Cooling for instantons and the Wrath of Nahm

    Get PDF
The dynamics of instantons and anti-instantons in lattice QCD can be studied by analysing the action and topological charge of configurations as they approach a self-dual or anti-self-dual state, i.e. a state in which S/S_0=|Q|. We use cooling to reveal the semi-classical structure of the configurations we study. Improved actions which eliminate discretization errors up to and including O(a^4) are used to stabilise instantons as we cool for several thousand sweeps. An analogously improved lattice version of the continuum field-strength tensor is used to construct a topological charge free from O(a^4) discretization errors. Values of the action and topological charge obtained with these improved operators approach mutually-consistent integer values to within a few parts in 10^4 after several hundred cooling sweeps. Analysis of configurations with |Q| \approx 1 and |Q| \approx 2 supports the hypothesis that a self-dual |Q|=1 configuration cannot exist on the 4-torus.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, talk presented at the workshop on Lattice Hadron Physics, Cairns Australia, July 200

The Paley graph Pq, where q≡1(mod4) is a prime power, is the graph with vertices the elements of the finite field Fq and an edge between x and y if and only if x-y is a non-zero square in Fq. This paper gives new results on some colouring problems for Paley graphs and related discussion. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

On the spatial Markov property of soups of unoriented and oriented loops

We describe simple properties of some soups of unoriented Markov loops and of some soups of oriented Markov loops that can be interpreted as a spatial Markov property of these loop-soups. This property of the latter soup is related to well-known features of the uniform spanning trees (such as Wilson's algorithm) while the Markov property of the former soup is related to the Gaussian Free Field and to identities used in the foundational papers of Symanzik, Nelson, and of Brydges, Fr\"ohlich and Spencer or Dynkin, or more recently by Le Jan

A renormalisation group approach to two-body scattering in the presence of long-range forces

We apply renormalisation-group methods to two-body scattering by a combination of known long-range and unknown short-range potentials. We impose a cut-off in the basis of distorted waves of the long-range potential and identify possible fixed points of the short-range potential as this cut-off is lowered to zero. The expansions around these fixed points define the power countings for the corresponding effective field theories. Expansions around nontrivial fixed points are shown to correspond to distorted-wave versions of the effective-range expansion. These methods are applied to scattering in the presence of Coulomb, Yukawa and repulsive inverse-square potentials.Comment: 22 pages (RevTeX), 4 figure

A Lattice Study of the Magnetic Moment and the Spin Structure of the Nucleon

    Get PDF
Using an approach free from momentum extrapolation, we calculate the nucleon magnetic moment and the fraction of the nucleon spin carried by the quark angular momentum in the quenched lattice QCD approximation. Quarks with three values of lattice masses, 210, 124 and 80 MeV, are formulated on the lattice using the standard Wilson approach. At every mass, 100 gluon configurations on 16^3 x 32 lattice with \beta=6.0 are used for statistical averaging. The results are compared with the previous calculations with momentum extrapolation. The contribution of the disconnected diagrams is studied at the largest quark mass using noise theory technique.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, Talk given at Lattice2001, Berlin, German

Light Quark Simulations With FLIC Fermions

    Get PDF
Hadron masses are calculated in quenched lattice QCD in order to probe the scaling behavior of a novel fat-link clover fermion action in which only the irrelevant operators of the fermion action are constructed using APE-smeared links. Light quark masses corresponding to an m_pi / m_rho ratio of 0.35 are considered to assess the exceptional configuration problem of clover-fermion actions. This Fat-Link Irrelevant Clover (FLIC) fermion action provides scaling which is superior to mean-field improvement and offers advantages over nonperturbative improvement, including reduced exceptional configurations.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures, Lattice2002(QCD Spectrum and Quark Masses

    Novel fat-link fermion actions

    Get PDF
The hadron mass spectrum is calculated in lattice QCD using a novel fat-link clover fermion action in which only the irrelevant operators of the fermion action are constructed using smeared links. The simulations are performed on a 16^3 X 32 lattice with a lattice spacing of a=0.125 fm. We compare actions with n=4 and 12 smearing sweeps with a smearing fraction of 0.7. The n=4 Fat Link Irrelevant Clover (FLIC) action provides scaling which is superior to mean-field improvement, and offers advantages over nonperturbative O(a) improvement.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, talk given by J.Zanotti at LHP 2001 workshop, Cairns, Australi

On practical problems to compute the ghost propagator in SU(2) lattice gauge theory

In SU(2) lattice pure gauge theory we study numerically the dependence of the ghost propagator G(p) on the choice of Gribov copies in Lorentz (or Landau) gauge. We find that the effect of Gribov copies is essential in the scaling window region, however, it tends to decrease with increasing beta. On the other hand, we find that at larger beta-values very strong fluctuations appear which can make problematic the calculation of the ghost propagator.Comment: 15 pages, 5 postscript figures. 2 Figures added Revised version as to be published in Phys.Rev.

Publisher Copyright: © 2023, The Author(s).Biofilms provide an environment that protects microorganisms from external stresses such as nutrient deprivation, antibiotic treatments, and immune defences, thereby creating favorable conditions for bacterial survival and pathogenesis. Here we show that the RNA-binding protein and ribonuclease polynucleotide phosphorylase (PNPase) is a positive regulator of biofilm formation in the human pathogen Listeria monocytogenes, a major responsible for food contamination in food-processing environments. The PNPase mutant strain produces less biofilm biomass and exhibits an altered biofilm morphology that is more susceptible to antibiotic treatment. Through biochemical assays and microscopical analysis, we demonstrate that PNPase is a previously unrecognized regulator of the composition of the biofilm extracellular matrix, greatly affecting the levels of proteins, extracellular DNA, and sugars. Noteworthy, we have adapted the use of the fluorescent complex ruthenium red-phenanthroline for the detection of polysaccharides in Listeria biofilms. Transcriptomic analysis of wild-type and PNPase mutant biofilms reveals that PNPase impacts many regulatory pathways associated with biofilm formation, particularly by affecting the expression of genes involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates (e.g., lmo0096 and lmo0783, encoding PTS components), of amino acids (e.g., lmo1984 and lmo2006, encoding biosynthetic enzymes) and in the Agr quorum sensing-like system (lmo0048-49). Moreover, we show that PNPase affects mRNA levels of the master regulator of virulence PrfA and PrfA-regulated genes, and these results could help to explain the reduced bacterial internalization in human cells of the ΔpnpA mutant. Overall, this work demonstrates that PNPase is an important post-transcriptional regulator for virulence and adaptation to the biofilm lifestyle of Gram-positive bacteria and highlights the expanding role of ribonucleases as critical players in pathogenicity.publishersversionpublishe

Crossover in the nature of the metallic phases in the perovskite-type RNiO_3

We have measured the photoemission spectra of Nd1x_{1-x}Smx_{x}NiO3_{3}, where the metal-insulator transition and the N\'{e}el ordering occur at the same temperature for x0.4x \lesssim 0.4 and the metal-insulator transition temperature (TMIT_{MI}) is higher than the N\'{e}el temperature for x0.4x \gtrsim 0.4. For x0.4x \le 0.4, the spectral intensity at the Fermi level is high in the metallic phase above TMIT_{MI} and gradually decreases with cooling in the insulating phase below TMIT_{MI} while for x>0.4x > 0.4 it shows a pseudogap-like behavior above TMIT_{MI} and further diminishes below TMIT_{MI}. The results clearly establish that there is a sharp change in the nature of the electronic correlations in the middle (x0.4x \sim 0.4) of the metallic phase of the RRNiO3_3 system.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure, submitted to Phys.
