    Frequency domain parameter identification and the statistical properties of frequency response estimates

    Frequency domain techniques in systems theory have their origins in Heavyside's operational calculus (Heavyside, 1889). Such work was later developed by Foster and Campbell (1931), Brune (1931), Nyquist (1932), Black (1934), Darlington (1939) and subsequently Bode (1948). This interest in the frequency domain was due to its appeal to the intuition of the engineer. The dominance of frequency domain techniques was subsequently eroded from the late 1950s through the 1960s by the influence of the space programmes. The space systems being analysed were based on strong theoretical foundations with well-defined sets of differential equations. The analysis led to the development of the state-space methods which were able to cope with the multivariable problems and were amenable to numerical solution. As a result of these developments, control engineering was largely dominated by the state-space approach and the associated areas of LQG optimal control, Kaiman-Bucy filters, observability and controllability. Two factors led to a resurgence of interest amongst academics in the development of frequency domain techniques in the 1970s and 1980s. The first was the development of the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) (Cooley & Tookey, 1965). This provided an efficient method of analysing the Fourier transforms of signals and allowed the development of spectral methods of obtaining frequency response estimates. The collection of data was greatly speeded up and this enabled frequency domain methods to be increasingly applied to on-line control problems. The second factor was that the developments in the time domain were never fully embraced by practicing engineers in traditional control environments

    Isolation of cDNA clones encoding the human Sm B/B′auto-immune antigen and specifically reacting with human anti-Sm auto-immune sera

    AbstractA cDNA clone for the human SmB and B′ auto-immune antigens has been isolated by antibody screening of a cDNA expression library. The cDNA clone hybridises with two distinct mRNAs, one of which is expressed in a tissue-specific manner. A fusion protein expressed from the cDNA clone was recognised by a number of sera from systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients containing anti-Sm antibodies but not by sera reactive with other auto-immune antigens. The potential use of this clone in a diagnostic assay for SLE and in elucidating the processes regulating the expression of SmB and B′ is discussed

    Fibulin-1 Is Increased in Asthma – A Novel Mediator of Airway Remodeling?

    Background: The extracellular matrix is a dynamic and complex network of macromolecules responsible for maintaining and influencing cellular functions of the airway. The role of fibronectin, an extracellular matrix protein, is well documented in asthma. However, the expression and function of fibulin-1, a secreted glycoprotein which interacts with fibronectin, has not been reported. Fibulin-1 is widely expressed in basement membranes in many organs including the lung. There are four isoforms in humans (A-D) of which fibulin-1C and 1D predominate. The objective of this study was to study the expression of fibulin-1 in volunteers with and without asthma, and to examine its function in vitro. Methodology/Principal Findings: We used immunohistochemistry and dot-blots to examine fibulin-1 levels in bronchial biopsies, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and serum. Real-time PCR for fibulin-1C and 1D, and ELISA and western blotting for fibulin-1 were used to study the levels in airway smooth muscle cells. The function of fibulin-1C was determined by assessing its role, using an antisense oligonucleotide, in cell proliferation, migration and wound healing. A murine model of airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) was used to explore the biological significance of fibulin-1. Levels of fibulin-1 were significantly increased in the serum and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of 21 asthmatics compared with 11 healthy volunteers. In addition fibulin-1 was increased in asthma derived airway smooth muscle cells and fibulin-1C contributed to the enhanced proliferation and wound repair in these cells. These features were reversed when fibulin-1C was suppressed using an antisense oligomer. In a mouse model of AHR, treatment with an AO inhibited the development of AHR to methacholine. Conclusions: Our data collectively suggest fibulin-1C may be worthy of further investigation as a target for airway remodeling in asthma

    The potential of small unmanned aircraft systems and structure-from-motion for topographic surveys: a test of emerging integrated approaches at Cwm Idwal, North Wales

Due to the diverse range of survey configurations available and the infancy of these new methods, further research is required. Here, the accuracy, precision and potential applications of this approach are investigated. A total of 543 images of the Cwm Idwal moraine–mound complex were captured from a light (b5 kg) semi-autonomous multi-rotor unmanned aircraft system using a consumer-grade 18 MP compact digital camera. The imageswere used to produce a DSM(digital surfacemodel) of themoraines. The DSMis in good agreement with 7761 total station survey points providing a total verticalRMSE value of 0.517mand verticalRMSE values as lowas 0.200mfor less densely vegetated areas of the DSM. High-precision topographic data can be acquired rapidly using this technique with the resulting DSMs and orthorectified aerial imagery at sub-decimetre resolutions. Positional errors on the total station dataset, vegetation and steep terrain are identified as the causes of vertical disagreement. Whilst this aerial survey approach is advocated for use in a range of geomorphological settings, care must be taken to ensure that adequate ground control is applied to give a high degree of accuracy

    A straightforward calculation reveals the essentially nonlocal character of the leading heavy QQˉQ\bar{Q} interaction arising from nonperturbative gluon field correlations in the model of a fluctuating QCD vacuum. In light of this quarkonium spin splitting ratio predictions which have supported the scalar confinement ansatz are reconsidered as a specific example of possible consequences for spectroscopy.Comment: Latex, 9 page

    Structure and relaxations in liquid and amorphous Selenium

    We report a molecular dynamics simulation of selenium, described by a three-body interaction. The temperatures T_g and T_c and the structural properties are in agreement with experiment. The mean nearest neighbor coordination number is 2.1. A small pre-peak at about 1 AA^-1 can be explained in terms of void correlations. In the intermediate self-scattering function, i.e. the density fluctuation correlation, classical behavior, alpha- and beta-regimes, is found. We also observe the plateau in the beta-regime below T_g. In a second step, we investigated the heterogeneous and/or homogeneous behavior of the relaxations. At both short and long times the relaxations are homogeneous (or weakly heterogeneous). In the intermediate time scale, lowering the temperature increases the heterogeneity. We connect these different domains to the vibrational (ballistic), beta- and alpha-regimes. We have also shown that the increase in heterogeneity can be understood in terms of relaxations

    One-third of patients fail to return to work 1 year after surgery for colorectal cancer

    Background Achieving full recovery after colorectal cancer surgery means a return to normal physical and psychological health and to a normal social life. Recovery data focusses on time to discharge rather than longer term functionality including return to work (RTW). We aim to assess return to normal holistic function at 1 year after colorectal cancer surgery. Method Questionnaires were created and dispatched to 204 patients who had undergone surgery with curative intent for colorectal cancer, in 2011–2012, in a single teaching hospital. Results Response rate was 75 % (153/204), 82 % (129/157) for open surgery (OS) and 51 % (24/47) for laparoscopic surgery (LS). Median age was 68 (48–91) years for OS and 65 (36–84) for LS. Eighty-four per cent of patients felt ‘ready’ and 95 % had adequate pain control upon discharge (no difference between groups). LS reported earlier ‘return to full fitness’ (1–3 months) than OS (>6 months; Mann–Whitney U, p < 0.05). Recovery from LS was ‘better than expected’ compared to OS ‘worse than expected’ (Mann–Whitney U test, p < 0.05). Forty-nine patients were employed preoperatively and 61 % (n = 30) returned to work. RTW was more frequent after LS (Chi-square test, p < 0.05). Length of time to RTW was significantly less after LS [44 (6–84) days] than OS [71 (14–252) days] (t test, p < 0.05). Levels of self-employment were equal between groups. Conclusions One-third of patients failed to RTW at 1 year post-surgery. Patients having LS returned to full fitness faster, felt recovery was shorter and returned to work earlier than OS. We must invest more in managing expectations and provide better post-discharge support to improve RTW

    Simulating dynamic fire regime and vegetation change in a warming Siberia

    Background Climate change is expected to increase fire activity across the circumboreal zone, including central Siberia. However, few studies have quantitatively assessed potential changes in fire regime characteristics, or considered possible spatial variation in the magnitude of change. Moreover, while simulations indicate that changes in climate are likely to drive major shifts in Siberian vegetation, knowledge of future forest dynamics under the joint influence of changes in climate and fire regimes remains largely theoretical. We used the forest landscape model, LANDIS-II, with PnET-Succession and the BFOLDS fire extension to simulate changes in vegetation and fire regime characteristics under four alternative climate scenarios in three 10,000-km2 study landscapes distributed across a large latitudinal gradient in lowland central Siberia. We evaluated vegetation change using the fire life history strategies adopted by forest tree species: fire resisters, fire avoiders, and fire endurers. Results Annual burned area, the number of fires per year, fire size, and fire intensity all increased under climate change. The relative increase in fire activity was greatest in the northernmost study landscape, leading to a reduction in the difference in fire rotation period between study landscapes. Although the number of fires per year increased progressively with the magnitude of climate change, mean fire size peaked under mild or moderate climate warming in each of our study landscapes, suggesting that fuel limitations and past fire perimeters will feed back to reduce individual fire extent under extreme warming, relative to less extreme warming scenarios. In the Southern and Mid-taiga landscapes, we observed a major shift from fire resister-dominated forests to forests dominated by broadleaved deciduous fire endurers (Betula and Populus genera) under moderate and extreme climate warming scenarios, likely associated with the substantial increase in fire activity. These changes were accompanied by a major decrease in average cohort age and total vegetation biomass across the simulation landscapes. Conclusions Our results imply that climate change will greatly increase fire activity and reduce spatial heterogeneity in fire regime characteristics across central Siberia. Potential ecological consequences include a widespread shift toward forests dominated by broadleaved deciduous species that employ a fire endurer strategy to persist in an increasingly fire-prone environment
