Nutrients in waters on the inner shelf between Cape Charles and Cape Hatteras
The distribution of nutrients in the shelf waters of the southern tip of the Middle Atlantic Bight was investigated. It is concluded that the outflow of freshwater from the Chesapeake Bay is a potential source of nutrients to the adjacent shelf waters. However, a quantitative estimation of its importance cannot yet be made because (1) there are other sources of nutrients to the study area and these sources cannot yet be quantified and (2) the concentrations of nutrients in the outflow from Chesapeake Bay exhibit significant short-term and long-term temporal variabilities
20 cm VLA Radio-Continuum Study of M31 - Images and Point Source Catalogues
We present a series of new high-sensitivity and high-resolution
radio-continuum images of M31 at \lambda=20 cm (\nu=1.4 GHz). These new images
were produced by merging archived 20 cm radio-continuum observations from the
Very Large Array (VLA) telescope. Images presented here are sensitive to rms=60
\mu Jy and feature high angular resolution (<10"). A complete sample of
discrete radio sources have been catalogued and analysed across 17 individual
VLA projects. We identified a total of 864 unique discrete radio sources across
the field of M31. One of the most prominent regions in M31 is the ring feature
for which we estimated total integrated flux of 706 mJy at \lambda=20 cm. We
compare here, detected sources to those listed in Gelfand et al. (2004) at
\lambda=92 cm and find 118 sources in common to both surveys. The majority
(61%) of these sources exhibit a spectral index of \alpha <-0.6 indicating that
their emission is predominantly non-thermal in nature. That is more typical for

Trajectory generation for road vehicle obstacle avoidance using convex optimization
This paper presents a method for trajectory generation using convex optimization to find a feasible, obstacle-free path for a road vehicle. Consideration of vehicle rotation is shown to be necessary if the trajectory is to avoid obstacles specified in a fixed Earth axis system. The paper establishes that, despite the presence of significant non-linearities, it is possible to articulate the obstacle avoidance problem in a tractable convex form using multiple optimization passes. Finally, it is shown by simulation that an optimal trajectory that accounts for the vehicle’s changing velocity throughout the manoeuvre is superior to a previous analytical method that assumes constant speed
Production of Electron Neutrinos at Nuclear Power Reactors and the Prospects for Neutrino Physics
High flux of electron neutrinos(\nue) is produced at nuclear power reactors
through the decays of nuclei activated by neutron capture. Realistic simulation
studies on the neutron transport and capture at the reactor core were
performed. The production of \chr51 and \fe55 give rise to mono-energetic
\nue's at Q-values of 753 keV and 231 keV and fluxes of
and \nue/fission, respectively. Using data from a
germanium detector at the Kuo-Sheng Power Plant, we derived direct limits on
the \nue magnetic moment and the radiative lifetime of \mu_{\nu} < 1.3
\times 10^{-8} ~ \mub and at 90%
confidence level (CL), respectively. Indirect bounds on were also inferred. The \nue-flux can be enhanced by loading
selected isotopes to the reactor core, and the potential applications and
achievable statistical accuracies were examined. These include accurate
cross-section measurements, studies of mixing angle and

A validation of neural co-activation as a measure of attentional focus in a postural task
Postural threat can induce conscious involvement in movement control. This internal focus has been implicated in compromising attentional processing efficiency during postural control, leading to behavioral adaptations that might increase the risk of falling in the elderly. It is suggested that electroencephalography (EEG) coherence, or ‘communication’, between T3 (verbal-analytical) and Fz (motor-planning) regions may provide an objective measure of internal focus in learned movement skills. However, it is currently unknown whether this experimental technique can be applied to the control of gait and posture; skills which develop early in life, without the use of declarative knowledge/explicit verbal cues to guide performance. We validate the utility of the EEG T3-Fz coherence analysis in a postural task. A total of 24 young adults produced small voluntary swaying movements in medial-lateral or anterior-posterior direction under conditions that directed their attentional focus either internally or externally. Although EEG coherence was sensitive to voluntary changes in attentional focus, the lack of observed between-group (High/Low-trait-reinvestment) difference in
coherence may suggest that younger adults cannot be assumed to utilize explicit verbal cues to control voluntary postural sway unless explicitly instructed to do so. As a result, while these results indicate that EEG T3-Fz is a valid technique for assessing attentional focus in postural tasks, our data do not support the clinical application of this method of analysis in providing an objective indication of trait-reinvestment in tasks involving voluntary postural sway.This research was supported by The Royal Society (IE131576) and British Academy (SG132820). Asymptotic corrections to the eigenvalue density of the GUE and LUE
We obtain correction terms to the large N asymptotic expansions of the
eigenvalue density for the Gaussian unitary and Laguerre unitary ensembles of
random N by N matrices, both in the bulk of the spectrum and near the spectral
edge. This is achieved by using the well known orthogonal polynomial expression
for the kernel to construct a double contour integral representation for the
density, to which we apply the saddle point method. The main correction to the
bulk density is oscillatory in N and depends on the distribution function of
the limiting density, while the corrections to the Airy kernel at the soft edge
are again expressed in terms of the Airy function and its first derivative. We
demonstrate numerically that these expansions are very accurate. A matching is
exhibited between the asymptotic expansion of the bulk density, expanded about
the edge, and the asymptotic expansion of the edge density, expanded into the

Searching for New Physics in Leptonic Decays of Bottomonium
New Physics can show up in various well-known processes already studied in
the Standard Model, in particular by modifying decay rates to some extent. In
this work, I examine leptonic decays of vector resonances of
bottomonium below production, subsequent to a magnetic dipole
radiative structural transition of the vector resonance yielding a pseudoscalar
continuum state, searching for the existence of a light Higgs-like neutral
boson that would imply a slight but experimentally measurable breaking of
