The pollinators of Echinacea angustifolia in Saskatchewan

Non-Peer ReviewedEchinacea (Asteraceae) is grown as a nutraceutical crop and is one of the best selling medicinal plants on the North American market today, accounting for over 300 million dollars annually in sales. Echinacea angustifolia accounts for the majority of Echinacea produced in Saskatchewan and is native to the southern regions of the Canadian Prairies. Echinacea must be cross-pollinated to set seed, as is typical of members of the Asteraceae, and only insects can effect cross-pollination. An in-depth knowledge of Echinacea’s pollination system is essential to developing Echinacea as a sustainable market crop. E. angustifolia’s native pollinators are being identified and their pollination efficiencies assessed by pollen-tube quantification after visiting previously unvisited inflorescences. Interestingly, the recent abundance of grasshoppers in Saskatchewan has supported large populations of potential pollinators of E. angustifolia. For instance, the grasshopper bee fly (Systoechus vulgaris) and the golden blister beetle (Epicauta ferruginea) were particularly abundant on E. angustifolia inflorescences in the summer of 2003 and their contributions to pollination are being assessed. Alfalfa leafcutting bees (Megachile rotundata) managed in Saskatchewan as pollinators of alfalfa (Medicago sativum) have the potential to be excellent managed pollinators of Echinacea; this project will evaluate their pollination efficiency

Intellicor: Mobile Design for Monitoring Phonographic Signals

A mobile and web-based prototype was developed to explore utility of heart sound data in the context of patient self-monitoring. There are not many applications available despite measurement equipment that can be purchased. This research aimed at developing an application that could help patients understand and use phonocardiography. The resulting prototype Intellicor enables easy-to-use web and mobile solutions such as registering heart sound, review of previous heart signal recordings, summaries of terms related to patient condition, and medication taken. These functions can be utilized by both patients and physicians to create understanding of heart signals and build communication as a part of treatment. Three development iterations included several expert evaluators who gave positive feedback on the concept of the application. It was appreciated that patients could monitor heart signals and better understand the results. The medical experts would welcome such a system into their work domain if developed correctly and in accordance with the formal expectations, both legal and clinical. The prototype has shown the advantage of gathering data otherwise impossible to obtain. The Intellicor prototype presents the foundation that ought to be further developed in close cooperation of clinical and biomedical experts. Le renforcement musculaire chez les patients hémiplégiques post accident vasculaire cérébral, une méta-analyse

Introduction : La faiblesse musculaire est un des principaux symptômes apparaissant à la suite d’un accident vasculaire cérébral et peut conduire à une réduction de l’activité physique. Une atteinte de la performance de marche peut alors être observée, se traduisant par une asymétrie et une diminution de la vitesse ainsi qu’une augmentation du coût énergétique. Objectif : L’objectif de notre travail de Bachelor est de définir dans quelle mesure le renforcement musculaire chez les patients hémiplégiques chroniques suite à un AVC, améliore la force, la marche et l’équilibre. Méthode : Nous avons effectué nos recherches d’articles sur cinq bases de données, soit Pubmed, Cinhal, Cochrane, Web of science et Embase, et avons trié les études randomisées contrôlées trouvées, avant d’évaluer leurs risques de biais. Les résultats de dix études ont été extraits afin de réaliser une revue systématique de la littérature et une méta-analyse.Hintergrund: Muskelschwäche ist eines der häufigsten Symptome nach Schlaganfall, und kann zu einer Abnahme von körperlicher Aktivität führen. Die Gehfähigkeit kann durch Asymmetrie, verringerte Geschwindigkeit und höhere Energiekosten verschlechtert sein. Ziel: Das Ziel unserer Bachelorarbeit ist es, zu definieren inwiefern Muskelkrafttraining beim chronischen hemiplegischen Patienten nach Schlaganfall hilft, Kraft, Gehen und Gleichgewicht bei funktionellen Aktivitäten zu verbessern. Methode: Die fünf Datenbanken Pubmed, Cinhal, Cochrane, Web of Science und Embase wurden nach Artikeln durchsucht. Daraufhin haben wir die Kontrollierten Randomisierten Studien ausgewählt und deren Risk of Bias bewertet. Die Ergebnisse von zehn Studien wurden extrahiert, um eine systematische Literaturrecherche und Meta-Analyse durchzuführen

Kommunikationstrainings im Vertrieb und Diskursanalyse : Erfahrungsbericht über eine Kooperation

Der folgende Beitrag stellt ein modulares Trainingskonzept für die Aus- und Weiterbildung von Verkäufern vor und berichtet über die Kooperation der beiden Trainer mit einem Sprachwissenschaftler. Im ersten Teil stellt Erhard Flieger, zu diesem Zeitpunkt Leiter von Telecommunications Sales Training’ der Nixdorf Computer AG, die Unternehmensphilosophie und die von ihm in Zusammenarbeit mit Frau Isolde Meinecke und Georg Wist entwickelte Trainingskonzeption vor. Im zweiten Teil charakterisiert Georg Wist, freiberuflicher Trainer, der die Vertriebs- und Kommunikationstrainings - teilweise im Teamteaching mit Erhard Flieger - verantwortlich durchgeführt hat, Ziele, Methoden und Grenzen der Schulung von Kommunikationsfähigkeit in diesen Trainings. Im dritten Teil berichtet Reinhard Fiehler, diskursanalytisch arbeitender Sprachwissenschaftler an der Universität Bielefeld, über erste Ergebnisse seiner Analysen dieser Trainings und die Rückmeldung der Analyseresultate an die Trainingsteilnehmer und die Trainer
