Effects of Whole Drilling Mud and Selected Components on the Shell Movements of the Bay Scallop, Argopecten irradians
The shell movements of bay scallops (Argopecten irradlans) were electronically monitored before and after different amounts of whole drilling mud, barite, lignosulfonate, and calcium carbonate were added to their tanks. Movements were compared with those made by scallops exposed to seawater for the same duration using six response measures. For whole drilling mud, a graded dose-response relationship existed for two response measures: change In the number of major Rapid Valve Closures (RVCs) and change In the cumulative magnitude of all RVCs. Ejection of pseudofeces Is frequently associated with RVCs. Scallops tested simultaneously with barite, lignosulfonate, and calcium carbonate showed Irregular but similar dose-response relationships for these two response measures. Three other measures (changes In gape width, RVC magnitude, and number of all RVCs) were not reliable Indicators of responsiveness for any materials. None of the materials caused significant changes In the number of swimming attempts, but only one-third of the animals ever attempted to swim. Scallops exposed to seawater showed no significant change for any response measure
Extending the repertoire of microsatellite markers for genetic linkage mapping and germplasm
To increase the number of polymorphic simple sequence repeat markers (SSRs) in chickpea, a genomic library was constructed, and the SSRs derived from this approach are characterized. A genomic DNA library from the chickpea genotype ICC 4958 was constructed after digesting total DNA of ICC 4958 with MBO/Sau and TaqI at University of Frankfurt, Germany. The study increases the existing SSR repertoire in chickpea, which will help to enhance the coverage of linkage maps especially in intraspecific crosses where marker polymorphism is found to be very less
Real clocks and the Zeno effect
Real clocks are not perfect. This must have an effect in our predictions for
the behaviour of a quantum system, an effect for which we present a unified
description encompassing several previous proposals. We study the relevance of
clock errors in the Zeno effect, and find that generically no Zeno effect can
be present (in such a way that there is no contradiction with currently
available experimental data). We further observe that, within the class of
stochasticities in time addressed here, there is no modification in emission

Thread-Scalable Evaluation of Multi-Jet Observables
A leading-order, leading-color parton-level event generator is developed for
use on a multi-threaded GPU. Speed-up factors between 150 and 300 are obtained
compared to an unoptimized CPU-based implementation of the event generator. In
this first paper we study the feasibility of a GPU-based event generator with
an emphasis on the constraints imposed by the hardware. Some studies of Monte
Carlo convergence and accuracy are presented for PP -> 2,...,10 jet observables

Integration of novel SSR and gene-based SNP marker loci in the chickpea genetic map and establishment of new anchor points with Medicago truncatula genome
This study presents the development and mapping of simple sequence repeat (SSR) and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers in chickpea. The mapping population is based on an inter-specific cross between domesticated and non-domesticated genotypes of chickpea (Cicer arietinum ICC 4958 × C. reticulatum PI 489777). This same population has been the focus of previous studies, permitting integration of new and legacy genetic markers into a single genetic map. We report a set of 311 novel SSR markers (designated ICCM—ICRISAT chickpea microsatellite), obtained from an SSR-enriched genomic library of ICC 4958. Screening of these SSR markers on a diverse panel of 48 chickpea accessions provided 147 polymorphic markers with 2–21 alleles and polymorphic information content value 0.04–0.92. Fifty-two of these markers were polymorphic between parental genotypes of the inter-specific population. We also analyzed 233 previously published (H-series) SSR markers that provided another set of 52 polymorphic markers. An additional 71 gene-based SNP markers were developed from transcript sequences that are highly conserved between chickpea and its near relative Medicago truncatula. By using these three approaches, 175 new marker loci along with 407 previously reported marker loci were integrated to yield an improved genetic map of chickpea. The integrated map contains 521 loci organized into eight linkage groups that span 2,602 cM, with an average inter-marker distance of 4.99 cM. Gene-based markers provide anchor points for comparing the genomes of Medicago and chickpea, and reveal extended synteny between these two species. The combined set of genetic markers and their integration into an improved genetic map should facilitate chickpea genetics and breeding, as well as translational studies between chickpea and Medicago
Leveraging the sport participation legacy of the London 2012 Olympics: Senior managers’ perceptions
The purpose of this study was to understand how a sports mega event (SME) was leveraged to try and increase participation, through the investigation of national governing bodies (NGBs) opinions and atti- tudes. Critical realism (CR) was used as a tool to aid understanding of leveraging and legacy conceptualisation, through an empirical investiga- tion. An extensive, mixed method online survey was conducted post London 2012 with senior staff members of NGBs, the main delivery agent chosen to support the participation initiatives associated with the London 2012 Olympics. This research provides valuable findings surrounding the use of CR as a tool to investigate legacy creation, whilst at the same time offering insights to enhance the policy implementation process within the sports development sector. The importance of com- munication, competitive nature of sports system, media, club engage- ment, organisational capacity and monitoring and evaluation were highlighted, which provided useful insights into the multidimensional constructs that can aid future leveraging strategies prior to hosting SMEs
Charged-Particle Multiplicities in Charged-Current Neutrino-- and Anti-Neutrino--Nucleus Interactions
The CHORUS experiment, designed to search for
oscillations, consists of a nuclear emulsion target and electronic detectors.
In this paper, results on the production of charged particles in a small sample
of charged-current neutrino-- and anti-neutrino--nucleus interactions at high
energy are presented. For each event, the emission angle and the ionization
features of the charged particles produced in the interaction are recorded,
while the standard kinematic variables are reconstructed using the electronic
detectors. The average multiplicities for charged tracks, the pseudo-rapidity
distributions, the dispersion in the multiplicity of charged particles and the
KNO scaling are studied in different kinematical regions. A study of
quasi-elastic topologies performed for the first time in nuclear emulsions is
also reported. The results are presented in a form suitable for use in the
validation of Monte Carlo generators of neutrino--nucleus interactions.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figure
Low Q^2 Jet Production at HERA and Virtual Photon Structure
The transition between photoproduction and deep-inelastic scattering is
investigated in jet production at the HERA ep collider, using data collected by
the H1 experiment. Measurements of the differential inclusive jet
cross-sections dsigep/dEt* and dsigmep/deta*, where Et* and eta* are the
transverse energy and the pseudorapidity of the jets in the virtual
photon-proton centre of mass frame, are presented for 0 < Q2 < 49 GeV2 and 0.3
< y < 0.6. The interpretation of the results in terms of the structure of the
virtual photon is discussed. The data are best described by QCD calculations
which include a partonic structure of the virtual photon that evolves with Q2.Comment: 20 pages, 5 Figure
Hadron Production in Diffractive Deep-Inelastic Scattering
Characteristics of hadron production in diffractive deep-inelastic
positron-proton scattering are studied using data collected in 1994 by the H1
experiment at HERA. The following distributions are measured in the
centre-of-mass frame of the photon dissociation system: the hadronic energy
flow, the Feynman-x (x_F) variable for charged particles, the squared
transverse momentum of charged particles (p_T^{*2}), and the mean p_T^{*2} as a
function of x_F. These distributions are compared with results in the gamma^* p
centre-of-mass frame from inclusive deep-inelastic scattering in the
fixed-target experiment EMC, and also with the predictions of several Monte
Carlo calculations. The data are consistent with a picture in which the
partonic structure of the diffractive exchange is dominated at low Q^2 by hard
