    A Lagrangian model for simulating the dispersal of sand-sized particles in coastal waters

    A model, SandTrack, has been established to simulate movements of sand-sized particles in coastal waters within a Lagrangian framework. The model can be applied to assess the dispersal of contaminated particulate material, such as may be associated with industrial discharges, or the dispersal of dredged spoil. For such applications, the Lagrangian approach is essential, as the identity of the particles is important. Although Lagrangian models existed previously which could simulate fine sediment constantly in suspension, there are certain applications, such as dealing with the movement of bed particles, in which intermittent physical processes are critical. SandTrack has been tested against field observations from the coastal waters near Dounreay, United Kingdom. The tests strengthened confidence in the model predictions, and enabled appropriate values of some of the model's main physical parameters to be set. Some features of the particle distributions simulated by SandTrack are consistent with field observations, and are not achievable with simpler sediment transport models. The model's run times are sufficiently short for simulations of particle movement in moderately large coastal areas over several decades to be practical

    Enhanced ion transport using geometrically structured charge selective interfaces

    A microfluidic platform containing charged hydrogels is used to investigate the effect of geometry on charge transport in electrodialysis applications. The influence of heterogeneity on ion transport is determined by electrical characterization and fluorescence microscopy of three different hydrogel geometries. We found that electroosmotic transport of ions towards the hydrogel is enhanced in heterogeneous geometries, as a result of the inhomogeneous electric field in these systems. This yields higher ionic currents for equal applied potentials when compared to homogeneous geometries. The contribution of electroosmotic transport is present in all current regimes, including the Ohmic regime. We also found that the onset of the overlimiting current occurs at lower potentials due to the increased heterogeneity in hydrogel shape, owing to the non-uniform electric field distribution in these systems. Pinning of ion depletion and enrichment zones is observed in the heterogeneous hydrogel systems, due to electroosmotic flows and electrokinetic instabilities. Our platform is highly versatile for the rapid investigation of the effects of membrane topology on general electrodialysis characteristics, including the formation of ion depletion zones on the micro-scale and the onset of the overlimiting current

    Adaptive vertical layering in TELEMAC-3D

    Many processes in environmental hydraulics exhibit sharp spatial gradients of some physical variable(s) in a small localised part of the overall water column. Examples of this include spreading of dense or buoyant plumes and thermal or saline stratification in reservoirs. In this paper, we demonstrate a robust adaptive mesh redistribution (AMR) method coded for TELEMAC-3D. The AMR method aims to capture these sharp gradients without requiring an excessive number of mesh layers or any prior knowledge of the flow structure. Rather than increasing the number of mesh planes in regions of sharp spatial gradients, the idea of mesh redistribution is to maintain a fixed number of planes that move in response to the local solution structure. The movement of the planes is governed by a diffusion equation; an approach that is discussed in Ref. [1]. This approach is similar to that used in the popular GETM software (Ref. [2]). Mesh plane elevations linked to gradients in tracer concentration only are discussed in this paper, although the extension to include velocity shear and/or bathymetry in the equations governing plane placement is expected to be straightforward. We present preliminary results demonstrating that the AMR method can adapt to relatively thin tracer plumes without the increased mesh resolution that would be required with some form of sigma mesh. Comparisons are drawn with an alternative approach in which plane elevations are specified by the user based on some a priori knowledge of the flow structure. The AMR method, which requires neither prior information about the flow nor user input, can be seen to give very similar results for the spreading of dense and buoyant plumes

    Effect of Narrow Spectrum Versus Selective Kinase Inhibitors on the Intestinal Proinflammatory Immune Response in Ulcerative Colitis

    Background: Kinases are key mediators of inflammation, highlighting the potential of kinase inhibitors as treatments for inflammatory disorders. Selective kinase inhibitors, however, have proved disappointing, particularly in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease. Consequently, to improve efficacy, attention has turned to multikinase inhibition. Methods: The activity of a narrow spectrum kinase inhibitor, TOP1210, has been compared with selective kinase inhibitors (BIRB-796, dasatinib and BAY-61-3606) in a range of kinase assays, inflammatory cell assays, and in inflamed biopsies from patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). Effects on recombinant P38α, Src, and Syk kinase activities were assessed using Z-lyte assays (Invitrogen, Paisley, United Kingdom). Anti-inflammatory effects were assessed by measurement of proinflammatory cytokine release from peripheral blood mononuclear cells, primary macrophages, HT29 cells, inflamed colonic UC biopsies, and myofibroblasts isolated from inflamed colonic UC mucosa. Results: TOP1210 potently inhibits P38α, Src, and Syk kinase activities. Similarly, TOP1210 demonstrates potent inhibitory activity against proinflammatory cytokine release in each of the cellular assays and the inflamed colonic UC biopsies and myofibroblasts isolated from inflamed colonic UC mucosa. Generally, the selective kinase inhibitors showed limited and weaker activity in the cellular assays compared with the broad inhibitory profile of TOP1210. However, combination of the selective inhibitors led to improved efficacy and potency in both cellular and UC biopsy assays. Conclusions: Targeted, multikinase inhibition with TOP1210 leads to a broad efficacy profile in both the innate and adaptive immune responses, with significant advantages over existing selective kinase approaches, and potentially offers a much improved therapeutic benefit in inflammatory bowel disease

    Two-body Zâ€ČZ' decays in the minimal 331 model

    The two-body decays of the extra neutral boson Z_2 predicted by the minimal 331 model are analyzed. At the three-level it can decay into standard model particles as well as exotic quarks and the new gauge bosons predicted by the model. The decays into a lepton pair are strongly suppressed, with Br(Z2−−>l+l−) 10−2Br(Z_2 --> l^+l^-) ~ 10^{-2} and Br(Z2−−>ΜˉlÎœ) 10−3Br(Z_2 --> \bar{\nu}_l \nu) ~ 10^{-3}. In the bosonic sector, Z_2 would decay mainly into a pair of bilepton gauge bosons, with a branching ratio below the 0.1 level. The Z_2 boson has thus a leptophobic and bileptophobic nature and it would decay dominantly into quark pairs. The anomaly-induced decays Z2−−>Z1ÎłZ_2 --> Z_1\gamma and Z2−−>Z1Z1Z_2 --> Z_1Z_1, which occurs at the one-loop level are studied. It is found that Br(Z2−−>Z1Îł) 10−9Br(Z_2 --> Z_1\gamma) ~ 10^{-9} and Br(Z2−−>Z1Z1) 10−6Br(Z_2 --> Z_1Z_1) ~ 10^{-6} at most. As for the Z2−−>W+W−Z_2 --> W^+W^- and Z2−−>Z1HZ_2 --> Z_1H decays, with H a relatively light Higgs boson, they are induced via Z'-Z mixing. It is obtained that Br(Z2−−>W+W−) 10−2Br(Z_2 --> W^+W^-) ~ 10^{-2} and Br(Z2−−>Z1H) 10−5Br (Z_2 --> Z_1H) ~ 10^{-5}. We also examine the flavor changing neutral current decays Z2−−>tcZ_2 --> tc and Z2−−>tuZ_2 --> tu, which may have branching fractions as large as 10−310^{-3} and 10−510^{-5}, respectively, and thus may be of phenomenological interest.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Physical Review

    Influence of product placement in children's movies on children's snack choices

    Background Media exposure affects health, including obesity risk. Children's movies often contain food placements—frequently unhealthy foods. However, it is not known if these cues influence children's food choices or consumption after viewing. We explored whether children's snack choices or consumption differs based on: 1) recent exposure to movies with high versus low product placement of unhealthy foods; and 2) children's weight status. Methods Children ages 9–11 were assigned to watch a high (“Alvin and the Chipmunks,” n = 54) or low (“Stuart Little,” n = 60) product-placement movie. After viewing, participants selected a snack choice from each of five categories, several of which were specifically featured in “Alvin.” Uneaten snacks from each participant were weighed upon completion. Snack choice and amount consumed by movie were compared by t-tests, and differences in snack choices by movie were tested with logistic regression. Results Participants consumed an average of 800.8 kcal; mean kcal eaten did not vary by movie watched. Participants who watched the high product-placement movie had 3.1 times the odds (95% CI 1.3–7.2) of choosing cheese balls (most featured snack) compared to participants who watched the low product-placement movie. Children who were overweight or obese consumed a mean of 857 kcal (95% CI: 789–925) compared to 783 kcal (95% CI: 742–823, p = 0.09) for children who were underweight or healthy weight. Children's weight status did not significantly affect their choice of snack. Conclusions Branding and obesogenic messaging in children's movies influenced some choices that children made about snack foods immediately following viewing, especially food with greatest exposure time in the film, but did not affect total calories consumed. Future studies should examine how the accumulation of these messages affects children's long-term food choices

    On the selection of AGN neutrino source candidates for a source stacking analysis with neutrino telescopes

    The sensitivity of a search for sources of TeV neutrinos can be improved by grouping potential sources together into generic classes in a procedure that is known as source stacking. In this paper, we define catalogs of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and use them to perform a source stacking analysis. The grouping of AGN into classes is done in two steps: first, AGN classes are defined, then, sources to be stacked are selected assuming that a potential neutrino flux is linearly correlated with the photon luminosity in a certain energy band (radio, IR, optical, keV, GeV, TeV). Lacking any secure detailed knowledge on neutrino production in AGN, this correlation is motivated by hadronic AGN models, as briefly reviewed in this paper. The source stacking search for neutrinos from generic AGN classes is illustrated using the data collected by the AMANDA-II high energy neutrino detector during the year 2000.     Habermas’ sense of a “cultural Public Sphere” is a notoriously complex term and, when applied to Early Modern cultures, needs careful definition. This essay both introduces the variety of methods by which we might approach playtexts with a view to their public – auditory – impact and contributes to a debate about an audience's understanding of Shakespeare's plays. By selecting two words and their spread of use in one play, Twelfth Night, we might appreciate the potential for meaningful ambiguity latent in how we hear the language of live performance. If we search for how certain terms (in this case, the cluster of semes derived from repetitions of “fancy” and “play”), we might find at times incompatible senses, yet we get near to appreciating the range of Early Modern dramatic language
