What makes a syntactic change stop? On the decline of periphrastic do in Early Modern English affirmative declarative sentences
In Early Modern English, from about 1500 onwards, the periphrastic do-construction developed
in all types of sentences, including affirmative declarative sentences. However, in the latter this
development came to a halt and the number of such constructions continually declined in the
course of the 17th century. This paper pursues the question of what hidden linguistic factors might
have promoted the change and why it finally failed to succeed. Therefore it examines the use of
periphrastic do in affirmative declarative sentences in the Early Modern English part of the Helsinki
Corpus. In order to identify possible reasons for its decline, the study first discusses the
origin of periphrastic do and then concentrates on the stylistic and functional variation that existed
between the use of the innovative and the conservative construction. It will be shown what particular
morphological, semantic and syntactic functions do could fulfill in such periphrases and
why neither of these uses was conventionalized in the language
Elaboration on the future role sustainable business practices and transparency will play for apparel companies
The world is changingand uncertain. Sustainability-related practicesin business areno longer a niche (Harvard Business School, 2017).The global fashion industry, despite generating over €1.5 trillion turnover annually, hasseenshiftsin criticism for being harmful, anonymous and polluting(Buchel et al., 2018, 7). In response, sustainability initiatives from multiple stakeholders and the sectoritself, are observed increasingly within the market. However, ambiguitystillexistsregardingthe relevance of sustainability, for the competitiveness of the individual industry players. This paper answers that firmsin the fashion industry should prioritize sustainability and integrate the concept intotheir corporate DNA. Transparent operations along the value chain assist thereby
Markers of futurity in Old English and the grammaticalization of shall and will
This paper examines the use of potential source lexemes of future markers in Old English, such as
willan, sculan, beon and weorþan. First their frequency is analysed in a selection of texts from the
OE part of the Helsinki Corpus and compared to the frequency of their cognate forms in Old High
German. This quantitative analysis is followed by an examination of the use of these verbs in their
respective construction types. In this way it will be demonstrated why in Old English willan and
sculan were more suitable candidates for grammaticalisation as auxiliaries to denote future time
than beon and weorþan

Draft Genome Sequences of Facultative Methylotrophs, Gemmobacter sp. Strain LW1 and Mesorhizobium sp. Strain 1M-11, Isolated from Movile Cave, Romania
Facultative methylotrophs belonging to the genera Gemmobacter and Mesorhizobium were isolated from microbial mat and cave water samples obtained from the Movile Cave ecosystem. Both bacteria can utilize methylated amines as their sole carbon and nitrogen source. Here, we report the draft genome sequences of Gemmobacter sp. strain LW1 and Mesorhizobium sp. strain IM1
How should teachers deal with student diversity? About some "programmatic pitfalls" in the current discourse on educational change
(DIPF/Orig./Un)Student diversity confronts teachers with a number of expectations that are not easy to deal with. What is demanded by academic writers often individualizes and idealizes the work of teachers and its complexity. It should be considered how "programmatic pitfalls" can be avoided and which skills are necessary for educational reform concerning diversity. (DIPF/Orig.
METHYLATED AMINE-UTILISING BACTERIA AND MICROBIAL NITROGEN CYCLING IN MOVILE CAVE
Movile Cave is an unusual, isolated ecosystem which harbours a complex population of
microorganisms, fungi and endemic invertebrates. In the absence of light and with no fixed
carbon entering the cave, life is sustained by non-phototrophic microorganisms such as sulfur
and methane oxidisers. Also present are methylotrophs that use one-carbon compounds such
as methanol and methylated amines as their sole source of carbon and energy. Produced
during putrefaction, methylated amines are likely to be major degradation products in Movile
Cave. Further to being methylotrophic substrates, they are also a nitrogen source for many
non-methylotrophic bacteria.
The role of methylated amines as carbon and nitrogen sources for Movile Cave
bacteria was investigated using a combination of DNA stable isotope probing and cultivation
studies. Both, well-characterised and novel methylotrophs were identified: Methylotenera
mobilis dominated 13C-monomethylamine SIP enrichments, while members of
Catellibacterium, Cupriavidus and Altererythrobacter were also active. Cultivation studies
consolidated SIP results in obtaining the first methylotrophic isolates from the genera
Catellibacterium and Mesorhizobium. Pathways for monomethylamine (MMA) metabolism
were investigated using new PCR primers designed to target gmaS, the gene for gammaglutamylmethylamide
synthetase, a key enzyme of the recently characterised indirect MMA
oxidation pathway. This pathway is also present in bacteria that use MMA only as a nitrogen
source, while the well-characterised, direct MMA oxidation pathway involving methylamine
dehydrogenase (mauA) is found only in methylotrophs. gmaS was present in all MMAutilising
isolates, while mauA was found only in some methylotrophs, suggesting the indirect
pathway is the major mode of MMA oxidation both in methylotrophs and non-methylotrophs
from Movile Cave. Preliminary gmaS surveys revealed a high diversity of gmaS-containing
bacteria. The roles of N2 fixers and nitrifiers were also investigated. Both bacterial and
archaeal ammonia oxidisers were found to be active; however, sulfur oxidisers appeared to be
the dominant autotrophs in Movile Cave
We examined in the orthopaedic clinic at the University of Greifswald a retrospective study involving 43 patients (49 feet) with plantar fasciitis to determine if Percutaneous Radiofrequency Ablation would result in subjective reduction of pain in the middle- to longterm outcome. Our participants in this study were given a subjective questionnaire and visual analog scales in order to rate their symptoms before, in the days after nerve ablation and in the moment of the follow-up. The results showed that the mean preintervention visual analog pain score was 8,0±1,839 (with 10 being an excrushiating pain). This dropped postinterventional to 2,0±2,764 , in an average follow-up after 16,33 months. This reduction of pain was statistically significant (p < 0,0001). In comparison to Extracorporeal Shock Wave (ESWT) and Plantar Fascial Release, our findings support the conclusion that Radiofrequency Nerve Ablation should be considered as an alternative intervention in treatment of prolonged heel pain caused by plantar fasciitis
