EUV Spectra of the Full Solar Disk: Analysis and Results of the Cosmic Hot Interstellar Plasma Spectrometer (CHIPS)
We analyze EUV spectra of the full solar disk from the Cosmic Hot
Interstellar Plasma Spectrometer (CHIPS) spanning a period of two years. The
observations were obtained via a fortuitous off-axis light path in the 140 --
270 Angstrom passband. The general appearance of the spectra remained
relatively stable over the two-year time period, but did show significant
variations of up to 25% between two sets of Fe lines that show peak emission at
1 MK and 2 MK. The variations occur at a measured period of 27.2 days and are
caused by regions of hotter and cooler plasma rotating into, and out of, the
field of view. The CHIANTI spectral code is employed to determine plasma
temperatures, densities, and emission measures. A set of five isothermal
plasmas fit the full disk spectra well. A 1 -- 2 MK plasma of Fe contributes
85% of the total emission in the CHIPS passband. The standard Differential
Emission Measures (DEMs) supplied with the CHIANTI package do not fit the CHIPS
spectra well as they over-predict emission at temperatures below log(T) = 6.0
and above log(T) = 6.3. The results are important for cross-calibrating TIMED,
SORCE, SOHO/EIT, and CDS/GIS, as well as the recently launched Solar Dynamics
Observatory.Comment: 27 Pages, 13 Figure
Midinfrared third-harmonic generation from macroscopically aligned ultralong single-wall carbon nanotubes
We report the observation of strong third-harmonic generation from a macroscopic array of aligned
ultralong single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs)with intensemidinfrared radiation. Through power-dependent
experiments, we determined the absolute value of the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility !(3) of our
SWCNT film to be 5.53 × 10−12 esu, three orders of magnitude larger than that of the fused silica reference we
used. Taking account of the filling factor of 8.75% for our SWCNT film, we estimate a !(3) of 6.32 × 10−11 esu
for a fully dense film. Furthermore, through polarization-dependent experiments, we extracted all the nonzero
elements of the !(3) tensor, determining the magnitude of the weaker tensor elements to be #1/6 of that of the
dominant !(3)

Electron self-trapping on a nano-circle
We study the self-trapping of quasiparticles (electrons, holes, excitons,
etc) in a molecular chain with the structure of a ring, taking into account the
electron-phonon interaction and the radial and tangential deformations of the
chain. A discrete system of equations is obtained and solved numerically. The
analytical solutions for the wave function of a quasiparticle and for the
molecule displacements that determine the distortion of the ring, are also
obtained and solved in the continuum approximation. The numerical solutions of
the system of discrete nonlinear equations reveals several regimes of
quasiparticle localisation in the chain which depend on the values of the
parameters of the system. It is shown that the transversal deformation of the
chain favours the formation of a soliton.Comment: 43 pages 9 figure
From bound states to resonances: analytic continuation of the wave function
Single-particle resonance parameters and wave functions in spherical and
deformed nuclei are determined through analytic continuation in the potential
strength. In this method, the analyticity of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions
of the Schroedinger equation with respect to the coupling strength is exploited
to analytically continue the bound-state solutions into the positive-energy
region by means of Pade' approximants of the second kind. The method is here
applied to single-particle wave functions of the and
nuclei. A comparison of the results with the direct solution of the
Schroedinger equation shows that the method can be confidently applied also in
coupled-channel situations requiring high numerical accuracy.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure
Functional morphology of the forelimb of Early Miocene caviomorph rodents from Patagonia
Caviomorph rodents (New World Hystricognathi) are represented in the Santa Cruz Formation of Patagonia (Early Miocene, Santacrucian) by four superfamilies. From this unit, excellent cranial and associated postcranial remains of Neoreomys, Eocardia, Schistomys (Cavioidea), Perimys (Chinchilloidea) and Steiromys (Erethizontoidea) are known. To interpret their use of substrate, a comparative description of limb bones (scapula, humerus, radius and ulna) of the five genera was performed within a taxonomic and ecologically diverse sample of extant rodents. Using palaeobiological inferences based on the habits and functional morphology of members of the extant sample, hypotheses were generated for the use of substrate by the Santacrucian taxa. Neoreomys would have had a marked flexo-extension capacity of the humerus and a moderate flexion of the manus. This genus and Eocardia would have had a complete and stabilized forearm extension, with wide stride and moderate extension of the forearm for the latter. Schistomys presents features similar to Eocardia. Perimys would have had strong external rotation of the humerus, moderate flexion of the manus and moderate, complete and stabilized extension of the forearm. Steiromys would have had good pronation/supination capacity, strong internal rotation of the humerus and flexion of the forearm and manus. Neoreomys would have been ambulatory and an occasional runner. Eocardia and Schistomys would have been good runners. Perimys would have been a digger and Steiromys a climber. This morphological disparity reflects a high ecological diversity, compatible with differential use of space during the Santacrucian.Fil: Muñoz, Nahuel Antu. Universidad Nacional de La Plata. Quasi-classical Lie algebras and their contractions
After classifying indecomposable quasi-classical Lie algebras in low
dimension, and showing the existence of non-reductive stable quasi-classical
Lie algebras, we focus on the problem of obtaining sufficient conditions for a
quasi-classical Lie algebras to be the contraction of another quasi-classical
algebra. It is illustrated how this allows to recover the Yang-Mills equations
of a contraction by a limiting process, and how the contractions of an algebra
may generate a parameterized families of Lagrangians for pairwise
non-isomorphic Lie algebras.Comment: 17 pages, 2 Table
Dynamical chiral symmetry breaking by a magnetic field and multi-quark interactions
Catalysis of dynamical symmetry breaking by a constant magnetic field in
(3+1) dimensions is considered. We use the three flavour Nambu -- Jona-Lasinio
type model with 't Hooft and eight-quark interaction terms. It is shown that
the multi-quark interactions introduce new additional features to this
phenomenon: (a) the local minimum of the effective potential catalyzed by the
constant magnetic field is smoothed out with increasing strength of the field
at the characteristic scale H~10^{19} G, (b) the multi-quark forces generate
independently another local minimum associated with a larger dynamical fermion
mass. This state may exist even for multi-quark interactions with a subcritical
set of couplings, and is globally stable with respect to a further increase of
the magnetic field.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, added discussion and references, version to

Contractions, deformations and curvature
The role of curvature in relation with Lie algebra contractions of the
pseudo-ortogonal algebras so(p,q) is fully described by considering some
associated symmetrical homogeneous spaces of constant curvature within a
Cayley-Klein framework. We show that a given Lie algebra contraction can be
interpreted geometrically as the zero-curvature limit of some underlying
homogeneous space with constant curvature. In particular, we study in detail
the contraction process for the three classical Riemannian spaces (spherical,
Euclidean, hyperbolic), three non-relativistic (Newtonian) spacetimes and three
relativistic ((anti-)de Sitter and Minkowskian) spacetimes. Next, from a
different perspective, we make use of quantum deformations of Lie algebras in
order to construct a family of spaces of non-constant curvature that can be
interpreted as deformations of the above nine spaces. In this framework, the
quantum deformation parameter is identified as the parameter that controls the
curvature of such "quantum" spaces.Comment: 17 pages. Based on the talk given in the Oberwolfach workshop:

An integrable discretization of the rational su(2) Gaudin model and related systems
The first part of the present paper is devoted to a systematic construction
of continuous-time finite-dimensional integrable systems arising from the
rational su(2) Gaudin model through certain contraction procedures. In the
second part, we derive an explicit integrable Poisson map discretizing a
particular Hamiltonian flow of the rational su(2) Gaudin model. Then, the
contraction procedures enable us to construct explicit integrable
discretizations of the continuous systems derived in the first part of the
paper.Comment: 26 pages, 5 figure
Theory of nuclear induced spectral diffusion: Spin decoherence of phosphorus donors in Si and GaAs quantum dots
We propose a model for spectral diffusion of localized spins in
semiconductors due to the dipolar fluctuations of lattice nuclear spins. Each
nuclear spin flip-flop is assumed to be independent, the rate for this process
being calculated by a method of moments. Our calculated spin decoherence time
ms for donor electron spins in Si:P is a factor of two longer than
spin echo decay measurements. For P nuclear spins we show that spectral
diffusion is well into the motional narrowing regime. The calculation for GaAs
quantum dots gives s depending on the quantum dot size. Our
theory indicates that nuclear induced spectral diffusion should not be a
serious problem in developing spin-based semiconductor quantum computer
architectures.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures. Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
