    Ternary Nitride Semiconductors in the Rocksalt Crystal Structure

    Inorganic nitrides with wurtzite crystal structures are well-known semiconductors used in optoelectronic devices. In contrast, rocksalt-based nitrides are known for their metallic and refractory properties. Breaking this dichotomy, here we report on ternary nitride semiconductors with rocksalt crystal structures, remarkable optoelectronic properties, and the general chemical formula Mgx_{x}TM1x_{1-x}N (TM=Ti, Zr, Hf, Nb). These compounds form over a broad metal composition range and our experiments show that Mg-rich compositions are nondegenerate semiconductors with visible-range optical absorption onsets (1.8-2.1 eV). Lattice parameters are compatible with growth on a variety of substrates, and epitaxially grown MgZrN2_{2} exhibits remarkable electron mobilities approaching 100 cm2^{2}V1^{-1}s1^{-1}. Ab initio calculations reveal that these compounds have disorder-tunable optical properties, large dielectric constants and low carrier effective masses that are insensitive to disorder. Overall, these experimental and theoretical results highlight MgG3_{G-3}TMNG2_{G-2} rocksalts as a new class of semiconductor materials with promising properties for optoelectronic applications

    CAMELS-GB : a large sample, open-source, hydro-meteorological dataset for Great Britain

    Data underpins our knowledge and understanding of the hydrological system; they are used to drive, test and evaluate hydrological models and advance our understanding of hydrological processes and dynamics. With the increasing availability of observational datasets, the integration of information from many catchments for data and modelling analyses is becoming increasingly common. The production of new, open source, datasets for large samples of catchments is vital to advance knowledge on hydrological processes and to ensure hydrological research is reusable and reproducible through the use of common datasets and code. However, the availability of open source, large-sample catchment datasets is notably sparse. In this study, we present CAMELS-GB, the first large sample, open-source, hydro-meteorological catchment dataset for Great Britain (GB). CAMELS-GB integrates a wealth of different datasets derived from national, continental and global products based on observational, satellite and modelled data. The dataset consists of hydro-meteorological timeseries, catchment attributes and catchment boundaries for >800 catchments that cover a wide range of climatic, hydrological, landscape and human management characteristics across GB. Long daily timeseries is provided for a range of hydro-meteorological data (including rainfall, potential-evapotranspiration, temperature, radiation, humidity and flow) from 1970-2015 covering several major hydrological events. A comprehensive set of catchment attributes are provided describing a range of catchment characteristics including topography, climate, hydrology, land cover, soils and (hydro)-geology. Importantly, we also derive human impact attributes (including abstraction returns, percentage urban and gauge distance from reservoir), as well as attributes describing the quality of the flow data (including discharge uncertainty estimates and out of bank flow). The dataset and code used to derive the data will be made open source and provided with comprehensive metadata to allow its use in a wide range of hydro-meteorological data and environmental modelling analyses

    Is late-life dependency increasing or not? A comparison of the Cognitive Function and Ageing Studies (CFAS)

    Background: Little is known about how dependency levels have changed between generational cohorts of older people. We estimated years lived in different care states at age 65 in 1991 and 2011 and new projections of future demand for care. Methods: Two population-based studies of older people in defined geographical areas conducted two decades apart (the Cognitive Function and Ageing Studies) provided prevalence estimates of dependency in four states: high (24-hour care); medium (daily care); low (less than daily); independent. Years in each dependency state were calculated by Sullivan’s method. To project future demand, the proportions in each dependency state (by age group and sex) were applied to the 2014 England population projections. Findings: Between 1991 and 2011 there were significant increases in years lived from age 65 with low (men:1·7 years, 95%CI 1·0-2·4; women:2·4 years, 95%CI 1·8-3·1) and high dependency (men:0·9 years, 95%CI 0·2-1·7; women:1·3 years, 95%CI 0·5-2·1). The majority of men’s extra years of life were independent (36%) or with low dependency (36%) whilst for women the majority were spent with low dependency (58%), only 5% being independent. There were substantial reductions in the proportions with medium and high dependency who lived in care homes, although, if these dependency and care home proportions remain constant in the future, further population ageing will require an extra 71,000 care home places by 2025. Interpretation: On average older men now spend 2.4 years and women 3.0 years with substantial care needs (medium or high dependency), and most will live in the community. These findings have considerable implications for older people’s families who provide the majority of unpaid care, but the findings also supply valuable new information for governments and care providers planning the resources and funding required for the care of their future ageing populations

    Figures of admiration in emerging adulthood: A four country study

    Admiration is a social emotion that is developmentally formative in emerging adulthood; admired adults act as mentors, role models and sources of inspiration to this age group (Arnett, 2014). The present study explored who and what emerging adults admire, across four countries (UK, Iran, China and Russia). 525 participants provided written descriptions of an admired figure. Across all cultures, Care and Generativity was the most common theme. Cross-cultural differences emerged for Limitations and Difficulties (most prevalent in China), Autonomy and Assertiveness (most prevalent in Russia), Intellect and Education (most prevalent in Russia), and Religion and Spirituality (most prevalent in Iran). Males and females in the UK and Russia tended to select admired figures of their own sex, but in Iran and China both male and female participants selected more male figures. The findings suggest a common core to admiration in emerging adulthood, combined with culturally specific features

    A very simple formula is presented that relates the logarithm of the half-life, corrected by the centrifugal barrier, with the Coulomb parameter in proton decay processes. The corresponding experimental data lie on two straight lines which appear as a result of a sudden change in the nuclear shape marking two regions of deformation independently of the angular momentum of the outgoing proton. This feature provides a powerful tool to assign experimentally quantum numbers in proton emitters.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Chronic kidney disease (CKD), which can ultimately progress to kidney failure, is influenced by genetics and the environment. Genes identified in human genome wide association studies (GWAS) explain only a small proportion of the heritable variation and lack functional validation, indicating the need for additional model systems. Outbred heterogeneous stock (HS) rats have been used for genetic fine-mapping of complex traits, but have not previously been used for CKD traits. We performed GWAS for urinary protein excretion (UPE) and CKD related serum biochemistries in 245 male HS rats. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) were identified using a linear mixed effect model that tested for association with imputed genotypes. Candidate genes were identified using bioinformatics tools and targeted RNAseq followed by testing in a novel in vitro model of human tubule, hypoxia-induced damage. We identified two QTL for UPE and five for serum biochemistries. Protein modeling identified a missense variant within Septin 8 (Sept8) as a candidate for UPE. Sept8/SEPTIN8 expression increased in HS rats with elevated UPE and tubulointerstitial injury and in the in vitro hypoxia model. SEPTIN8 is detected within proximal tubule cells in human kidney samples and localizes with acetyl-alpha tubulin in the culture system. After hypoxia, SEPTIN8 staining becomes diffuse and appears to relocalize with actin. These data suggest a role of SEPTIN8 in cellular organization and structure in response to environmental stress. This study demonstrates that integration of a rat genetic model with an environmentally induced tubule damage system identifies Sept8/SEPTIN8 and informs novel aspects of the complex gene by environmental interactions contributing to CKD risk
