    Unimodular integer circulants associated with trinomials

    The n � n circulant matrix associated with the polynomial [image removed] (with d < n) is the one with first row (a0 ? ad 0 ? 0). The problem as to when such circulants are unimodular arises in the theory of cyclically presented groups and leads to the following question, previously studied by Odoni and Cremona: when is Res(f(t), tn-1) = �1? We give a complete answer to this question for trinomials f(t) = tm � tk � 1. Our main result was conjectured by the author in an earlier paper and (with two exceptions) implies the classification of the finite Cavicchioli?Hegenbarth?Repov? generalized Fibonacci groups, thus giving an almost complete answer to a question of Bardakov and Vesnin

    The aspherical Cavicchioli-Hegenbarth-Repovš generalized Fibonacci groups

    The Cavicchioli–Hegenbarth–Repovš generalized Fibonacci groups are defined by the presentations Gn (m, k) = 〈x 1, … , xn | xixi+m = xi+k (1 ⩽ i ⩽ n)〉. These cyclically presented groups generalize Conway's Fibonacci groups and the Sieradski groups. Building on a theorem of Bardakov and Vesnin we classify the aspherical presentations Gn (m, k). We determine when Gn (m, k) has infinite abelianization and provide sufficient conditions for Gn (m, k) to be perfect. We conjecture that these are also necessary conditions. Combined with our asphericity theorem, a proof of this conjecture would imply a classification of the finite Cavicchioli–Hegenbarth–Repovš groups

    Largeness and SQ-universality of cyclically presented groups

    Largeness, SQ-universality, and the existence of free subgroups of rank 2 are measures of the complexity of a finitely presented group. We obtain conditions under which a cyclically presented group possesses one or more of these properties. We apply our results to a class of groups introduced by Prishchepov which contains, amongst others, the various generalizations of Fibonacci groups introduced by Campbell and Robertson

    Commensal observing with the Allen Telescope array: software command and control

    The Allen Telescope Array (ATA) is a Large-Number-Small-Diameter radio telescope array currently with 42 individual antennas and 5 independent back-end science systems (2 imaging FX correlators and 3 time domain beam formers) located at the Hat Creek Radio Observatory (HCRO). The goal of the ATA is to run multiple back-ends simultaneously, supporting multiple science projects commensally. The primary software control systems are based on a combination of Java, JRuby and Ruby on Rails. The primary control API is simplified to provide easy integration with new back-end systems while the lower layers of the software stack are handled by a master observing system. Scheduling observations for the ATA is based on finding a union between the science needs of multiple projects and automatically determining an efficient path to operating the various sub-components to meet those needs. When completed, the ATA is expected to be a world-class radio telescope, combining dedicated SETI projects with numerous radio astronomy science projects.Comment: SPIE Conference Proceedings, Software and Cyberinfrastructure for Astronomy, Nicole M.     Improvements to the Copernicus Trajectory Design and Optimization System for Complex Space Trajectories

    The purpose of this assessment was to develop updates and new features for the NASA Copernicus Spacecraft Trajectory Design and Optimization analysis tool (version 5.0) for application to NASA programs and projects. These updates will significantly improve the ability to design and optimize complex trajectories over multiple trajectory phases; will allow the use of unique vehicle-specific guidance, control, and trajectory strategies and constraints; and the creation of an almost unlimited number of unique user-defined capabilities. The primary stakeholders for this assessment are the trajectory design and optimization analysts and engineers, and the chief engineers and project managers for existing programs, projects, and/or tasks that involve impulsive, finite burn, and/or continuous thrust trajectories (e.g., Sun, planet, comet, asteroid, halo orbit, Lagrange point, and distant retrograde orbit). The breadth of application spans the preliminary engineering and mission design concepts and optimization, to the development of candidate reference missions and integrated mission design for vehicle system design and operation, to the design and development of flight trajectories and associated propulsive maneuvers for real-time operations

    Differences in normal values for murine white blood cell counts and other hematological parameters based on sampling site

    Objective and design: The effect of blood sampling site on the hemogram and neutrophil adhesion molecules was examined in BALB/c mice.¶ Materials and methods: Blood samples were drawn from the tail, eye, and heart during anesthesia with ketamine and xylazine. Cell numbers were quantified with an automated counter and flow cytometry was used to quantify CD11b and CD18.¶ Results: Total white blood cell (WBC) counts were highest from tail, lower from eye, and significantly lower from heart blood. In general, differences between tail and heart counts reflected changes in all cell types. RBCs, platelets and hematocrits were significantly increased in tail compared to heart blood. Although CD18 levels were not different, CD11b was significantly higher on neutrophils from tail compared to heart blood.¶ Conclusions: In anesthetized BALB/c mice, sampling site readily influences blood counts and neutrophil CD11b.     Comparison of |Q|=1 and |Q|=2 gauge-field configurations on the lattice four-torus

    It is known that exactly self-dual gauge-field configurations with topological charge |Q|=1 cannot exist on the untwisted continuum 4-torus. We explore the manifestation of this remarkable fact on the lattice 4-torus for SU(3) using advanced techniques for controlling lattice discretization errors, extending earlier work of De Forcrand et. al. for SU(2). We identify three distinct signals for the instability of |Q|=1 configurations, and show that these manifest themselves early in the cooling process, long before the would-be instanton has shrunk to a size comparable to the lattice discretization threshold. These signals do not appear for our |Q|=2 configurations. This indicates that these signals reflect the truly global nature of the instability, rather than local discretization effects. Monte-Carlo generated SU(3) gauge field configurations are cooled to the self-dual limit using an O(a^4)-improved gauge action chosen to have small but positive O(a^6) errors. This choice prevents lattice discretization errors from destroying instantons provided their size exceeds the dislocation threshold of the cooling algorithm. Lattice discretization errors are evaluated by comparing the O(a^4)-improved gauge-field action with an O(a^4)-improved action constructed from the square of an O(a^4)-improved lattice field-strength tensor, thus having different O(a^6) discretization errors. The number of action-density peaks, the instanton size and the topological charge of configurations is monitored. We observe a fluctuation in the total topological charge of |Q|=1 configurations, and demonstrate that the onset of this unusual behavior corresponds with the disappearance of multiple-peaks in the action density.     Efficient Finite Groups Arising in the Study of Relative Asphericity

    We study a class of two-generator two-relator groups, denoted Jn(m, k), that arise in the study of relative asphericity as groups satisfying a transitional curvature condition. Particular instances of these groups occur in the literature as finite groups of intriguing orders. Here we find infinite families of non-elementary virtually free groups and of finite metabelian non-nilpotent groups, for which we determine the orders. All Mersenne primes arise as factors of the orders of the non-metacyclic groups in the class, as do all primes from other conjecturally infinite families of primes. We classify the finite groups up to isomorphism and show that our class overlaps and extends a class of groups Fa,b,c with trivalent Cayley graphs that was introduced by C.M.Campbell, H.S.M.Coxeter, and E.F.Robertson. The theory of cyclically presented groups informs our methods and we extend part of this theory (namely, on connections with polynomial resultants) to ?bicyclically presented groups? that arise naturally in our analysis. As a corollary to our main results we obtain new infinite families of finite metacyclic generalized Fibonacci groups
