    Get PDF
This paper details the roles that shame, guilt, dread and humiliation play in Virginia Woolf\u27s childhood and early adult life. It examines four key instances during these times in her life in which one or more of these feelings are present. Each of these instances also involves certain distinct family members. These experiences of Woolf\u27s discussed in the paper and the family members with which she interacts strengthen her character and contribute to her unique perception and worldview

An Analysis of Simon Legree’s Dreams in Uncle Tom’s Cabin

    Get PDF
This paper discusses Simon Legree\u27s moral degradation in Uncle Tom\u27s Cabin, primarily through his two most prominent dreams in the novel. Freudian analysis of Legree\u27s dreams explains that Legree\u27s past mistreatment of others haunts him to the point where he is driven to the brink of insanity. Legree\u27s suppression of his guilt showcases his inner struggle, as he values his slaveowner reputation to such a degree that he must abandon any shred of humanity

Femme Fatale: Analyzing the Visual Representation of the Radical(ized) Woman in Danish Media

Is there a visual discursive space for the radical(ized) woman or is she invisible? The following paper develops an analytical framework to further the understanding of the interplay between gender and security in radicalization studies. Drawing on visuality research and feminism in security studies, this paper provides a new perspective on the visual representation of female agency. The agency of the violent extremist woman is, for the most part, visually (re)constructed through or with a masculine gaze - as defiance, allure and/or coercion. We argue that the connotations of images are shaped within and by an intervisual and intertextual dynamic that (re)produces understandings of female violence as pathologized, victimized and/or sensationalized and contingent on/in relation to male politics. Using this framework, we analyze the interplay between a textual and visual representation of Hasna Ait Boulahcen labeled ‘The first Europan female suicide bomber’ in Danish media following a violent incident in Paris in 2015. Our analysis illustrates how gendered markers of identity continuously reproduce what is possible in securitized discursive realms insofar that a process of Othering Hasna is gendered. This gendered discursive approach contributes to the understanding of deradicalization by underscoring the role of Silencing and Othering of violent extremist women in shaping and narrowing the discursive realm of political opportunities. The paper thus highlights the role of media representations in limiting the discursive possibilities within and therefore efficacy of deradicalization research, policy and programs

"Does Vinegar Kill Coronavirus?" - Using Search Log Analysis to Estimate the Extent of COVID-19-Related Misinformation Searching Behaviour in the United States

Health experts and government authorities' actions to combat the coronavirus outbreak are strongly compromised by the misinformation infodemic that evolved in parallel to the COVID-19 pandemic. When people get misled by unscientific and unsubstantiated claims regarding the origin or cures for COVID-19, public health response efforts get undermined and people might be less likely to comply with official guidance and thus spread the virus or even harm themselves. To prevent this from happening, a first step is to reveal the prevalence of misinformation ideas in the public. In this study, we use search log analysis to investigate the extent and characteristics of misinformation seeking behaviour in the US using the Bing Search Data-set for Coronavirus Intent. We train a machine learning model to distinguish between regular and misinformation queries and find that only around 1\% of queries are related to misinformation myths or conspiracy theories. The query term \textit{qanon} --- connecting the conspiracy theory to many different origin myths of COVID-19 --- is the most frequent and steadily increasing misinformation-related query in the data-set

Tomato Tomahto: European Perspectives on Information Science

International audience‘And oh, if we ever part, then that might break my heart’ (Gershwin and Gershwin, 1937).In the lyric, ‘tomato tomahto’, the marked, or explicitly differentiated term, is tomahto, corresponding more to the English rather than the United States pronunciation. The marked term of a contrast characteristically designates the exception or minor term and the distinctions contained in the unmarked term may be implicitly, and incompletely, understood. Analogously, information science has often been implicitly based in the United States and influenced by American modes of thought, while European, including English, developments have been the occasionally marked and often minor term. This panel explores European perspectives on information science, explicitly and implicitly contrasting them with United States perspectives, from a base in a number of languages and in Europe and beyond. The panel employs diverse and complementary viewpoints and should make for a lively discussion. It concludes, in sympathy with Gershwin, that cooperation and integration, corresponding to increasing globalization, is the way forward. The combination of European and beyond and United States perspectives on information science is especially appropriate for the first ASIS&T Annual Meeting outside North America

The COVID-19 Snapshot Monitoring in Denmark

The COVID-19 pandemic has required massive behavioural adaptions to curb the spread of the disease. Since March 2020, the COVID-19 Snapshot Monitoring (COSMO) survey has assessed (and continues to do so) Danish citizens’ perceptions and behavioural reactions to the COVID-19 pandemic. Herein, we report selected results of the COSMO survey, highlighting factors related to the Danish response strateg
