    Market-level information and the diffusion of competing technologies:an exploratory analysis of the LAN industry

    Market-level information diffused by print media may contribute to the legitimation of an emerging technology and thus influence the diffusion of competing technological standards. After analyzing more than 10,000 trade media abstracts from the Local Area Networks (LAN) industry published between 1981 and 2000, we found the presence of differential effects on the adoption of competing standards by two market-level information types: technology and product availability. The significance of these effects depends on the technology's order of entry and suggests that high-tech product managers should make strategic use of market-level information by appropriately focusing the content of their communications. © 2007 Elsevier B.V.     A Multiobjective Spatial-based Zone Design Model (MoSZoD)

    This paper presents a multiobjective approach for a spatial-based zone design model to the division of a land surface into two or more pieces. The model employs multiobjective optimization technique and Geographic Information System (GIS) as its components. This paper defines the problem based on multiobjective because it considers relationship among objectives and it is much more realistic to solve a real-world spatial zoning problem. The multiobjective decision analysis has been used to approximate and handle the Pareto-optimal solution to get optimal solution set after this paper applies a heuristic method to generate nondominated alternatives. This paper also aggregates the decision-makers' preferences by allowing interactivity with decision-makers. The flow of the model and its implementation in the GIS environment is presented. The computation has resulted in improvements in spatial zoning

    Burden of mild haemophilia A: Systematic literature review

    Introduction Although the clinical manifestations of severe haemophilia A (HA) are well studied, the challenges, if any, of living with mild HA are not clearly delineated to date. Aim To assess available evidence of clinical risks and societal/economic impacts of disease in adult patients with mild HA using a systematic literature review. Methods Prespecified study selection criteria were applied in a comprehensive literature search. Included studies varied in design and reported outcomes of interest for adults (>= 13 years of age) with mild HA. Results Seventeen studies with a total of 3213 patients met eligibility criteria (published or presented in English, 1966-2017). Most studies were observational, and the outcomes reported were too sparse and dissimilar to support a formal meta-analysis. Mean annual bleeding rates ranged from 0.44 to 4.5 episodes per patient per year. Quality of life (QoL; SF-36 General Health) was impacted compared to healthy controls. Health care costs and productivity were seldom assessed and no robust comparisons to healthy controls were available. Conclusion Quantifying outcomes for adult patients with mild HA remains challenging, with estimates of key QoL and cost data often based on small data sets and without comparison to population norms. Therefore, the clinical impact of mild haemophilia may be under-represented and unmet needs may remain unaddressed. As paradigm-changing therapies for HA emerge, stronger knowledge of mild HA can guide the development of care options that minimize burden and enhance the QoL for this segment of the haemophilia community, and for the haemophilia community in totality

    Global Incidence and mortality of oesophageal cancer and their correlation with socioeconomic indicators temporal patterns and trends in 41 countries

    Oesophageal cancers (adenocarcinomas [AC] and squamous cell carcinomas [SCC]) are characterized by high incidence/mortality in many countries. We aimed to delineate its global incidence and mortality, and studied whether socioeconomic development and its incidence rate were correlated. The age-standardized rates (ASRs) of incidence and mortality of this medical condition in 2012 for 184 nations from the GLOBOCAN database; national databases capturing incidence rates, and the WHO mortality database were examined. Their correlations with two indicators of socioeconomic development were evaluated. Joinpoint regression analysis was used to generate trends. The ratio between the ASR of AC and SCC was strongly correlated with HDI (r = 0.535 [men]; r = 0.661 [women]) and GDP (r = 0.594 [men]; r = 0.550 [women], both p < 0.001). Countries that reported the largest reduction in incidence in male included Poland (Average Annual Percent Change [AAPC] = −7.1, 95%C.I. = −12,−1.9) and Singapore (AAPC = −5.8, 95%C.I. = −9.5,−1.9), whereas for women the greatest decline was seen in Singapore (AAPC = −12.3, 95%C.I. = −17.3,−6.9) and China (AAPC = −5.6, 95%C.I. = −7.6,−3.4). The Philippines (AAPC = 4.3, 95%C.I. = 2,6.6) and Bulgaria (AAPC = 2.8, 95%C.I. = 0.5,5.1) had a significant mortality increase in men; whilst Columbia (AAPC = −6.1, 95%C.I. = −7.5,−4.6) and Slovenia (AAPC = −4.6, 95%C.I. = −7.9,−1.3) reported mortality decline in women.     Survival in equilibrium step fluctuations

    We report the results of analytic and numerical investigations of the time scale of survival or non-zero-crossing probability S(t)S(t) in equilibrium step fluctuations described by Langevin equations appropriate for attachment/detachment and edge-diffusion limited kinetics. An exact relation between long-time behaviors of the survival probability and the autocorrelation function is established and numerically verified. S(t)S(t) is shown to exhibit simple scaling behavior as a function of system size and sampling time. Our theoretical results are in agreement with those obtained from an analysis of experimental dynamical STM data on step fluctuations on Al/Si(111) and Ag(111) surfaces.Comment: RevTeX, 4 pages, 3 figure

    Conceptual design of a novel power-augmented hydrokinetic run-of- river turbine

    Other than the water stream from ocean, river stream is also being considered as a viable source of renewable energy. Many researchers has approached and started the studies of river stream in order to harness the maximum power from the rivers. River stream offers promising energy especially to the rural areas which are surrounded by rivers. From previous studies, it shows that majority of the hydrokinetic run-of-river turbine systems are designed in vertical and horizontal axis. Besides, some of the vertical and horizontal axis turbines are also enclosed by the duct or diffuser in order to guide the river stream and increase the flow velocity. However, the design of the shape of diffuser faced the challenges during fabrication phase and additional supporting structures are needed during installation, causing the increases in the overall cost. In this paper, the authors would like to propose a conceptual design of a novel power-augmented hydrokinetic run-of-river turbine which utilizes the concept of cross-axis wind turbine and simple augmented guide vane. This conceptual design of hydrokinetic turbine able to capture the advantages of both the horizontal and vertical axis turbines. Helical blade design was chosen for this conceptual design due to its ability to capture the skewed flow created by the difference in velocity of upper and lower faces of turbine. When the vertical-axis turbine rotates, the angle of attack of each blade varies cyclically. The cyclical variation of the angle of attack creates cyclical blade loading, which increases the fatigue experienced by blades. Most of the cyclical loading can be alleviated by using helical instead of straight blades. The conceptual design of this cross-axis turbine with helical blade is similar to the Gorlov helical turbine but there are some differences in the radial blades which are designed as 8 degrees upper and lower respectively to the horizontal axis of the connector hub. The two layers radial blade-rotors are offset by 60 degrees. The turbine system is designed by intercepting the two guide vanes in between three individual turbines and also two diffuservanes as the outer part of the system. The NACA 0015 airfoil profile is used as turbine blade in this design. The construction costs of cross-axis concept turbine and the helical blades are relatively low (about 30%) compared with the huge ducted and diffuser turbine. A 3D model was constructed and simulated by using the computational fluid dynamics software, ANSYS-Fluent. In the simulation, the velocity of water flow and the rotational speed of turbine were increased with the integration of the guide-vane and diffuser features. It is estimated that this conceptual design turbine will achieve 60% increase in energy gain

    We introduce a general method, based on a mapping onto quantum mechanics, for investigating the large-T limit of the distribution P(r,T) of the nonlinear functional r[V] = (1/T)\int_0^T dT' V[X(T')], where V(X) is an arbitrary function of the stationary Gaussian Markov process X(T). For T tending to infinity at fixed r we find that P(r,T) behaves as exp[-theta(r) T], where theta(r) is a large deviation function. We present explicit results for a number of special cases, including the case V(X) = X \theta(X) which is related to the cooling and the heating degree days relevant to weather derivatives.Comment: 8 page

    In vitro growth of human keratinocytes and oral cancer cells into microtissues: an aerosol-based microencapsulation technique

In this paper, we proposed a growth of microtissue model for the human keratinocytes (HaCaT) cell line and an oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cell line (ORL-48) based on a simple aerosol microencapsulation technique. At an extrusion rate of 20 μL/min and air flow rate of 0.3 L/min programmed in the aerosol system, HaCaT and ORL-48 cells in alginate microcapsules were encapsulated in microcapsules with a diameter ranging from 200 to 300 μm. Both cell lines were successfully grown into microtissues in the microcapsules of alginate within 16 days of culture. The microtissues were characterized by using a live/dead cell viability assay, field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), fluorescence staining, and cell re-plating experiments. The microtissues of both cell types were viable after being extracted from the alginate membrane using alginate lyase. However, the microtissues of HaCaT and ORL-48 demonstrated differences in both nucleus size and morphology.
