing with distance from the star
as inferred from observations. The best model is achieved by assuming a stellar
mass loss rate that exceeds the solar one by a factor of 50. While the SED and
the shape of the ALMA profile are well reproduced, the models deviate from the
scattered light data more strongly. The observations show a bluer disc colour
and a lower degree of polarisation for projected distances <40au than predicted
by the models. The problem may be mitigated by irregularly-shaped dust grains
which have scattering properties different from the Mie spheres used. From
tests with a handful of selected dust materials, we derive a preference for
mixtures of silicate, carbon, and ice of moderate porosity. We address the
origin of the unresolved central excess emission detected by ALMA and show that
it cannot stem from an additional inner belt alone. Instead, it should derive,

A target repurposing approach identifies N-myristoyltransferase as a new candidate drug target in filarial nematodes
Myristoylation is a lipid modification involving the addition of a 14-carbon unsaturated fatty acid, myristic acid, to the N-terminal glycine of a subset of proteins, a modification that promotes their binding to cell membranes for varied biological functions. The process is catalyzed by myristoyl-CoA:protein N-myristoyltransferase (NMT), an enzyme which has been validated as a drug target in human cancers, and for infectious diseases caused by fungi, viruses and protozoan parasites. We purified Caenorhabditis elegans and Brugia malayi NMTs as active recombinant proteins and carried out kinetic analyses with their essential fatty acid donor, myristoyl-CoA and peptide substrates. Biochemical and structural analyses both revealed that the nematode enzymes are canonical NMTs, sharing a high degree of conservation with protozoan NMT enzymes. Inhibitory compounds that target NMT in protozoan species inhibited the nematode NMTs with IC50 values of 2.5-10 nM, and were active against B. malayi microfilariae and adult worms at 12.5 µM and 50 µM respectively, and C. elegans (25 µM) in culture. RNA interference and gene deletion in C. elegans further showed that NMT is essential for nematode viability. The effects observed are likely due to disruption of the function of several downstream target proteins. Potential substrates of NMT in B. malayi are predicted using bioinformatic analysis. Our genetic and chemical studies highlight the importance of myristoylation in the synthesis of functional proteins in nematodes and have shown for the first time that NMT is required for viability in parasitic nematodes. These results suggest that targeting NMT could be a valid approach for the development of chemotherapeutic agents against nematode diseases including filariasis
Discovery of the Fomalhaut C debris disc
Fomalhaut is one of the most interesting and well studied nearby stars,
hosting at least one planet, a spectacular debris ring, and two distant
low-mass stellar companions (TW PsA and LP 876-10, a.k.a. Fomalhaut B & C). We
observed both companions with Herschel, and while no disc was detected around
the secondary, TW PsA, we have discovered the second debris disc in the
Fomalhaut system, around LP 876-10. This detection is only the second case of
two debris discs seen in a multiple system, both of which are relatively wide
(3000 AU for HD 223352/40 and 158 kAU [0.77 pc] for Fomalhaut/LP
876-10). The disc is cool (24K) and relatively bright, with a fractional
luminosity , and represents the rare
observation of a debris disc around an M dwarf. Further work should attempt to
find if the presence of two discs in the Fomalhaut system is coincidental,
perhaps simply due to the relatively young system age of 440 Myr, or if the
stellar components have dynamically interacted and the system is even more

Global stability of spacetimes with supersymmetric compactifications
This paper proves the stability, with respect to the evolution determined by the vacuum Einstein equations, of the Cartesian product of high-dimensional Minkowski space with a compact, Ricci-flat Riemannian manifold that admits a spin structure and a nonzero parallel spinor. Such a product includes the example of Calabi-Yau and other special holonomy compactifications, which play a central role in supergravity and string theory. The stability proved in this paper provides a counter example to an instability argument by Penrose

Rotons and Quantum Evaporation from Superfluid 4He
The probability of evaporation induced by and rotons at the
surface of superfluid helium is calculated using time dependent density
functional theory. We consider excitation energies and incident angles such
that phonons do not take part in the scattering process. We predict sizable
evaporation rates, which originate entirely from quantum effects. Results for
the atomic reflectivity and for the probability of the roton change-mode

Planet Signatures in Collisionally Active Debris Discs: scattered light images
Planet perturbations are often invoked as a potential explanation for many
spatial structures that have been imaged in debris discs. So far this issue has
been mostly investigated with collisionless N-body numerical models. We
numerically investigate how the coupled effect of collisions and radiation
pressure can affect the formation and survival of radial and azimutal
structures in a disc perturbed by a planet. We consider two set-ups: a planet
embedded within an extended disc and a planet exterior to an inner debris ring.
We use the DyCoSS code of Thebault(2012) and derive synthetic images of the
system in scattered light. The planet's mass and orbit, as well as the disc's
collisional activity are explored as free parameters.
We find that collisions always significantly damp planet-induced structures.
For the case of an embedded planet, the planet's signature, mostly a density
gap around its radial position, should remain detectable in head-on images if
M_planet > M_Saturn. If the system is seen edge-on, however, inferring the
presence of the planet is much more difficult, although some planet-induced
signatures might be observable under favourable conditions.
For the inner-ring/external-planet case, planetary perturbations cannot
prevent collision-produced small fragments from populating the regions beyond
the ring: The radial luminosity profile exterior to the ring is close to the
one it should have in the absence of the planet. However, a Jovian planet on a
circular orbit leaves precessing azimutal structures that can be used to
indirectly infer its presence. For a planet on an eccentric orbit, the ring is
elliptic and the pericentre glow effect is visible despite of collisions and
radiation pressure, but detecting such features in real discs is not an
